3 to 5? Maybe more like 7 to 10

Just wanted to add a little realism here:

I see some posters saying that we'll be contending in 3-5 years.  Although a possibility, the Blackhawks only made the playoffs once from 1998 to 2008.  As a result, their high grade-A picks have helped them win 3 cups in the last 6 years.

If the Canucks finally challenge for a cup in 2025, I would not be surprised.

A lot can happen to a roster in 5 years. We could be in playoff contention or be the Oilers of the current day.

On forward, we have a good number of prospects. By the looks of it, no elite players though.

On defense, we have lots of work to do.

In goal, Markstrom and Demko is promising

Roughly 2 years after drafting Toews and Kane, their two best forwards they became a good team.

a couple of goal scoring d-men like shattenkirk and a couple of forwards that can put the puck in the net and we'll be fine..it depends on how long that takes us to get those guys will determine our hopes for sc fortunes....

boeser, mathews, shattenkirk and ?......

Another realistic possibility is that:

1. We hit on a top 3 pick this year, player turns out to be a 1st line stud

2. A few of our late round picks turn out to be steals (Hutton is already one)

3. We get an elite coach like how we had with Quinn here

4. Canadian Captain, similar to what Linden provided

Given the parity in this league, and rate of fast change, I think rebuild to contention is a 5 year plan. If it isnt working just hit reset for another 5 year plan.

Economic conditions and the Cap make winning in the NHL more of a numbers and odds game than anything else. So far, Chicago has had the best luck and kept the right assets for a contending team year after year.
