Sean Day: Is he the BIG D we need?

Recommended Posts

Everyone who pays attention knows the Canucks need some size on their back end.

A monster D Man is very often the a key ingredient in the recipe for a Cup winning team.

Seabrook, the most underrated back stopper in the league has been a crucial ingredient in Chicago's runs.

The problem is, a lot of big guys aren't mobile, and can't handle the puck.

Enter Sean Day... earlier this season rated 30th in prospects for Sportsnet.

6' 3" 229 lbs.

He comes with a lot of questions, very much a work in progress... but the intriguing fact is, he has great wheels, handles the puck well and is physical.  But he does make mistakes.

Now obviously the Canucks are going to draft a lot higher than his last rating at #30, in fact, if we ended in our current #8 slot, we might just take Kyle Clague, who is a classic offensive D man, great puck moving and QB, but not the biggest guy at 6' 1" and 184 lbs.

But it might be worthwhile for Benning to look hard at Day, maybe find a way to get another late first rounder and pick him up.

Could be that big physical presence this team needs.

His stock has fallen so much.

A few years ago he was pegged as guaranteed top 5 pick. Now he may not even be taken in the 1st round.

Exactly.

He is late 1st or early 2nd rounder... but it may be worth it for Benning to try to pick up another late 1st rounder to acquire him... AFTER we make our initial 1st round pick... which could be Clague or whoever depending on our position.

Anyone who has wheels like he does, and size like he does, has to be given some consideration for a late 1st or early 2nd.

The question is, do we have a BIG enough D to satisfy our fan base?

You have to think that guys like Edler and Tanev have big D, as they're taller. Some smaller guys have big Ds too. Most women would tell you that size of the D doesn't matter... they're lying. Teams with bigger D tend to penetrate further in the playoffs.

You want to pick up the players who rise, not the ones who fall.

The Canucks have had their own somewhat recent failure in this regard with Yann Sauve.

If he gets a late 1st, it better be Luke Green, Adam Mascherin, or Niemalainen.

Like Kylington, McKeown, Andersson in recent years his stock has fallen during the year.  I wouldn't be surprise if he's only picked late in the 2nd round.

If we have Columbus' 2nd rounder this year, I think it worth taking a risk on him with 2 x 2nd rounder.  If we don't, then I guess it depend whos left, I'd rather Benning picks someone he likes, rather than taking a risk on Day (maybe it will be Day too...who knows).

The fact he's a lefty, also makes him less attractive to me (just a little bit)

But definitely an intriguing prospect.

I can only hope that we target the defensive side of the Canucks. A strong D will give the offensive side more opportunity to score and keep goals out of our net.

It is time to make our D better

This.

Angelo Esposito: Projected lottery pick. Ended up dropping to 20th overall. Playing in Europe.

Jordan Schroeder: Blerg.

Nick Ebert: He was expected to go in the top 10 the year going into the draft. Dropped to the 7th round, last pick in the draft to the Kings. Toiling on their minor league team.

Those were just off the top of my head, but there are other examples. While Day looked good a year ago, you don't take him now. One source has him projected to go late in the second round, as of a month ago. I can honestly see him dropping to the 3rd. There are far better options available.

And when the Canucks draft in the top 10 (and if not the top 3), they NEED to draft a defenseman. Luc Bourdon was the last defenseman they drafted in the first round, 11 years ago. And Yann Sauve was the last they drafted in the second round.

Pretty much concur with what has been said about avoiding guys that looked phenomenal as a 15 year old, that has steadily fallen as they've advanced in age. Not sure what happens to those players, maybe they just matured early, injuries took their toll or confidence has just been shot, but I wouldn't waste a late 1st, 2nd on those types...maybe a 3rd.

Great example is someone the Canucks took a few years ago, Steven Anthony, as a 14/15 year old, was highly regarded and was thought to be a sure fire top 10 pick if he continued to develop as he did...well he was taken in the seventh round by us and hasn't played a single NHL game to this date.

Is pretty shocking how far Day's stock has crashed though seeing as he was granted exceptional status by Hockey Canada, only other players to receive that were Taveras, Ekblad and McDavid, also someone named Joseph Veleno in 2015.
