Happy 55th Birthday Mr. Wayne Gretzky!

How great was the great one?

In 1982-83, Gretzky had 196pts for 1st in the league.  Stastny had 124pts for 2nd in the league that same season.  Gretzky's point totals were 58% higher than the 2nd highest scorer in that same season.

In 1983-84, Gretzky had 205pts for 1st in the league.  Coffey had 126pts for 2nd in the league that same season.  Gretzky's point totals were 63% higher than the 2nd highest scorer in that same season.

Let's take the average and say Gretzky was scoring points at a rate of 60% higher than the next highest scorer.

What does this mean in today's numbers?  Jamie Benn currently has the 2nd highest points total this season at 58pts.  At a rate of 60%, the 1st place scorer would need to have 93pts at the moment!

Extrapolating for a full season, Benn is on pace for 95pts this season.  If Patrick Kane were putting up Gretzky numbers, he would have to finish with 152pts.  Pretty incredible how great Gretzky was.

Happy birthday again to the Great One!

Taking a glance, it looks like Gretzky's greatest season was 1986-87 where:

Gretzky had 183pts for 1st in the league that season.

Kurri had 108pts for 2nd in the league that season.

An incredible 69% spread in points.

Translated to current season:

Benn with 58pts at the moment means Kane would be at 98pts right now!  Absolutely insane.

If Benn finishes with 95pts this season, Kane would need 160pts!

Nope Nope Nope Nope...

You know how many of his records he broke blasting the puck past one of our poor Canuck goaltenders?!

1st goal
500th goal
802nd
50th Hat trick
Worst Canucks loss ever 13-0 vs Oilers in 1985

The Great One was a Canucks terrorist.  He gets no Happy Bday from me.
