Points drop vs. Injured man games lost

We want to blame this season injuries, but the following facts don't really support that theory. Of course we can always analyze the man-games lost in regards to the key nature of the player injured (ie/ Price for MTL) but that really only speaks to lack of depth, and not really to quality when at full strength.

Biggest loser this year: MTL. They project out to a 83 point season (down 27 from last year's 110). They've lost 454 man games (so far) and rank 6th highest in that category. So in MTL's case, clearly the injury to Price is the key (I know, thanks Capt. Obvious).

Next we have WPG. They project out to just 74 points after a 99 pt season last year (drop of 25 pts). How much is due to injuries you ask? They only lost 162 man games to injury (18th most in the NHL)...so...they suck.

But next we have (guess who?)...VAN. We project out to drop 23 pts from last year (78 down from 101). How many lost man games do you ask? 213 (or 15th in the league). So although we can claim some pretty key injuries (Hammer, Edler, Sutter - twice) we, much like WPG, seem to suck a bit this year...but we also seem to have some depth issues...we're not as bad as WPG, but we do only project out to finish about 4 pts ahead of them in the loser pool.

Conclusion? We need depth...we need better guys that can step up. I looked at tonight's line-up...jeez what a mess. And this is how it will look for pretty much the rest of the season. Who knows? Maybe we'll lose another key player for the rest of the season and we can just blame this whole season on injuries...c'mon somebody, step up for the team and take one on the chin...break a leg as they say...too soon? Sorry.

EDIT: PS/ I was being sarcastic about the injury to come...so don't flame me for that...just kidding.

I been thinking of these injuries, and I have to point my finger at how they are playing. You are not controlling the pace, you are sitting back with 4 guys in the defensive zone trying to collapse, might not that have anything to do with injuries? Also, when you control the play vrs sitting back is harder on your body.

Canucks' are playing a system which is not RUN n GUN hockey like they promised us. they are instead playing a Minnesota 04 model, were they literally rely on goaltending game in and out, and I been stressing time to open it up Willie.

HEAR HEAR! Let's lose 8-6 instead of sitting back on a one goal lead from the middle of the first! Have to admit there have been moments / flashes of brilliance from the young guns. But I can just hear Willie on the bench afterwards "Nice catch Mayes...don't ever do it again" (Major League).

Vancouver's injuries have not been of a critical nature.  We just suck is all.

Losing the guys we lost didn't help, but it's nowhere near losing Price for a year, or the Pens losing Crosby to his concussion.

We've had the kind of injuries that any team can expect - to guys at the fringe of the core.  That's part of a season in the NHL.  So yes, it speaks to depth.  It also is telling that these guys are a threat to be considered among the core of the core on this team.

McCann in the 3rd period showed some flashes, it seems like Willie doesn't let the players with skill display it, its a really boring system to watch.

Your thread / premise is based on this fundamental flaw.

Moreover, the fanbase can't have it both ways.  You either want youth integrated, or you go out and sign a bunch of depth forwards and defensemen to guard against relying on youth.

There was pretty much the extremely rare consensus in this fanbase on that matter.

So yes - when you have injuries to Sutter, Tanev, Edler, Hamhuis, Miller, Hansen, Henrik, Sutter again, Sbisa, Higgins, Prust - it is in fact extremely determinant.

But coming in and making the point you do - all it does by implication is suggest that you feel Benning should have signed more veteran depth and put roadblocks in the way of the emerging youth.

That would have literally resulted in an even larger volume of protesting from this fanbase.

So the "upside" of losing a season to key injuries - was the counterbalance and the excellent compromise struck imo by management - the result has been youth integrated.

A healthy team - far more competitive - but key injuries - youth integration.

What's to complain about really?   This is literally the best balance that could have been struck under the circumstances.

Funny thing is, when we weren't playing the kids enough everyone was moaning and groaning. Now we are and your complaining about depth. Pick a side and stay on it. This fans Base flips flops with whatever way the wind blows, the one consistency is that it will always complain no matter what. Get some cheese to go with your whine, then go watch soccer! The canucks don't need more whiners they need more fans!

Wow dude, what makes you think I'm whining? I'm just presenting facts, and suggesting what might be some possible root causes that contribute to them. The point being, all facts presented, is that we're a little column A and a little column B. We can't blame this season solely on injuries, nor can we say we have the depth to cover those injuries totally.

We're obviously stepping in the right direction, as I presented we don't totally suck (like WPG) nor are we as bad off at depth as MTL, but clearly we need some improvement. I love having the kids in the line-up, but maybe we should have only brought up a couple of them this year? But then again, nothing let's the Pro Staff see what the young guns can do like using them in the injury situations although it does cost us the year (or what we would deem a successful year).

CDC is not one group with the same opinions, likes and dislikes.
