Yeah, so elite C may not be the right choice of words. We know he's one of the best players but IF he was an elite C he would be C on his current team over some guy named Namestnikov. No? It is possible that he plays wing to Henrik wouldn't you think?
BeefcakeBo
Man some of you guys are crazy. If Stamkos hits free agency I'd be willing to offer him max term and money. We have center depth, but if we land Stamkos we move someone if we need to. Trade Sutter or even Horvat. Much better off having a lot of money tied up in a beast like Stamkos than an bunch of plugs like Burrows, Vrbata and Higgins. Like that 12m of cap I would easily straight up swap for Stamkos and not even think twice about it. Also wherever Stamkos ends up he will be contending. The guy is easily one of the top 10 forwards in the league. Good in both ends and a goal scoring machine that plays center or wing, he immediately takes a team to another level. It certainly is possible but not Horvat. And btw Cooper is a moron and will likely be fired after this season. Again Stamkos is a elite Centre. And Cooper isn't the only one who feels Stamkos is better at RW than C. Tampa mgmt agrees with him. And Stamkos wasn't used as the go to guy on their SC run. He was on the bench at some critical moments of the playoffs. He's a going to be a 70 point guy this year as he was last year. He's not known for his defensive work, he's a 70 point guy now, he doesn't qualify as Elite C. And IMO he's not worth the 10 mill per year he's going to get on a long term deal. Boddy604
Can't help but wonder how long it'll take before Sutter ends up as the 4C. Horvat will overtake him. McCann I can't see being left on the 4th forever, his skill is too high. If Canucks land a guy like Stamkos, that's just gonna speed that even more. Sutter likely ends up with the twins or playing 4th in the long term.

His resume absolutely disagrees with you as does anyone that follows hockey. Stamkos is a natural goal scorer, but defencemen around the league are starting to figure him out. He isn't nearly as dynamic as the players that I've listed and he is not known for being a solid two-way player. Is he worth 7.5 million? Frack yeah. Is he a top 10 player in the NHL? No. PS - Stamkos' own coach doesn't think he belongs in that category of player, Team Canada's builder, Stevie Y, agrees. There is a reason Yzerman chose Cooper over Stamkos. Now, you're fine to disagree with Yzerman, but my argument is not whether Yzerman is right or not, my argument is that your "anyone that follows hockey" comment is the type of comment made by pea-brained individuals. khay
If he signs here, he will get a chance to play with the Sedins on the same line or at least on the same PP unit. He is a RHS with an ability to one time a shot behind no one in this league (maybe only Ovechkin is better), which means, he will get 50 goals every season playing on the same PP as the Sedins. Then after the Sedins retire, he will be supported by Horvat, who will have become our version of Bergeron by then (if not sooner). And then there is money. I'm sure JB will offer at least 10 million dollars, if not more. I thin there is a plenty of reason for him to sign here but then of course, if he has his mind set on returning to Toronto, then we have no chance. Maximum length of the contract that he can sign is 7 years? Which means, he will be 32-33 when the contract ends, just at the end of the prime for most players. Not too bad from the Canucks perspective I think. And signing Stamkos gives the Sedins some well deserved chances at the cup and sends a positive signal to the fans that the team is serious about competing every year. We are short on defence but if we get Stamkos, this allows the Canucks to trade McCann for defensive prospect because we will have Stamkos-Henrik-Sutter-Horvat as our centres. And if we do end up missing the playoffs (which has become even more likely with Henrik's injury), I think we will add a solid defensive prospect. I was watching a bit of hockey central at noon when Friedman was on the show. And they said that Chicago basically has two players at 10M, 6 players making about 5-6 million dollars each, and 12 players around 1 million dollars. And LA will basically be doing something similar if they sign Lucic to 7 million dollars contract (Kopitar at 10, Doughty and Lucic together around 15). They were saying that will be the trend for the next few years. Signing Stamkos will mean that we will be doing something similar. Stamkos at around 10-11, Sedins at 7.5. Then we will have Miller, Edler, Tanev, Burrows, Sutter making about 4-6 million dollars. Then, we have Horvat, Hutton, Baertschi, Biega, McCann, Virtanen, Gaunce, Shinkaruk, Grenier, Pedan, etc etc making ~ 1 million dollars and Dorsett, Sbisa, and Hansen around 3 million dollars. Sure, defence corps of Edler, Tanev, Hutton, Sbisa, and Biega does seem a bit weak and we would need to make it better but I'm not sure if we can do that via UFA. Because what we need is a top defenceman and those don't become available on UFA (Byfuglien is not a top defenceman).

Phil_314
The team would be stupid to not go after him. If the Twins could elevate Radim's production so that he produces 20% more in the same amount of games (0.64 p.p.g. in 80 with Phoenix, then 0.8 p.p.g. in 79 games in his first season here) then who's to say what heights Stammer could reach? Don't forget, the guy is still only 25 and putting up a very solid 0.8 p.p.g. this season, so to say he is in decline would be like saying Sid is declining, simply because of the heights they've reached early in their career. Now the cost would be an important issue as it couldn't be so high that it restricts the team from making other big signings, either of our own guys or of other free agents. For instance, I remember how awhile back Kovalchuk got injured and the Devils were so tight against the cap that they couldn't bring anyone up, and I wouldn't want that to happen. As well, I hope that the team could target R.F.A. Maatta as the Pens are cash-strapped, and in order to bring another offensive D like that into the fold the team can't pay Steven TOO crazy of a sum. But long story short, I hope the team at least tries to get him as he'd turn things around for the team quickly and in a big way.

You didn't know Cooper signed an extension, you just pulled it out of your rear end that he's getting fired at the end of season. Get over it. Why not just admit you don't follow Tampa and aren't educated on what's going on there? And how is a player an Elite C when he doesn't even play C for the past 2 seasons? Can you please explain? BanTSN
I'm not sure if Stamkos coming to Vancouver while they have the Sedins is compatible with the NHL business model, but as a Canucks fan, I would welcome Stamkos with open arms.
