John Oliver of "Last Week Tonight" turned his sights on Tucker Carlson in his latest show.

One thing that Oliver mentioned (and that has bugged me for years) is how Carlson portrays himself as a "man of the people".....like somehow, he understands how life is for middle calss Americans, just struggling to get by....

.....when the reality is, he's a silver spoon fed rich kid, who's never had to worry about if the rent was going to be paid, or where his next meal was coming from. Honestly, the fact that his wealth is thanks to a frozen TV Dinner "empire" is just too perfect. Carlson's entire schtick is warmed over tripe, that gets eaten up by lower/middle class white Americans, convinced they are dining in style....

I was impressed by how honest and articulate his remarks were.

And you're right - that vivid memory of him raising the gun and "...from my cold dead hands" probably obscures a more complete picture of the man.

TBH, the "Cold, dead hands" remark sticks with us, but what I can't forget is the fact that he and the rest of the NRA executive decided to go ahead with a pro-gun rally in Denver a week after Columbine...

During the convention, many of the usual suspects were trotted out....one speaker claimed that the problem was guns in the hands of "criminals". (This despite the fact that neither Harris, nor Klebold was a criminal before the shooting) Another speaker tried to deflect, by stating that anti-gun advocates should direct their efforts to stopping teenage pregnancies, (In other words, stop having sex out of wedlock)

Fun (and by "fun", I mean not very fun at all) fact: Eric Harris' parents agreed to speak to police only if granted immunity from prosecution, which isn't surprising when you consider the fact that a search of his room turned up a sawed-off shotgun barrel and bomb making equipment, "clearly visible", according to the Sheriff's department.

Watch out America and world.

Tucker Carlson could be a much more articulate Drumpf. More knowledgeable on how Washington and government works, probably more racist, likely more dangerous.

Carlson is such a POS, this seems like an obvious thing, but honestly, I don't think it's takes into account how abysmally stupid Donald Trump is...

The clown actually believes all the moronic $&!#e he spouts. That's why he can float the idea of adding his face to Mount Rushmore without a trace of irony. He sees the trained seals in their red hats at his rallies and thinks that it's reality.....and his handlers insulate him from the reality that the rest of the planet believe he's a dangerous demagogue, with the IQ of a squirrel.....

Tucker OTOH, knows it's all BS. Sure he's a racist clown, but he's well aware of the fact. He just goes with it, because it makes him a lot of money. I believe if he ever actually made it to the White House, he'd be the garden variety of scumbag Republican president. The same social conservatism, tax cuts and deregulation, but less kowtowing to dictators and trying to install himself as one....

To be sure, Tucker Carlson as president would be far worse than say, Romney, or Pence, but it would still be preferable to a return of Donald Trump to the Oval Office....

Two guys were arrested in connection to assault on officer Sicknick.

Now, not only they are looking at nice lengthy prison sentences but one of the guys will be deported as well.

I think he is Lebanese, so you go from owning your own business in America, to prison and deportation to a place that has been involved in many wars over the last few decades. What a dip$&!#!

Maybe Hezbollah is looking for recruits....

Participating in an attempted coup against the US government and killing a police officer in the process, should kick the resume up to the next pile....

How rich is 'rich', do you think?

How much does a person have to have to be considered rich?  Ten million?   A hundred million?  A billion?

(And, yes, I'm talking about financially rich.  Not spiritually or psychologically rich.)

I can’t answer your question but Biden said somewhere that the “tax the rich” would not affect anybody earning under $400k per year.

I was thinking more along the lines of 'high net worth' individuals.

But, yes, high income is another measurement.

The government could enact a tax policy that would tax high income earners higher rates in the future.  But, if you think that the 'rich' have been taxed too lightly for the past forty years, what do you do?   You can't recoup that lost tax revenue by severely raising and penalizing future high income earners.

I suppose expropriation might be a suggestion - a wealth tax.   The problem is that the wealth of people like Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates is, I would think, in shares of companies and land.  It's not like they're sitting on a vast pile of money, gold and jewels like Scrooge McDuck.  So then we're in a situation where the government is taking control of a percentage of company shares (ie Microsoft or Amazon).  And then what?   Does the government become a shareholder in these companies?  Or does it sell the shares off?

How would we go about redistributing wealth in our society should we decide that's the right thing to do?

I only copied part of this as it was quite long. The White House has rejected an outright wealth tax but their proposal is aimed at the wealthy. Even these changes will be difficult to get through. An entire redistribution of wealth would be a massive undertaking.

Biden Eyes First Major Tax Hike Since 1993 in Next Economic Plan

(Bloomberg) -- President Joe Biden is planning the first major federal tax hike since 1993 to help pay for the long-term economic program designed as a follow-up to his pandemic-relief bill, according to people familiar with the matter.

Unlike the $1.9 trillion Covid-19 stimulus act, the next initiative, which is expected to be even bigger, won’t rely just on government debt as a funding source. While it’s been increasingly clear that tax hikes will be a component -- Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said at least part of the next bill will have to be paid for, and pointed to higher rates -- key advisers are now making preparations for a package of measures that could include an increase in both the corporate tax rate and the individual rate for high earners.

With each tax break and credit having its own lobbying constituency to back it, tinkering with rates is fraught with political risk. That helps explain why the tax hikes in Bill Clinton’s signature 1993 overhaul stand out from the modest modifications done since.

For the Biden administration, the planned changes are an opportunity not just to fund key initiatives like infrastructure, climate and expanded help for poorer Americans, but also to address what Democrats argue are inequities in the tax system itself. The plan will test both Biden’s capacity to woo Republicans and Democrats’ ability to remain unified.

“His whole outlook has always been that Americans believe tax policy needs to be fair, and he has viewed all of his policy options through that lens,” said Sarah Bianchi, head of U.S. public policy at Evercore ISI and a former economic aide to Biden. “That is why the focus is on addressing the unequal treatment between work and wealth.”

While the White House has rejected an outright wealth tax, as proposed by progressive Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, the administration’s current thinking does target the wealthy.

The White House is expected to propose a suite of tax increases, mostly mirroring Biden’s 2020 campaign proposals, according to four people familiar with the discussions.

The tax hikes included in any broader infrastructure and jobs package are likely to include repealing portions of President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax law that benefit corporations and wealthy individuals, as well as making other changes to make the tax code more progressive, said the people familiar with the plan.

The following are among proposals currently planned or under consideration, according to the people, who asked not to be named as the discussions are private:

Raising the corporate tax rate to 28% from 21%Paring back tax preferences for so-called pass-through businesses, such as limited-liability companies or partnershipsRaising the income tax rate on individuals earning more than $400,000Expanding the estate tax’s reachA higher capital-gains tax rate for individuals earning at least $1 million annually. (Biden on the campaign trail proposed applying income-tax rates, which would be higher)

White House economist Heather Boushey underlined that Biden doesn’t intend to boost taxes on people earning less than $400,000 a year. But for “folks at the top who’ve been able to benefit from this economy and haven’t been this hard hit, there’s a lot of room there to think about what kinds of revenue we can raise,” she said in a Bloomberg TV interview Monday.

An independent analysis of the Biden campaign tax plan done by the Tax Policy Center estimated it would raise $2.1 trillion over a decade, though the administration’s plan is likely to be smaller. Bianchi earlier this month wrote that congressional Democrats might agree to $500 billion.

This is it folks! Finally, evidence of massive voter fraud has been released! :frantic:

Nobody does voter fraud like Florida

Spoiler

A mother and daughter in Pensacola, Florida, have been accused of rigging a high school homecoming court election by accessing accounts without authorization, authorities said Monday.

Laura Rose Carroll, 50, was arrested Monday and booked into the Escambia County Jail with a bond of $8,500, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) said in a news release. Her 17-year-old daughter was taken into custody and transferred to the Escambia Regional Juvenile Detention Center, it said.
When reached by CNN, a man identifying himself as Carroll's husband, said, "We have no comment right now. Our lawyers told us not to speak and we will have our day in court."
Escambia County Superintendent Tim Smith confirmed to CNN that Carroll is an employee of Bellview Elementary and has been suspended.
The release says investigators found Carroll, an assistant principal at Bellview Elementary, and her daughter, a student at Tate High used Carroll's district-level access to enter accounts, where hundreds of fraudulent votes were cast for the Taft homecoming court. The votes were flagged as fraudulent when 117 votes allegedly originated from the same IP address within a short period of time. Authorities reported that FDLE agents found evidence of unauthorized access linked to Carroll's cellphone as well as home computers.
Investigators said they found almost 250 fraudulently cast votes for the homecoming court.
