[Discussion] Which RFAs/UFAs Do We Re-sign?

Recommended Posts

Here is the line-up for the 2016-2017 team without re-signing any expiring contracts so far ...

D. Sedin ($7 million) - H. Sedin ($7 million) - ???

??? - B. Horvat ($.894 million) - J. Virtanen ($.894 million)
A. Burrows ($4.5 million) - B. Sutter ($4.375 million) - J. Hansen ($2.5 million)

??? - J. McCann ($.894 million) - D. Dorsett ($2.65 million)

B. Gaunce ($.863 million)

A. Edler ($5 million) - C. Tanev ($4.45 million)

L. Sbisa ($3.6 million) - A. Biega ($.75 million)

B. Hutton ($.896 million) - N. Tryamkin ($.925 million)

R. Miller ($6 million)

J. Markstrom ($1.55 million)

R. Luongo ($.8 million)

Total: $55.541 million

Estimating the 2016-2017 salary cap to be around $74 million ... that's around $18 million our team has to play with. So, who does that money go towards?

Expiring Contracts (with current contract value) - without including any "minor league" players:

- Radim Vrbata (RW) - Pending UFA ($5 million)

- Linden Vey (C/RW) - Pending RFA ($1 million)

- Sven Baertschi (LW) - Pending RFA ($.9 million)

- Emerson Etem (LW/RW) - Pending RFA ($.85 million)

- Markus Granlund (C) - Pending RFA ($.7675 million)

- Dan Hamhuis (D) - Pending UFA ($4.5 million)

Yes:

  • Etem
  • Granlund
  • Baer

No:

  • Weber
  • Bart
  • Vrbata

Maybe:

  • Hammer
  • Vey

---

My yes and no guys should be pretty obvious, but with Hammer and Vey, it depends on who will be making the team next year and what UFAs GMJB is going after.

Release Vrbata, Weber, and Bartkowski. I'm sure all 3 well get signed during FA. Don't know about Weber.

Re-sign Baertschi to a 2 year bridge contract.

Re-sign Hamhuis for 2 years (anything around $2.5m-3.5m)

Give Markus Granlund and Etem something like Baertschi got last year (1 year 1m-1.3m)

Re-sign Vey to a 2 years at like $1.5-1.9 mill. Anything above, no. Or trade him since he might not fit with the team in the long run.

Resign Bear Cheese, Etem, Granlund, Hammer and possibly Vey (depending on how he finishes the season)

Let the rest go.

That most likely leaves us with just under 10 mill in cap space.

Try to move Burrows. If we can, that leaves us with roughly 14 mill in cap space (less if we eat salary). Use the remaining cap space to sign 1one decent forward and one good defenseman.

I have tinkered with the line up and budgets outlined by the OP.  Varied is underlined, UFA's added also highlighted. The OP suggests $18 mill to spend, I believe the cap will be closer to $71 mill and we will have $15 mill?  Its plenty! I believe we will have a run at Stamkos but grab Okposo as the competition for SS will be too hot.  I hope beyond hope he ends up in Canada. But I believe it will be Anaheim or Nashville, perhaps Florida. This 23 man roster eats $6.4735 of the available cap (be it $15 or $18 mill).  Leaves us loaded.

When Miller's deal expires next year it will pay for raises for Horvat & Markstrom due at that time.

I will have thrown $12mill at Stamkos x 6 years. But as above, not expecting to win that battle. This will still leave $5 to $7 mill to take another splash at Free agency in the summer of 2017.  At which time we also look at adding Demko, Boeser & one of (Chychrun, Sergachev, Juolevi). It still makes us substantially more competitive?

Math to cap  $23.7175  >   (from $18 mill, I believe will be more like $15 mill?)

Okposa adds $6.1 mill      (5 x $6.1 mill, would want 4 years but??)

Burrows adds $1.5 mill   (Buyout = 1/3rd $4.5mill, note > full salary subtracted below)

Etem adds $0.125 mill     (raise to $975K on bridge)

Baertschi adds $1.5 mill    (4 year x $2.4 mill long term contract)

Rodin adds $1.1 mill          (2 year deal)

Vey adds $1.2 mill              (1 year x $1.2 mill on bridge)

Hamhuis adds $5.1 mill      (3 years x $5.1, I am aware guys want a discount, but this actually is, and is realistic)

Pedan adds $0.7925)         Call up, can't protect on waivers

Demers adds $6.3 mill        (6 x $6.3 mill, just 27 years old right handed PMD)

Math away from cap $17.244 >

Vrbata - $5 mill

Burrows - $4.5 mill

Bartkowski - $1.75 mill

Weber - $1.5 mill

Sbisa - $3.6 mill              (Trade for 2016 2knd round pick?)

McCann - $0.894 mill      (to AHL)

Edit > Missed Granlund. Facepalms himself.  But expect him to fit as someone is always injured. We also may have some cap ($1.2 mill?) hit further made available if we can find a buyer for Higgins with having retained some salary.

You also forgot Larsen and Rodin as it looks like both will be competing for a spot on the club and likely not the AHL

Seems pretty well dependant on how the draft goes as well as how some of these RFA guys perform in these last 16 games

My guess though is that Rodin, Vey, Baertschi, Granlund, and Zalewski to be resigned in terms of the forward group. I think that Grenier and Etem are competing for their spot so one of them will be traded and one resigned. Kenins walks as a UFA.

Pedan, Hamhuis, Larsson probably get resigned. Maybe Fedun as a depth guy again.

for training camp to see lines I'd like to try out:

Sedin - Sedin - Rodin (would want to see this)

Virtanen - Suter - Vey

Baertschi - Horvat - Hansen

Gaunce - Granlund - Grenier (G unit)

Dorsett - Zalewski

Hutton - Tanev

Hamhuis - Tryamkin

Edler - Larsson

Pedan - Biega

Sbisa

Miller -- Markstrom

Like I said many unknowns but rebuilding teams are bound to be built on many unknown quantities. Hope Grenier gets called up soon, I want to see this G unit line in action lol.

Re-sign Vey at similar cost, he hasn't really improved a LOT from last year (has improved though IMO) so maybe $1-1.5M for 2 years.

Re-Sign Baertschi for a longer term, he's proving he's got what it takes. 3 years, 2M per, if he wants more give him anything under 3M. On the verge of being a 20 goal scorer.

Re-sign Etem short term until he proves he belongs and can produce consistently. Maybe 1 or 2 years at 1M.

Similar to Etem, give Granlund a bit of a bridge contract because these 20-something games are hard to get a good guage on a player. 1 year 1M.

Re-sign Hamhuis ONLY if we can't trade for or get anyone better on the left side. Edler and Hutton are fantastic first and second lefties, we need a stable 3rd pairing defenceman who can play 20 minutes in the case of injury. Hamhuis at 2M would be ideal if we can't get a bonified top-4 defenceman. Wouldn't re-sign him for anything more than 3.5M for 1 year because he's on the downswing and is going to have a Vbrata-like bad year next year.

Let Bartkowski and Weber walk. Bartkowski isn't bad for a 7th defenceman but we need to have more quality throughout our defence, it starts with our top guys and ends with Bartkowski and Weber.

I would have had a crack at Niskanen 2 years ago. At that time he was the best RHD on the market with skills to move the puck. He went for $5.75 mill x 7 years.

This year its Demers. Its my estimation of what he will go for in this summers market. I could be overvaluing him.  But the market has a tendency to overvalue free agents July 1.

And Grenier and Kenins as both are no longer waiver exempt

No one will be claiming them, no one is claimed on waivers when they are B/C grade prospects that have never proved anything at any time
