1) Hamhuis...duh.

2) Hamhuis is worth over 5 million on the open market, may take a discount to stay here at his current 4.5 - not Sbisa money.

3) If the question becomes Sbisa at 3.6 or Hammer at 4.5-5.0, see point #1.

Sbisa is under rated around here. He is our only Dman that actually lays the body. He has drastically improved since coming here. All that being said - Hammer all day every day. Hamhuis is, plain and simple, just a better hockey player. I like Sbisa but there really is no question about it. It is looking like the Canucks are going to have to trade one of them next year. They can't let Hammer walk after the TDL debacle.

Obviously Hamhuis is a better defenseman than Sbisa (if you consider all facets of their games).  As far as the Canucks needs go, I think you need both.  Hamhuis will be a much better leader to the young guys, since he's played at the highest level in a national tournament, and been to the Stanley Cup finals.  Sbisa on the other hand is one of our only physical defensemen,  We need more like that if we plan on getting any better,

Hamhuis..

That was a pretty easy question.

When it comes to Sbisa.....

If you don't get points I expect you to be a excellent defensive defenseman. He does neither.

Obviously Hamhuis is currently the better D today, but he’s also 33 years old and is coming off of consecutive years with back to back long term injuries.  His play on top of that has only decreased each year where Sbisa hasn’t even entered the prime years of a NHL defensemen and is at least heading upwards (although the benchmark wasn’t that high).

There is a 7 year difference in age between the players.  If both players play till 36 that means you have Hamhuis for another 3 years on a young team in the process of transitioning, already loaded with players and prospects that play the left side vs Sbisa for another 10, who can play the right side?

The question shouldn’t be do you want Sbisa or Hamhuis…it should be, does it make sense to sign Hamhuis to occupy a roster spot from Pedan and Tryamkin.  We already have a top 4 of Edler and Hutton on the left side, that would mean the bottom pairing left side D would come down to those three.  And with the current position the team is heading, I’d have to say goodbye Hamhuis.

Although I dont see Hammer getting 5+ on the open market as one poster suggested, just due to him not aging as gracefully as other Dmen, his injurie troubles of the last few seasons have really sped up the aging process for him and slowed down his play considerably.  Althought 2011 was only 5 years ago, his play of that era seems a decade ago in quality.  Because free agents do command a tad higher then their worth, I can see someone throwing 4, maybe 4.5 plus 3-4 years term at him, Maybe and Edmonton or Carolina team, who needs someone to mentor their younger up and coming D, or else maybe he does take the hometown discount and signs for 3-3.5 in Vancouver for 3 years and then fades into retirement, but as Forseberg mentioned, he's aging and Vancouver is probably hungry to see what someone of the cupboard prospects have to offer.

As for Sbisa vs Hamhuis, at this point in both of their careers its tough, I don't see Sbisa as having very high sealing, but he can certainly be at least a steady dman who can play game in game out, I don't see him in the top 4 if the top 4 improves drastically over the next few seasons, but if the top 4 disintegrates then he could certainly serve time there while solutions are found. Either way, if I had to chose one over the other, at this point it'd be a coin flip.

if we are likely to have pedan and tryamkin on the roster next year, they could bring a similar game as sbisa at a quarter of the price.

Edler or Sbisa could be on the move, if we decide to sign hamhuis and maybe target a rhd in the trade...

I would have to agree. You want teams to dread coming into your building not just have another night at the office. The best way to have them dread coming in is the relentless physical game. Make them keep their heads up and watch their backs.

  • 2 weeks later...

Neither. 5m x 3 years would be Hammer Taking a home team discount. I love the guy but what we really need is a vet to play on Huttons right. IMO we should go after Demers or try to unload one of our buy out candidates for one of another teams something like Higgins for Wideman + . I doubt we get Yandle or  Barrie and I'm not convinced that either is quite what we need anyhow.
