Draft Day Trade Scenario Within the Pacific

If all things go as planned this draft, which they probably won't, either Calgary or Edmonton should end up with a top 3 pick.  Calgary needs goaltending desperately, Edmonton to a smaller extent, and Edmonton needs an upgrade on D.

Are either of these two trade scenarios realistic?

Scenario 1
To Calgary

Jacob Markstrom

To Vancouver

Calgary's 2nd/3rd overall

Scenario 2
To Edmonton
Alex Edler
Vancouver's 3rd

To Vancouver
Edmonton's 2nd/3rd overall

Should we really get lucky and land a top 3 ourselves, and follow through with either above trade that could land us 2 top 3 picks.  Imagine having both Laine and Puljujarvi or a combination of Matthews and one of the Finns.  I'm dreaming a bit but are either of these 2 trade scenarios realistic?  What would have to be added to make them more realistic? Vancouver's 2nd?  Could we survive with Miller (assuming we could re-sign him, until Demko is ready)?

We can't just have one proven goalie. Demko is still a couple of years away. The team plays worse in front of Miller, and Markstrom has a better record.

I could see Edler + pick fetching us a 10-20th pick, but not a top 5 pick.

Markstrom is probably worth a late first or early second - at best. The guy has had limited success at the NHL level and is only starting to bloom now (relatively late).

Edler is likely worth a mid to late first rounder.

You gotta remember that this isn't the trade deadline where values are high. You're discussing draft picks AT THE DRAFT. Draft picks come at a premium on draft day because you actually end up with a player in your system at the end of the day. Its very unrealistic to think that any team picking in the top 5 is going to give up their pick unless there is a huge overpayment. Vancouver would have to give up Edler and our 1st (in the 5th-8th range) to move up to the 2nd/3rd overall. That's simply how it works on draft day when prices are through the roof.

Calgary wouldn't trade the 2nd overall for Carey Price, never mind Jacob Markstrom.

I wouldn't trade Markstrom for anything. He's our number 1 starting next year until Demko is ready.

Markstrom isn't Carey Price. Saying you would not trade him for anything in a thread proposing him being traded for the 3rd overall tells me you grossly overvalue his presence on this roster.

I agree fully but to commit to a rebuild and get Demko ready you would be further ahead to shop Miller as you might get a better return. As far as Edler I agree he should go but he will not waive so it is moot.

Marks from isn't Price, but when Miller is gone, Markstrom will have to take his place until Demko is ready.

I really want Laine, and would be willing to give up quite a bit to get him:

To CGY/EDM/TOR/CBJ:

1st 2016 (6th overall)

McCann

2nd 2016

1st 2017

Brisebois

To VAN:

2nd Overall Pick (Laine)

We loose a pretty good prospect in McCann, but it would be worth it for someone like Laine. It won't be impossible to find a #2 centre down the line, and we clear up our short term centre depth. Next year our lineup would look a lot more balanced:

Sedin - Sedin - Sutter

Baertschi - Horvat - Laine

Virtanen - Granlund - Hansen

Dorsett - Vey - Etem

Burrows

Down the line, we still have a very good forward core:

Laine - Horvat - Virtanen

Baertschi - ******* - Boeser

Gaunce - Granlund - Etem

******* - Cassels - *******

Markstrom is well on his way to becoming the number one here. No more giving excellent goalies away. This isn't Jim's Bargain Goalie Emporium.

Lol. The ops proposal is for the 2nd/3rd overall pick and you call that giving him away?

Wow... To be clear there isn't a chance in hell Calgary would accept that.
