How will the goalie equipment changes affect Ryan Miller?

I saw no one made a thread about this yet. Ryan Miller has been a strong advocate towards not changing the goalie equipment and he is officially not getting his way now. He is 6'3" 170 soaking wet. I can see why he doesn't want to change. This could really effect his durability, which has already been questionable. Maybe this is the thing which will end his career? I wanted to hear everyone's thoughts on this and how it will affect the team going forward next year. Could he retire?

They likely won't reduce it enough to make any significant difference.

Why would they even do it if they arent going to make it a significant difference? Isnt the entire point that its significant change, which is why they are even doing it in the first place?

I would rather they make a SIGNIFICANT change than to just waste everyones time ..    I know it will be harder on goalies but I also think you'll be able to see how truly skilled they are once again ..   yes , players might score more but the saves will look unreal . A guy won't be able to just stand there and let the equipment to do the work ..

this could be a step towards making the game even more entertaining !

It won't affect him at all...people read too much into it.

I'm surprised they're not reducing player's gear - after all, it seems like we are seeing record levels of blocked shots every game.

Those hoping he quits - I hope you go cheer for another team.  You call yourself a fan?  Disgraceful.

Miller is an elite goalie, why should this affect him?

Will it all of a sudden take away his ability to move laterally? Will it take away his instincts? Will it take away his reflexes and his ability to read plays and react?

The answer is NO. None of that is affected really. Maybe he'll have to be a bit more aggressive but that's how he likes to play and he carved out a career for himself playing like that.

everyones reading way too much into this. The changes that will be made will have no affect on a top notch goalie like Miller.

Now I look at Anderson in Ottawa and I think to myself that guy will get lit up if they reduce goalie equipment size because he's just an avg goalie to begin with.

Only time will tell, but this is the least of our problems.

They are trying to reduce goalie equipment without affecting the protection that it provides. The size of shin pads etc. of players isn't the reason there is more blocked shots. Many players are getting injured while blocking shots so reducing their equipment makes no sense.

They already reduced it about 7 years agoish didn't they?

As far as "protection" - how do they know how much they can reduce without it no longer protecting?

Sorry, I was a goalie and even with the hacks/beer leagues I played in, I still got bruised by pucks - I can't imagine what the NHL goalies face what with all the improvements to things like sticks that help players shoot the puck faster and harder.

All I can say is, those that come up with the "size" should also put that gear on and let the NHL All Stars take shots at them and then they can tell us how well it protects!

It wouldn't surprise me that this change in equipment size will make little change on the "low scoring" NHL. Then the league will have to find some other way to make goalies let in more goals.

As others have said I have no problem with low scoring, high energy games. As long as the entertainment is there what's the problem? We will never see the 200+ point seasons of the Gretzky era again. And I am OK with that.

Is there any info on what's being changed? It would have been nice to see that info included in the op.

I doubt it, but it doesn't help him stay in the #1 position. How much we'll have to wait and see, and also see what it does to other goalies around the league. If everyone's GAA goes up by a similar amount then probably not, but if it makes life really hard for just a few guys...

Well, the increase in size certainly made a difference so a decrease in size will have an effect. It just depends on how significant the change really is. No sense in making changes if nothing will change.

For older guys like Miller, the added size - slight or not - would be (and has been) an obvious advantage. Again, it depends in how significant the changes will be. The new changes could expose what the equipment compensated. The changes could also give him more mobility. Who knows at this stage.

If anything, I can see the changes accelerating his role from starter to backup.
