[Discussion] Let's Get To The Offseason...

Recommended Posts

Let's take a look at the upcoming moves and offeason for the team.

They will have at least 10 million (maybe more?) in cap space

They have 2-3 college FA's of interest (signed Stetcher and Garteig)

There's a couple RFA's of interest (chances of landing one are slim; most teams match almost 100%)

They'll be picking anywhere between 4-11th (lower the better but they are not catching EDM/CAL/TOR)

UPDATED end of May

KHL

Karki - big body for bottom 6

Golyshev - touted as the next Panarin (lite)?; very small but stubby forward

College UFA

Mark Jankowski - it's a Weisbrod pick and he hasn't signed with the Flames yet; if he becomes a UFA, watch for them to sign (Jankowski + Granlund for Shinkaruk doesn't sound so bad)

Casey Nelson - a young D prospect who can play in Utica (boosting the prospect pool)

Troy Stetcher - *SIGNED!!*

Brandon Tanev - brothers connection; could be a late bloomer much like his bro (3rd line checker/PK) - *Winnipeg Jet

Drake Caggiula - smallish size forward but worth a gamble if he plays hard on the puck and pots some goals- *Edmonton Oiler

DRAFT

Chychrun - he may fall a couple spots due to shoulder surgery/apparent errant plays with the puck

Bean - if this team is consistent, picking someone off the board (or higher than they should) look for Bean if they hit 6-10th spot

Sergachev - if Chychrun is gone, look for them to grab Sergachev

Dubois/Tkachuk/Juolevi - *Canucks pick 5th and these 3 are the targeted trio

NHL UFA

Hamhuis - it'll have to be for another short term home town discount (and to make up for a bad trade deadline for JB) -*still in discussions

Harrison - played well with Carolina (and we all know they like ex Hurricanes); good for bottom D pairing

Goligoski - replacement for Hamhuis if he doesn't sign

Stamkos - yeah if he reaches UFA status, I think they will throw him money but he goes to TB or Toronto

Lucic - Benning connection but only comes here if LA cannot make him fit under the cap (look for Lombardi to finda way)

Erickson - will be runner up in Lucic sweepstakes

Ramo - if for whatever reason Miller is traded, look for again the CGY connection (Ramo knows his role as 1B or backup)

Helm - he'd be a very serviceable 4th liner (if they feel Gaunce is not ready)

Jo. Benn - depth defensemen

Perron -grittier sniper replacement for Vrbata (low term high dollar?)

Falk - PP QB (2nd line) and potential mid pairing

Raanta - see Ramo above (or he else signs with the Flames)

Scievour - depth winger

RFA

Krug - Benning connection but only if Krug doesn't want to stay in Boston

Barrie - see above (only if he doesnt want to stay in Colorado)

Gudbranson - young top 4 D but unlikely Tallon lets him walk - *TRADED TO VAN!!

Schwartz - this player is interesting (early 20's, top 6, big body, skilled)

Hoffman - he's gonna get paid, but will it be in Ottawa?

Lindhholm/Vatanen - Anaheim has 2 very stud/skilled dmen and tight against the cap (does Benning make an offer?)

Kucherov/Nesterov - if Stamkos gets rich and stays in TB, will either of these be ripe for the picking?

TRADE BAIT

Hamhuis - dealt for a low pick (to a team who wants to have a chance at signing him)

Edler - if Tryamkin does well, could see Edler dealt for more playing time to Hutton/Tryamkin and getting a top 4 dman in return (replace Hamhuis)

Hansen - he's been prickly the past couple seasons and playing on the top line, has potential to be showcased/traded

Young prospect - we all know Benning has no problems dealing a young prospect. Could see 1 or 2 of Gaunce/Subban/Cassels/Cederholm/McCann traded - McCann traded!

BUY OUTS

Miller - I don't see this happening but we'll put it out there and hope it happens

Higgins - almost guaranteed

Burrows - if they keep Hansen, could see Burrows moved to make room for youth

SURPRISE

There's always something that stuns Canuck Nation, so let's say:

Travis Green - is either plucked by another team (or replaces Gulutzan as Asst Coach) and someone from the upper management leaves for another job or is fired

Skate crest - becomes a more used 3rd/alternate jersey next year

Discuss.

I'm going to say Benning either trade for or offersheets a RFA defenseman, to many teams that are going to be caught because of the stagnant cap.

Here is the RFA compensation chart

AVERAGE ANNUAL VALUE COMPENSATION
Less than $1,205,377 Nothing
$1,205,377-to-$1,826,328 Third-round pick
$1,826,328-to-$3,652,659 Second-round pick
$3,652,659-to-$5,478,986 First and third-round picks
$5,478,986-to-$7,305,316 First, second and third-round picks
$7,305,316-to-$9,131,645 Two firsts, a second and third-round picks
$9,131,645 or greater

Four first-round picks

Colorado

52 million committed next year for 7 forwards and 6 defenseman

Big names that they need to resign

Tyson Barrie 2.4 million

Nathan Mackinnon 925k

Mikail Grigorenki 675k

Brad Stuart is on IR 3.6 million

Florida

47 million committed next year for 10 forwards and 5 defenseman

Big names that they need to resign

Gudbranson 2.5 million

Jagr 3.5 million

Winnipeg

51.6 million commited next year for 11 forwards 5 defenseman. They have a internal cap and 4.6 million on IR right now but Clitsome so a UFA next year

Big names that they need to resign

Trouba 894k

Anaheim

52.7 million committed with only 8 forwards and 5 defenseman

Big names they need to resign

Perron 3.8 million

McGinn 2.95 million

Richard Rakell 894k

Hampus Lindholm 894k

Sami Vatanen 1.262 million

Fredrick Andersen 1.15million

Pirri 925k

As you can tell they best chance of offersheeting a defenseman is Anahiem. I think it's a for gone conclusion that Vatanen will not be a Duck next year.

From your trade proposal to get Laine, you must think he's a generational talent.  How would you feel if we win the draft lotto, trade down to two, swapping picks with Arizona, and getting OEL along with the pick.  Then we trade OEL to the Coilers for their pick - which is third.  We end up with picks two and three.  We draft Laine and Pulilarvi.  This is almost exactly what Burke did in '99 to get the Sedin Twins, and that gave us our best team and run ever.

Our best run ever that didn't win anything because we had no defence?

Arizona ain't giving away OEL just to move up one spot for Matthews.. OEL could easily be more valuable then Matthews ever will be

They might?  The kid is a local boy, which would make him the face of their franchise - until they move to Quebec City.

Pretty sure Arizona isn't so keen on implementing the Edmonton model by trading a #1 defenseman on an already weak D core.

I do think Laine is worth all that, and I would be willing to even give up a little more. But let's not get too ahead of ourselves here, it's hard enough/impossible enough to acquire one top-3 pick. Getting 2 would just completely ruin our prospect pool. With just Laine our forward core looks a lot better (even after we lose McCann):

Baertschi - Horvat - Laine

Virtanen - ******* - Boeser

Gaunce - Granlund - Etem

******** - Cassels - *********

The hole we create at #2C can be replaced more easily than the hole we had at elite talent.

As of right now we will draft around 8th Overall..Jake Bean?

Sedin Sedin Sutter

Sven Horvat Virtanen

Burrows Mccann Hansen

Etem Granlund Dorsett

Edler Tanev

Hutton Hamhuis

Sbisa Tyramkin

Pedan Biega

Miller

Markstrom

Sign Hamhuis 2 year deal

Bean in WHL

Juolevi or Sergachev before Bean

I'm also assuming we get Larsen signed, so I don't know how much roster space we will have for Hamhuis.

Sedin Sedin Sutter

Sven Horvat Virtanen

Burrows Mccann Hansen

Etem Granlund Dorsett

Gaunce

Edler Tanev

Hutton Sbisa

Tyramkin Larsen

Pedan Biega

Miller

Markstrom

using that lineup.  We still have Grenier, Kenins, and Vey all out of the lineup who will need to pass through waivers to be sent down,  And this roster doesn't account for Rodin coming over, or even canucks signing a UFA considering this roster will be around 12 million below the cap.  If we move out Burrows that frees up another 4.5.

Personally I think Burrows, Vey, & Kenins will be traded or not giving an offer.  Edler will be shopped at draft, if they can find a new home for him, than canucks might consider resigning Hamhuis, if not then Hamhuis will be moved out.  Canucks will throw money at Lucic.   Rodin after coming off a huge MVP season in Sweden will be given a golden opportunity to see if he can be effective in the NHL.

Sedin Sedin Rodin

Lucic Sutter Hansen

Baertschi Horvat Virtanen

Etem Granlund Dorsett

Grenier

Edler Tanev

Hutton Sbisa

Tyramkin Larsen

Pedan Biega

Miller

Markstrom

McCann and Gaunce will start in the AHL (as both don’t need to clear waivers) while Grenier, Etem, Granlund and Rodin will be heavily tested.  Canucks will still have around 8 million in cap space with Miller set to become UFA which will be needed as Horvat, Hutton and Markstrom will be set to make raises.

If Mccann not in the lineup next year...i could see benning trading him at the draft with edler for upgraded defenceman

I accept we would have to give up a lot to get the second Finn, but we do need elite forward talent to replace the Twins.  Both Finns would do that.  Wouldn't they?

too much unknown for our 2016 pick and RFAs // UFAs out there.. we may end up with a top 3 pick maybe not... anyways McCann and Cassels are going to the AHL next year, Boeser staying in college im guessing. Demko signs for Utica full time.

The main unknown for me is if Hamhuis will be back next year, my guess is if a Hamhuis -- Tryamkin pairing looks good then probably yes.
