1 Year Evaluation - Baertschi for a 2nd Round Pick

It's been 1 year since that trade has gone down.  Would you rather have Baertschi or our 2nd rounder who'd most likely still be playing junior whoever that may be?

Sven is my favorite player to watch right now with all due respect yo the twins.  Fast skater, great on his edges, good vision, excellent release, plays physical enough for his size, creates, soft hands, crafty and hounds the puck.  To my surprise he's drastically improved defensively also.

I was excited about the trade when it happened because of Greene in Utica spoke highly about him going backvto Portland.  Benning also loved him in junior.

Now I love the trade.

Side note....

In my opinion Benning won the Kesler deal.  Sbisa a solid #4 or #5 dman with a physical edge.  Sutter is very solid (when healthy) and I trust McCann will be a great pro in due time.

I believe Benning was right about letting Lack go for a 3rd.  Markstrom looks great.

I think Benning won Granlund deal over Hunter.  Of course it's too early to tell but Sven is our little LW in yhe top 6, can't have too many.  Hunter is only an NHLer if he's a top 6.  Although many ppl disagree, I'm in the I don't think he'll make it camp.  I hope he does though.  Good kid.  I like Granlunds upside, comes as advertised.

Linden Vey for a 2nd?  Although he's the Canucks whipping boy, I think it was a fair risk/reward try.  Personally I like Vey.  He needs to add some strength and a bit more confidence but he's certainly worth a 2nd round pick.

Although not earth shattering, Etem for Jensen is a win.

Larsen for a 5th?  Sounds like he's already on our roster next year so that's a win.  And on our PP to boot.

I know that Sutter wasn't involved in the Kesler deal but Bonino and Clendening go out for Sutter and we use the pick for McCann so ultimately our return was Sbisa, Sutter and McCann for Kesler, Bonino and Clendening.  Yes please, as a Canuck fan who must trade Kesler to only 1 team and this is our return.....win for Benning.

Anyway, are you happy about Sven for a 2nd rounder after 1 year of evaluating?

Liked the trade then, love it now. Baertschi's becoming one of my favourite players.Bad start, but he really worked on his defensive game, and then the offense came with it. Holy man, it's really looking like we fleeced Calgary.

Don't forget Dorsett on the Kesler return, we gave Anaheim a 3rd in 2015 for a 3rd in 2014, then traded that 2014 3rd to NYR for Dorsy. Clendening isn't even part of that trade comparison, traded to Pittsburgh with Bonino, then traded to Anaheim, then waived.... We never should have traded Forsling for him to start with though.

I liked the Baertschi trade when it happened. Slow start but he's now showing flashes of why he was picked in the top half of the first round. He's going to be a very good player, him and Bo work together well and I hope to see this continue for some time.

Liked it then, like it now. All the scouting pointed to this guy having the chops. I'm guessing he'll pot 20 next year, 30 would be nice. Etem was a nice move. I have no issue with Vey. Not sold on Grandlund /Shinkaruk. jury is out.

No, that point is irrelevent.  Pitt wanted Clendening and it helped close the Sutter deal.  That was a win and Clendening was a JB converted 5th round pick in the first place, that helped make that deal happen.   Sutter for Bonino, 5th and a pick swap in the 60s range - that is a deal you have to do all over again every time.

I understand that but you could've thrown in anybody else or another draft pick to close the deal, couldve throw in Corrado for example, they were scouting him in Utica beforehand anyway. Letting Forsling slip to Chicago was bad IMO, he's a slick PP D man and showed that at the WJC,  and now our D pool is in need more then ever.

The deal went back and forth for a bit, but now we won hands down.

When the trade happened, I thought we won it.  Then Baer started playing for us.

It looked bad for us, then he found his game.   A little while later him and Bo found their chemistry.

Now it is a steal.  He has a great style, and his d game has been stepped up big time.

Nope on three or four counts.

Some of yall need to slow down for a minute its still quite early to be declaring "winners" or a "steal" here. I know ppl are clamouring for someone on this team to step up and show some scoring prowless but take a deep breathe, lets see if he can improve over the summer and show some more consistency next year. The jury is still out as far as im concerned.

Rasmus Andersson says hello.

I think Baertschi has taken big strides this season, and he could still end up being a steal in this deal. He does need to get stronger so he does not become a Mason Raymond. There is a lot of time to go and see how this trade shakes out, and I hope the Canucks get lucky long term.

I was iffy on the trade at the time, though I wasn't heavily opposed or in favour. Now, it's looking like we will win it, but it depends on how Baertschi continues to develop. If he can become a fully consistent top 6 player, then we've clearly won the trade, but if he falters later on, then that may not be the case.
