Inge34
There are a very high percentage of posters who think that this management team is to blame for us being a bad team and often accuse them of mismanagement and so forth. They are learning as they go...Coach, GM and Prez are in there sophomore years. However they are not to blame for the mess this franchise is in, in fact they are trying to clear up a mess that was leftover by a "future be damned, we want to win a cup now" mentality that the Canucks had from 2007 to 2011. Our current team is young and there is very little in the cupboards(Utica) as a result of this. They are depleted because for years and years the Canucks have drafted poorly....actually crappy. 2000 - Nathan Smith - 1st round - 26 career games, no one else even played in NHL 2001 - RJ Umberger - 1st round - never played for the Canucks 2001 - Kevin Bieska - 5th round - solid pick became part of the core, again no one else worth mentioning. 2002 - No 1st round - traded for Trevor Linden to Washington, no other picks even played in the NHL 2003 - Ryan Kessler - 1st round - Became part of the core, no one else even played in the NHL 2004 - Cory Scnieder - 1st round - solid pick 2004 - Alex Edler - 3rd round - solid pick 2004 - Jannick Hansen - 7th round - great pick, recent core was drafted in this year. 2005 - Luc Bourdon - 1st round - R.I.P. 2005 - Mason Raymond - 2nd round - solid pick, good NHL career, no one else played in the NHL 2006 - Michael Grabner - 1st round - played 20 games with Canucks, packaged with another 1st rounder in 2010 for Kieth Ballard, no one else played in the NHL 2007 - Patrick White - 1st round - never played in the NHL, no one else did either 2008 - Cody Hodgson - 1st round - traded for Zak Kassien then moved for Brandan Prust, no one else played in NHL 2009 - Jordan Schroeder - 1st round - Played a handful of games 2009 - Anton Rodin - 2nd round - just signed, only Connauton(3rd) played any NHL games 2009 - Joe Cannata - 6th round - In Utica 2010 - No 1st, 2nd or 3rd - No one else even played in the NHL 2010 - Alex Freisen - 6th round - in Utica 2011 - Nicklas Jenson - 1st round - 24 games in NHL 2011 - Alerandre Grenier - 3rd round - 6 games in NHL 2011 - Joe Labate - 4th round - In Utica 2011 - Frank Corrado - 5th round - 50+ games claimed by Toronto, no one else played in NHL 2012 - Brendan Gaunce - 1st round - 10 games in NHL could be a regular next season 2012 - Ben Hutton - 5th round - Played this whole season and looks to be a regular onward 2013 - Bo Horvat - 1st round - Canuck regular 2013 - Hunter Shinkaruk - 1st round - 1 NHL game - traded for Granlund 2013 - Cole Cassels - 3rd round - In Utica 2013 - Jordan Subban - 4th round - in Utica 2014 - Jake Virtanen - 1st round - playing with Canucks 2014 - Jared McCann - 1st round - playing with Canucks 2014 - Nikita Tryamkin - 5th round - currently with Canucks, everyone else in collage or juniors 2015 - Brock Boeser - 1st round - in collage, everyone else is in collage or juniors Throw in the fact that between 2006 and 2013 we also traded many draft choices for players that never panned out or even stayed with us for more than a season or two. They sent picks away while they were chasing the Cup in 2010, 2011, 2012. So let's look at that as well. 2006 - Mika Noronen for 2006 2nd round to Buffalo 2006 - Keith Carney, Juha Alan for 2006 2nd round and Brett Skinner to Anaheim 2006 - Sean Brown for 2006 4th round to New Jersey 2006 - Eric Weirnich for 2006 3rd round and Tomas Mozjis to St Louis 2006 - Taylor Pyatt for 2007 4th round to Buffalo 2007 - Brent Sopel for 2007 2nd round and 2008 4th round to Los Angeles 2007 - Bryan Smolinski for 2007 2nd round to Chicago 2008 - Steve Bernier for 2009 3rd round and 2010 2nd round to Buffalo 2010 - Andrew Alberts for 2010 3rd round to Carolina 2010 - Keith Ballard and Victor Oreskovich for Steve Bernier, Michael Grabner and 2010 1st round to Florida 2011 - Chris Higgins for Evan Olberg and 2013 3rd round to Florida 2011 - Max LaPierre and MacGregor Sharpe for Joel Perrault and 2012 3rd round to Anaheim 2012 - Sammi Pahlson for Tyler Elington and 2012 4th round and another 2012 4th round to Carolina 2013 - Derek Roy for Kevin Connauton and 2013 2nd round to Dallas So you can see that our drafting history has been pathetic before Benning got here. The years between 2006 and 2011 were absolutely atrocious. A lot of those years we traded quality picks for guys that lasted 1-2 seasons. I know during those 2010-2013 years we were "Buyers" but it sure hurts now, doesn't it. I also know Benning has sent some picks away for players as well( Dorsett = 3rd round, Baer = 2rd round, Vey = 2nd round) but at least they are playing in the NHL and have roles on our team. I am hopeful for the Canucks. They seem to be drafting better and if they can get two guys per draft to be NHL type players this team will be turned around in 3 years. So we can continue to whine and moan that this team is bad and this management group is idiotic but I don't think the management group really is that bad. They had a bad hand to start with and have turned over half the team in two years, I can't wait to see what this team will look like in two more years. Haters will hate and flamers will flame, I thought I would just let people know some of the draft and trade history that has led us to where we are. I believe in this group and I am ready for 2 more years of suckage till our new draftees can mature and step up. That is all, now hate and flame away. Go Canucks Go!!!! Spotted Zebra
Yellow visor Weinrich. What a Beauty. What's the point in looking at our draft record from 2000? We did make the Finals eventually. Benning you can say what you want but his picks have been very good.

Nuxfanabroad
Probably a big reason many picks failed to make the grade, was the team's depth(about 2009~'12). A slew of UFA-signings compensated for the lame drafting. 'Tis a shame we couldn't pull BOTH feats off, simultaneously. Van won't stay down long. Too beautiful a place, to not attract depth-UFA's(especially after our youngin's are established).
the last outlaw
If Canucks were to win the #1 pick i'd be afraid of them somehow deciding on someone else other then Matthews. This or if they were to trade the pick away to try re-load instead, fast re-build, as opposed to a long re-build.

elvis15
Oh really? That's why we suck right now? Glad you could narrow it down for everyone else who has no clue clearly... But hey, it couldn't be we're just moving past a core that several seasons ago went to a cup final and didn't get great returns on some of the trades we moved because we waited too long or they handcuffed us with destinations. Owners, management and players all are to blame but we're in a rebuild now so I don't see too many people complaining about that inevitability, just that it didn't happen sooner and more intelligently.
