Lets Build the Las Vegas Roster

Recommended Posts

Yes there is plenty of expansion league talk but I think there could be some interesting discussion on which players would be kept, not just for the Canucks but others teams.  Possibly we could determine which players will be protected by each team.  After all that, using all the unprotected players we could start building the roster for the, Las Vegas (insert).

There are some grey area’s so lets say the rules are:

  • Expansion draft is held June 10th, 2017 (pre draft, post cup)
  • NMC CAN be moved as they could be willing to waive.

  • First- and second-year pros -- including those playing pro hockey at any level -- will be exempt from the expansion draft. But if they're entering their third year of pro hockey, they're no longer exempt. (McCann, Hutton, Virtanen will have to be protected)

  • Unsigned draft picks (think college or European players) are exempt from the expansion draft for two years from their draft year but not in Year 3, so teams will have to either rush to sign those guys or simply expose them in the expansion draft. (let’s just assume teams sign these players so no college picks are available)

  • A team can protect 8 Skaters and 1 Goalie.

  • A team can only one player per team can be claimed.

*yes some players could be not resigned or traded before them, so lets just assume the teams current roster is what they are going into the draft with.

Well I think it's 10 players, 7 forwards 3 defence and a goalie so

There's two options, but to simplify it I chose option 2.

Under the league’s proposed plan, which must still be agreed to by the NHLPA, teams will have the choice of how many players they want to shield from being exposed in the draft.

In Option 1, a team can protect a total of 11 players — seven forwards, three defencemen and one goalie.

In Option 2, a team can protect nine players — eight skaters and one goalie.

Players who have less than 3 years pro under there belt do not need to be protected.

The basic blueprint includes the following:

a) If the league expands by just one team, existing franchises can only lose a maximum of one player.

B ) Should the decision be made to add two teams, the 30 current squads could lose no more than two players from its roster.

c) First and second-year pros are automatically exempt.

d) If the league does plan on expanding in time for the 2017-18 season, a final announcement would need to be in place by June so GMs could make appropriate moves as they pertain to the entry draft and free agency. Under that scenario, the expansion draft would likely take place in the summer of 2017.

At the end of next season VIrtanen will heading into his 3rd year pro.

Anyways, the point about this thread isn't about discussing the rules, we already have 3 of those, it's about discussing which team players will keep so that we can start to build the vegas roster.

It's too hard to do this right now because of all the grey areas regarding protected players and No movement clauses. That said, I believe certain players you are protecting don't need protection because they would still qualify as a 1st year or 2nd year pros and get automatic protection. Those guys would be: Gillies, Ritchie, McCann, Virtanen, McDavid, Kempe, Goldobin, and I think Domi.

So with that said, on your lists, Calgary, Edmonton, LA, and Arizona look perfect - minus the guys that don't need protection or have NMC's.

Anaheim: There is no way they let Rakell go unprotected. Out of all the unprotected you listed, he's probably the best outside of Thornton. I think Kesler's NMC makes him safe, if not, I could see them trading Vatanen to open up a spot for him.

San Jose: That's several members of their core right there. Marleau is a maybe, but I don't see how or why they wouldn't protect Thornton. That said, their NMC's might take care of that for them. Again, I'm not sure what the policy is on that.

Overall though, good discussion and lists.

Edit: FYI, Gaunce would have to be in this discussion as well. I could see him being unprotected.

Good points.  The NMC hasn't quite been determine yet as stated by Elliot Friedmen

Second, does a player with a no-move clause count among the guys you have to protect? This is relevant because everyone is expecting Commissioner Gary Bettman to make any new team competitive. There will be no creation of patsies here.

Let’s say you’ve got three no-move clauses. Must they be part of your protection list because they can’t be selected? If yes, it increases the risk of exposing more of your roster. No one qualifies for a no-move until they are eligible for unrestricted free agency. That’s either seven years in the NHL or age 25. There’s a gap between those ineligible for an expansion draft and those eligible for no-move protection.

It's also not determine if all leagues count pro.  AHL, and europe.  So if they do count as pro years Kempe, Tryamkin.

Also it's isn't only players like Virtanen, Hutton McDavid at June 2017 will have completed their second year,(and thus be considered 3rd year) and no longer be protected.  There is still grey area on this but for discussion sake, lets say they aren't protected.

Is there a reason why you are going with option 2 for all teams? Don't teams have a choice on which option to pick? The only reason to go for option 2 is if your #4 defenseman is more valuable than your #5 forward. Very few teams have that problem.

I would add Montour to Anaheim but with Andersen being the best goalie to remain unprotected in the entire league, no point considering other options.

This is how I interpreted the rules as well. Virtanen and McCann will need to be protected.
