Who is our future?

As we continue to focus on our youth and rebuilding the team, I think its an interesting time to take a look at our current young prospects whose contracts are up for renewal this year.  Below is a quick list of 6 young prospects whose contracts will expire this year.  So my question is, who would you resign and for what salary range/term and why?

Player                                                                                Avg Current Salary

Sven Baertschi                                                                  $900,000

Emerson Etem                                                                  $850,000

Alex Grenier                                                                      $585,000

Linden Vey                                                                        $1,000,000

Andrey Pedan                                                                   $792,000

Markus Granlund                                                              $925,000

I would hope they would resign all of them. Everyone except Vey and Baer would hopefully get 1 year deals for a similar price. For Baertschi I would give him 2 or 3 years at 2.5 mil per year...a bridge contract, and if he keeps playing like he's playing for those two years, he'd be due for a raise at the end of it. For Vey I would hope 2 years at 1.5 mil per year, also a bridge contract kind of thing, as he has improved this year but I'm unsure whether he can keep it up consistently.

I agree with this.

I think the real challenge is who we can sign to a two way contract and who we may have to sign on a one way contract.  With an influx of youth, Anton Rodin and free agency there will be competition for jobs and I think we need flexibility more than anything.

Definety re-sign Bear, the kid looks like a future point producer

Grandlund has looked pretty good so far, can play wing and kill penalties, he will replace Burrows role in terms of moving up and down the lineup and PK

The rest should be signed just for injury depth. Counting FA and the upcoming draft, that should take away at least 3 roster spots for next year, and the rest of those guys do not fit as well. Loved Vey and Etem so far, but they gotta start putting up points consistently if they want to stay.

We'd be lucky to get Baer for 3-4 million for 3 years in my opinion. His production on the second half of the season, combined with comments from management on his ability would probably allow his agent to push for 5 million, but I think he takes a bit of a discount for the franchise that rebuilt his game.

The Canucks future is the future core as Benning recently outlined it.  If I have it right, Markstrom, Tanev, Hutton, Horvat, Sutter, McCann, Boeser, Virtanen.  I don't for a minute think this is set in stone.

Having said that, I think that the OP's entire list gets re-signed.  Baertschi I think has played himself into their long term plans.  As for the rest, the jury is out.  Benning tends to give term based how long he thinks a player will be on the team.  I don't think he's signed a contract for someone who he wants to keep indefinitely (unless that's Sutter).  One year means that a player needs to show him something.  That's where all but Beartschi falls.  Baer could get a 2-3 year bridge deal imo.

This would be great.  Let's hope he wants 5 million and he is worth it.  If we are able to keep all these guys at the cheapest price possible, it probably isn't a good sign.

Nothing against Vey but I'd let him walk..just too small, I'd like to see size in the line-up if we want to comepete in this div.

Agreed. He doesn't have the same ceiling of potential that the others do. He strikes me as a AHL lifer/NHL journeyman type.

That sounds about right.  But I do think the summer will decide if Vey and Etem are even here.

They're all waiver eligible, so why would two-ways mean anything?
