Consequences of firing Lawrence Gilman

When Lawrence Gilman was fired, rumours were that he was not on board with current management. Benning chose to let him go perhaps to get everybody on board with his plan for the future of this team.

In doing so the Canucks let a man go who was an expert on the CBA and managing the cap. The consequences of that move perhaps is that the Canucks have not taken advantage of all the avenues available to them for cap and player management. Some possible scenarios which demonstrate this effect is losing Corrado on waivers (which could have been prevented) and not submitting the paper transactions allowing some of the call ups to play for Utica in the playoffs. These are fairly minor transgressions which likely won't have too much of an effect on the franchise but the overall trend seems concerning.

Then there is this from Botchford

Gilman maybe gone but the Canucks should be looking for a replacement this summer who can stay on top of things like that. So far there hasn't been any serious mistakes. But the above is just embarrassing and Benning should be asking himself how such a thing can happen to a professional organization.

We have seen GMs make serious completely avoidable mistakes like the Dale Tallon QO fiasco or Lou Lam not knowing the deadline for giving up the penalized 1st round pick. There was also the Ryan O'Reilly offer sheet fiasco; Canucks current assistant GM John Weisbrod played a part in this move.

These instances should serve as warning sign for Benning that there are some deficiencies in the current management group that need to be addressed before a serious error is made.

Daniel I would only have 1 question for you. Your comments where said with a 11 games remaining. Why the hell do you care now you are out of the playoffs and playing for nothing Yes Daniel is playing for nothing right now not a playoff spot, not contract, his spot is here next season, you Daniel are playing for nothing except your paycheck. So I ask why do you care now? why not bring this up before Christmas the team wasn't playing well back then. Or after one of the many loses you guys have had at home and have embarrassed yourselves in front of your fans multiple of times. Why do you care now? When you are playing for nothing.

Maybe if he stayed we wouldn't be paying Dorsett and Sbisa 3x more than they're worth

Not sure if serious but Gilman was here for both signings. Radio show hosts at the time said Gilman wanted nothing to do with those contracts and he was fired soon after.

you make  a great point, they need to hire someone to take care of that stuff. They will be giving out a 7 million to Lucic and so on.

Yup it shouldn't be difficult finding a good lawyer who can stay on top of deadlines and make sure that the Canucks are following and taking advantage of the rules in the CBA.

That's interesting, I didn't know that. Nice to hear someone was opposed to two of the worst contracts (in terms of value) in the league.

Right around the time of Sbisa's signing I was wondering if he would even be qualified at 2.9M. He had been awful with the Ducks and he was continuing that with the Canucks. Benning obviously saw potential though but it hasn't worked out thus far. I think he can still be a decent bottom pairing defenseman but with the injuries and the clear lack of depth, he has been really exposed.

Weisbrod looks to have messed up Tryamkin contract apparently and the league sent an email to all gm s according to the province paper... The o Reilly offer sheet continues!!

Is it just me or does that kinda seem like a dick move by the league?

You get the feeling that Benning isn't exactly respected by NHL brass.

Numerous failures in CBA compliance is pretty awful for a guy at the highest level of sports management.

I feel if we were not scared by Weisbrod's hiring then, we should be now, that is really quite alarming.

Yeah, and I want to say "If Stanny Bowman did that"... but I can't, because he's far from inept, hopefully it serves as a wake-up call.

The front office is filled with a bunch of dicks but when you do something like this you put yourself at their mercy.

Lol. No. Not just you. I would also assume if it was a league wide email it's not just the Canucks that have tried it.

Seemed like more of a public shaming to me. Reminds me of a university professor I had who used to do this but even he used to not mention any names. Was pretty hilarious though as long as it wasn't your answer he was reading out.
