It's hard to say if the Moscow boycott had an affect either way and it's fair to say that boycotting Beijing would do no good, however, IMHO, China simply doesn't deserve to host a prestigious event like the Olympics and a boycott would be an embarrassment, especially if multiple countries stayed away.

It's worth noting though, that a sustained boycott from the sporting and entertainment communities certainly did have an impact in South Africa.

Admittedly, this is apples and orangutans, but I think it at least argues in favor of a boycott.

Interesting that the Women's Tennis Federation is the only organization with the gumption to say "We don't care about your money; we care about doing the right thing"

No, I'm saying the Soviets retaliated by boycotting 1984 and it did little to help.  The economic collapse and the Chernobyl disaster are my personal theories as to why the wall fell, but it's certainly up to debate and more complex than some athletes not showing up to the Olympics.

As I have stated, any athlete that participates at these winter Olympics is condoning the human rights abuses that China inflicts upon its own citizens and others.

That will be part of their legacy.

Agreed.

This war hasn't been about military might, until the last 5-10 years anyway.

Now along with economic flexing, the Chinese Government is really starting to push their military buildup.

I'm guessing not many people are aware of the most recent navy "drills" that China put on, that mimic an island invasion force. Hello Taiwan.

And others have forgotten, or don't care about the abuses going on in Hong Kong.

Plus the border "dispute" with India.

The Chinese claim to vast areas of the Arctic, simply because "We are so big we deserve a bunch of it"

Now CSIS is saying that China is messing with Canada by engaging in a miss information campaign.

When things get so bad that Japan has begun to rearm and is looking at changing their constitution, in order to grow their military might even further;  long past time for the world to notice and take action.

AS to how effective Chinese propaganda is, look no further than this web site; where it is now almost standard for people to point out they are talking about the Chinese government and not the Chinese people.

Why? Are the people in the Chinese government, outside foreign contractors or something? Did they hire a bunch of Vietnamese legislators?

Why do we specify it is the government that is an issue? worried about offending our supplier of cheap goods? Concerned that the big bully won't like us?

Time for Canada and Canadians to rise from our slumber, get back into shape as the whole world is changing.

The trade war that China has bullied us with has had a negative impact on our economy.

Right wing bellicose politicians like Peter Dutton don't help with his "beating of war drums" and the like statements.

Women are used to having to fight for their rights.

Always have and probably always will.

Interesting statement made today

Iuf Roe v Wade is overturned citing the right to life.  A precedent may be set for the forcible injection of the vaccine in to people citing the same right to life.

Will be fun to watch.  I personally feel as though US politicians are not nearly as devious as they could/should be.

The moment this is overturned I'd have moved to enforce mandatory vaccinations for the same reasons cited, almost word for word 9inserting vaccine in place of baby or fetus) and the move towards ensuring vasectomies became part of abortion law mandates while also repealing the right to viagra from state and federal health plans.  As well in a final twist the right to request the name of the supposed father in place of those seeking abortions or forced to carry to term and ensuring that the mother has the full right to not only petition but sue said individual and his family for full support for no less than 19 years starting AT the moment of conception (since that's such a fun sticking point)

Honestly, imagine how fast this crap gets censured but once it's been motioned and put out there it can't be taken back

Unless it applies to "Capital Punishment" of course.  GOP selective reasoning.

WTF!

Dang, I used the wrong initials- it is the Women's Tennis Association, not federation.

https://thediplomat.com/2021/12/wta-pulls-its-tournaments-from-china-over-concerns-for-peng-shuai/

The suspension of all WTA tournaments in China because of concerns about the safety of Peng Shuai, a Grand Slam doubles champion who accused a former government official there of sexual assault, could result in cancellations of those events beyond 2022, the head of the women’s professional tennis tour told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

“We’re hopeful we get to the right place, but we are prepared, if it continues as it is — which hasn’t been productive to date — that we will not be operating in the region,” WTA President and CEO Steve Simon said in a video call from California. “This is an organizational effort that is really addressing something that’s about what’s right and wrong.”

Well, they need to change it to the Women's Tennis Federation, RFN!

Oh put a sock in it. Don't blame anyone but western democracies all deciding to not or pull out of the bidding for these games.

It was literally between Beijing already with all the infrastructure built or Almaty that would have to build everything from scratch and be the next Sochi. It was a no brainer move for the IOC at the time given the already ballooning cost of the game especially after the financial disaster that was sochi 2014. Kazakhstan doesn't have a great human rights record either so that was a non factor.

The IOC was literally willing to give the 2022 games to any western nation that wanted it. Heck China bid for these games as a joke and only as a practice run for a future bid after failing like the last 3 or 4 times to even reach the candidate stage.

I will never put any morale judgement on any athlete competing, they trained their whole life for this and might be their only chance to experience the Olympics. They don't have any say on where the games are played.

You make the distinction cause you have chinese Canadians and Americans or permeant residents from China. What you are espousing is a rehash to how badly Canada and the west treated people if Japanese descent during WW2. That is a major human right violation that you sound to be in favor of all over again by not making the distinction.

I'm sorry, I missed the part where I said we should put people into camps for the duration of a war. Can you point it out for me?

You didn't say, just pointing out your rhetoric is dangerous and can lead to that situation happening again.

You don't make the distinction between the people and government you are essentially saying that all ethic chinese are the enemy. Slippery slope to justifying war crimes and human right abuse should WW3 begin.

Than what was your point?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

The chinese people are just as guilty cause they are supporting this regime therefore they are also liable for human right abuse and thus the enemy. That is literally what you are saying by saying there should be no distinction between the government/military and the people.
