Henrik Sedin has been an excellent center for us for the past 10+ years, and while he looks like he can play at a high level for at least a couple more years, the day will eventually come when sadly he will hang up his skates. And when that day finally comes, someone within our organization will have to step up and take over the duties of the 1C.

The question is: who will it be?

Will it be Horvat, who seems to keep on improving? Will it be McCann, who will likely find his offensive stride after a couple of years of seasoning? Sutter is also a possible candidate, mabye even Vey or Granlund if things work out. Stamkos is yet another possibility, as ownership would likely make every effort to bring a big name here to keep fan interest high as we likely enter a couple of lean years before we can contend again.

So CDC, I'm asking you if you think any of the above players mentioned are viable candidates for future 1C, or if we have to obtain that player with a future draft pick/trade. Cheers!

I don't think our future C is on this team yet. Horvat is OK but I can't see his potential as above Kesler's which is good as he has had 2 70 pt seasons in his career.  I hope I'm wrong but I don't think that is captain material. McCann from what I have seen is a B level prospect. He has good offensive instincts and a shot of a sniper but he is fairly invisible when the puck is not on his stick. His play away from the puch definately needs more work along with his strength. After watching captains like Linden, Naslund, Sedin, even Luongo who were all some of the best in the game, I want to see an elite player captain the team. If Hamhuis is resigned, I wouldn't hate it if they gave it to him to hold on to until that player is ready.

That is both fun and kind of depressing to think about.

IMO, we don't have anyone who could be a legit 1st line centre coming up.

I think we will need to draft one in the next couple years.(we will suck for a while, could get some pretty good picks).

I think Bo will be a great number 2.

Kinda feel the same thing about Mac, but obviously a different style.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Jared traded one day for a defensive equivalent.

There is always uncertainty about how players will develop but, given current trajectories and player attributes it is hard to see a legitimate 1C currently on the team. A legitimate 1C -- not a star, just a solid 1C, should be scoring at a rate of .75 PPG or better (preferably better), should have a positive plus/minus, and should have clear high-end skills that force the other team to put out their top D pair against hi,.

Sutter is a good player but he is in his peak years already and he is obviously not a 1C. He is not really a 2C. He is a guy you like at 3C, where he can be very good.

Horvat is a good young player, but there is a tendency on the CDC to over-rate him. If you look at his trajectory from junior to the present and at his style of play he is not on track to be a legitimate 1C. With better defensive wingers than he had most of this year and with better luck and more development his plus/minus should improve next year. But I see being a good 2C as his ceiling.

McCann is a high skill guy, but he still needs to find his niche in the NHL. He started strong this year but he has faded -- struggling in the face-off circle, getting pushed off the puck, etc. After tonight, his PPG has fallen behind Jake's and is a long way behind Vey's. He is only 19 and might develop into a 1C, but that is a huge longshot. I think that as he gets stronger and adds weight his more natural spot is as a shutdown 3C who can provide secondary scoring, has good speed, and plays with a bit of an edge.

Vey does not get as much respect as he deserves, but obviously he is not a 1C. An no-one currently in Utica is even a legitimate 1C at the AHL level.

Granlund has played pretty well since joining the Canucks. But he looks like a bottom 6 foward. No way is he on a 1C trajectory.

A future 1C is one of the big holes the Canucks will need to fill if they are going to be Cup contenders again. The other is a legitimate #1 D, although I would not rule out Hutton as someone who might grow into that role.

I think we really need to try to groom McCann a bit more to become that overall top center. He's got the offensive talent and hockey IQ to be a star center, and he plays great defence. I see McCann as a potential Krejci type player and Horvat as a Kesler/Bergeron type. That's a good enough tandem down the middle.

If we're lucky Horvat will start putting up some serious numbers and almost become a Toews-type of player but we'd be pretty good with no true elite 90 point center and just a couple of decent two-way centermen.

Not ideal but it can work and has in the past. Of course Boston won a Cup with defensive centers and Chicago have a dynasty with Toews at center but there are so many other pieces we need.

If we're going with two defensive centers, we need that elite scoring talent and high playmaking hockey IQ from elsewhere in the lineup.

Yeah, I guess it is kinda funny throwing those names out as possible future top line centers. But the thing is we're kind of short on offensive centers in our system, and that was kind of the point of this thread. Even though they're definite longshots to ever be 1st line centers, I put those names out because well, who else is there right now?

I tried to do the poll but it wouldn't work for some reason, so I just left it as is.

That's weird. You can edit your topic and it should be there as well. There should be a tab titled "Poll" to the right of another tab called "Content"; which is where you have written your topic.
