TDL Senario not mentioned (Draft day)

With everything I've heard and read from all different sources about this trade debacle got me thinking, could it be that Dallas (Jim Nill) just plain and simply schooled JB?

Here is what I think may have happened and why.

What Jim Benning said in his interveiw just didn't add up. He said "Dallas and I had the framework for a deal in place, but they choose the Calgary Dman. Then I heard they wanted him all along, everyone saying Dallas was more interested in him over Hamhuis. If this is true, could Jim Nill have set up that trade with JB just to leverage to get the Calgary Dman? Did Jim Nill use Benning as a pawn to get the best deal for the Dman they wanted all along. If so... Jim Benning just got schooled.

Anyhow to me this all adds up, food for thought.

If that's the case, then why did Nill clearly overpay for Russell?

The analysts are saying it was a good deal for Russell, but no one knows what the original ask for him was, they usually start by asking for the moon.

I think the scenario that hasnt been mentioned or has been forgotten about is Stamkos is unsigned atm, TDL is over and many rumours about him wanting to be in a major hockey market along with he could be giving the big FU to Stevie Y for not letting him go to the olympics, fail to negotiate a deal and walk out of TBL for nothing in return.

I think I prefer our situation much more, Hamhuis is coming back, Vrbata wasnt worth much at all, 24pts and a -32.

Sadly until ownership issues are resolved between Dallas & Vancouver we will rarely see trades between them.

In the case with Benning, I hope they never deal with Dallas again.

Nill may have wanted Benning to take salary back or he knew he had no chance in hell of signing Hamhuis after this season. So many things we don't know, so much time for speculation, so much of nothing that Benning can do about it now. Move on my friend....

I'm surprised no one sees it.

Calgary used JB as leverage in order to maximize the return from Dallas. The asking price for Hamhuis was in the same ballpark as what Calgary got for Russell. But since Vancouver couldn't (wouldn't) pull the trigger on the deal, Dallas was left with the only option; Russell. Thus forcing Nill's hand to overpay for Russell; who was the only top 4 defenseman left on the trade market.

Calgary and Vancouver were in communication during the negotiations regarding Russell and Hamhuis prior to the TDL. Calgary knew we weren't trading Hamhuis, but Dallas didn't.
