Type R
Hey guys, I was watching the game last night, and had a lot of thoughts running through my head as I watched the game unfold, the following is where I am feeling the team is (from my perspective). 1. Sedin's can still dominate. I've watched these two battle through adversity on and off the ice, when they are healthy and on their game, the two of them can still embarrass the best in the league. I won't be surprised to see them still playing in their late 30s. 2. The rebuild is still in its infancy. This team is doing everything it can to get younger, and trying to rebuild on the fly, but in doing so, it will make mistakes, it may take a risk on the wrong player, so patience will be needed to see how those pieces develop. You can't judge a player based off of a junior year of NHL hockey. 3. The D aren't good. Currently, this team has about four #7 defensemen playing regular minutes. When a 19 year old rookie out of college, and a draft pick out of Russia can outplay the majority of your D, thats a sign. That said, what I am seeing from the 2 young up and comers is reassuring, and with the draft of a solid #1 or #2 D Man, and a trade for legit top 4 RHD, this issue will start to work itself out. 4. Goaltending won't be an issue. With Miller entering the later stage of his career, I think he's ready to take a decreased role, which will be crucial next year as Markstroms confidence has done nothing but build all year, and he's showing that he can ultimately take over the number one spot. With a budding star coming through college as we speak, when Me finally bid adieu to Miller, Demko will be knocking on the door to take his role as Markstroms backup. 5. Bo Knows! The very first piece of our rebuild actually came in the form of Bo Horvat, and in his second year in the big league, he's shown an amazing amount of poise covering for an injured Brandon Sutter. He's the best man on the team for face-offs, he has speed, physicality and character. It might be too early to call him a future captain, but the signs are there, and I can see why he is a team and fan favourite. 6. The cavalry are coming! The last point I want to leave is that I think we have the nucleus of some scoring wingers already in our system. Sven Baertschi (despite his size) has shown he can battle at the NHL level, his 2-way game is developing nicely, and his tenacity on the puck is impressive. Brock Boeser is also on his way, although it might be another full year before we see him. He was recently awarded the NCHC rookie of the year, and is having an impressive season at his respective team. If you watch his highlights, a lot of the goals he's producing are very slick, which will lend well in the big club, especially lined up with someone like Jake Virtanen. Despite all of the losses, things are looking bright in the future of this club, and I'm looking forward to watching it all unfold! Go Canucks Go!! Aircool
So let me get the gist of it. The Sedins are good, everyone else on the team sucks or are learning, but one day we will have good young players? Well, I'm glad I know this now.

Patrik Laine
And after the Canucks draft me Patrik Laine we will be on on course for a parade route in 3 years. Patrik Laine guarentees it.
TheGuardian_
AGAIN, what is this fantasy that there is a "stud" defence man in this draft? AND, when dmen usually take years to develop, this mythical dman is supposed to help the team's scoring needs? This team needs players that will/can get 80 to 90 points a season, goal scorers' that play in the other team's zones. The current crop of dmen are still learning, maybe that "stud" is already there. Or are those that keep pushing for a dman to be drafted with the number one pick think NONE of the dmen on the roster are good enough? Maybe take another look at the forward lines and pick out the next 100 pt players, after all forwards usually show there scoring potential within two years. I'd give Horvat, McCann and Virtanen another year, but the rest....what you see is what you get.
Crabcakes
Good post. Optimism? What's that! Goaltending is solid. Which is why Benning isn't going to fool with it. Miller and Markstrom for next year. Rebuild is rolling along. Early on, Linden said that real growth in the rebuild will come from the draft. Enter Jim Benning. I believe the first player drafted with renewal front of mind was Brendan Gaunce. However, the first to have real impact is Bo Horvat. Benning has also been able to cobble together a few players who are older who can have some impact towards the rebuild. Defense will once again be an off season project. Hutton and Tryamkin are gifts that will really help. More is needed. I keep hearing that offense comes from good defense. Goal scoring will be addressed in the offseason. Vrbata was to be that guy. He'll have to be replaced.

oldnews
The D aren't good. That 19 year old out of college isn't. 19. The Russian has played 4 seasons in the KHL - against men. We shouldn't be that surprised, really, how well he's playing and how poised he is - he's seasoned for his age. They're competing with Biega, Bartkowski and Weber for minutes. Hamhuis is the only veteran mainstay in the lineup. None of Hutton, Tryamkin or Pedan should be taken lightly imo - they're legitimate threats to take jobs from NHL defensemen. We also need to be careful because complaining about complaining about redundant threads may also become redundant. What we saw last night was the team without 2 of their regular dmen. When healthy, I don't consider any of these guys #7s. Edler Tanev Hamhuis Tyramkin Hutton Sbisa Biega Pedan I don't know if there's any #1d in the draft; perhaps a #2, but readiness for the NHL is unknown. Larsen is a rhd and he will likely join the team next season. There are also UFA options like Demers; a rhd who is entering his prime (27yr) and others as well.
