Why Nucks should NOT draft Dman with 1st pick in 2016

I know Benning said if all things are equal then he plans on drafting defense.

Here's why I don't think they should.

Currently under contract are left handed DMen

..Edler 3 yrs

..Sbisa 2 yrs

..Hutton (will resign long term)

..Tryamkin  1yr

..Pedan (RFA will resign)

Left handed D prospects include...

Brisebois

Olson

Cederholm

**and maybe resigning Hamhuis?

Now that's a lot of left handed Dmen.

Top defensive prospects in the top of this draft are all left handed.

Chychrun lefty

Juolevi lefty

Sergachyov lefty

Bean lefty

Some people don't put much stock into lefty vs righty but I think it's very important to have balance back there.  Anything can change but these prospects are expected to come off the board between the 5th-15th pick.

Fabbro is the only right handed Dman projected in the top 15 but if Nucks get pick #5-#10 it might be too early to draft him without trading down a few spots to do so.  Maybe this becomes an attractive pick?

Right handed Dmen under contract...

Tanev 4 yrs

Biega 2 yrs

Larsen (will have 1-2 yr contract)

Prospect

Subban 2 yrs.

Let's talk future PP.  Is Hutton our PP guy playing left point on PP?  It certainly looks like one of Hutton OR Baertschi can play this role today and tomorrow?

Personally I'd like the Nucks to make the pick IF they get luck and snag a top 4 pick.  If we pick outside the top 4, I prefer to trade down IF there's a player Benning really likes AND the return for trading down is bountiful.  Trade down for Fabrro and maybe gain an additional 2nd rounder?

Would you do that?  How about stay put and draft big, powerful and skillful Dubois at #7?

I just don't see enough value in drafting a left handed Dman to add to our already too many left handed players and prospects.  Chychrun reminds me of Phaneuf.  Good skater, physically able and pretty good passer.  Not sure I love his mental game?

So I'd say no to drafting a Dman unless it's trading down for a right handed guy.

Thoughts?

The more compelling reason to draft a forward instead of a defenceman is that top 10 ranked dmen bust way more often than forwards.

Also, a lot of great defencemen come out of the 2nd round or later due to a less predictable trajectory in terms of development.

you pick BPA in the first round, regardless of position.  That said, I agree, their d situation has changed a lot and they now have some flexibility.  They could even package Tanev and their first to move into a lottery pick and still be ok, in the long run.
