LA LOCHE, Sask. - A government source tells The Canadian Press at least two people have been killed in a mid-day shooting at a remote northern Saskatchewan school.

RCMP did not release any details about what they called a "serious incident."

The source was not authorized to speak on the record and requested anonymity.

Premier Brad Wall issued a statement expressing shock and sorrow at what he called "the horrific events" in La Loche.

He also thanked RCMP and emergency personnel who responded quickly.

The shooting happened at the La Loche Community School's junior and senior high school building, which was put in lockdown.

Mounties asked parents and residents to stay away.

"We are in the preliminary stages of investigation," the RCMP say in a release.

The Ducharme Elementary School a few blocks away was also locked down as a precaution.

"Saskatchewan Education and Social Services will be available to provide all necessary crisis support and counselling services to the school and the community," Wall said.

La Loche is a remote Dene community of about 3,000 people on the eastern shore of Lac La Loche in the northern boreal forest.

What no trigger lock? Gun not locked up?

Sounds like someone dropped the ball keeping that gun safe, like in a gun safe?

The person shooting the gun bears responsibility.  Do we lock our kitchen knives too?  People need to be responsible for their own actions, and stop redirecting blame.

If you own a firearm it's part of your licence that you store your firearm correctly.

Well, I don't know the exact details of this situation, but it seems more like a trouble kid and parents probably being careless with their storage of firearms.

Having rampant amount of firearms wouldn't have changed the results.  Having extremely strict control on weapons wouldn't have changed the aftermath either.  If that kid purchase the gun from some gangbanger, then stricter rules on guns also wouldn't have changed anything.

While some may use this for whatever reasons to promote their agenda for anti-guns... this is probably a case of mental stress, substance abuse, a culture of violence and/or the lack of responsibilities by many.

Yes, but that does - in no way - negate the responsibility of the shooter for their actions.  "The gun was not locked so I shot a couple people."  There comes a point where we have to insist people are responsible for their actions, and stop allowing excuses.

Yup.  Like the parent of the murdered Quebec girl said...a gun didn't kill his girl, a deranged nut did.

If this kid had stolen his parents car or butcher knife, built a bomb or used a baseball bat and used it to kill others, it is still the same thing...murder. Fact is, in Canada a minority of murders actually involve firearms.  Humans are creative when it comes to killing others.

Regardless of the weapon/method used, this is a tragedy and I feel for those involved/affected. What is it that makes our kids targets for all these nutters?
