With a 4-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues tonight, the Vancouver Canucks have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs with eight games remaining.

This shouldn’t come as any surprise of course, the Canucks have been on a collision course with missing the playoffs for some time.

Vancouver has a 27-34-13 record, which puts them in a tie for second-last place in the league with the Edmonton Oilers, just two points ahead of the last place Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Canucks have failed to record three victories in a row all season long while they have lost at least three games in a row on nine occasions this season. They are currently on a seven-game losing streak.

The Canucks will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014, when they were coached by John Tortorella and their GM was Mike Gillis. The team has missed the playoffs four times in the last 11 seasons.

This will be the worst season the Canucks have had since 1998-99, when they finished with a 23-47-12 record and Mark Messier was their captain.

EVERYTHING WILL BE OK

Well we have had a lot of bad luck in terms of injuries. That along with the major youth movement was a recipe for disaster. Im proud of the team though. There has been a lot of compete from the young guys this year. Other than these last 7 games it hasnt been too too bad. Lets just take the positives out of the season and look forward to draft day. Ill be cheering on Bieksa while I'm waiting, no I didnt forget Kesler (once my favorite player) I just dont respect him. Anyway here are the positives from this season so far.

HUTTON: This guy was barely known let alone expected to make any kind of impact in camp. Our defence was the biggest question mark until Hutton showed us what he could do. He impressed enough in camp for us to do the unthinkable, and waive Frank Corrado. Corrado is not that great of a prospect but he was really our only hope, I see him becoming a 3rd pairing D at best. There were a lot of disappointed fans when this happened, luckily for us Hutton has only gotten better. He has played a good chunk of the year on the top pairing with Tanev while Edler was injured and showed he can play there. He is great on the PP as well. This kid has top 2 potential written all over him.

HORVAT: Although he has the worst +/- in the NHL he has been pretty solid. He has been helping players like Virtanen and McCann make the leap to the NHL. You see him try and change momentum with his speedy bursts to the net. His stats may have dropped a bit from last year but he has been playing against tougher competition because of Sutter's shocking string of injuries. He looks like a future captain for sure. The compete and dedication are still there, and on top of that his maturity will be great for these young players coming up.

MARKSTROM: Wow... I almost gave up on him when he had that REALLY BAD game (Canucks debut) against the Sharks last year. He let in 3 goals on 4 shots befor getting pulled. This year he has been lights out, he will be a full time starter very soon. Great trade chip for when Demko is finally ready IMO.

VIRTANEN: He had a slow start to the year and was really critisized after a poor WJC. Since then Virtanen has looks great. Hes a very strong kid who is only going to get stronger. He is very fast, great forechecker, and he can really snipe the puck. This guy is the real deal, and once he builds more muscle and maturity he will be a star in this league. Mark my words.

MCCANN: Opposite of Virtanen, he started off hot but has sinced cooled down. He showed glimpses of his great offensive ability and also showed some good defensive play. However he is only 19 and not all players are physically ready to make the jump at that age like Bo and Jake. A season in Utica and a summer training should really help McCann. Give him first line minutes and let him build some muscle so that the next time hes called up, hes here to stay. I wouldn't worry about his poor play lately too much, hes going to be a great top 6 forward for us some day.

TRYAMKIN: This is probably the biggest surprise this year. Since he was drafted there has been a lot of hype about him due to his size. We thought he would be the next Chara. However Tryamkin is looking like he will be better than Chara. He has only played 4 games thus far and he looks like hes been here for years. The way he breaks up 2 on 1s with ease is very exciting, that reach is insane! Just a few months ago our D was very questionable in terms of both present and future, but Tryamkin and Hutton has changed that dramatically. I believe Tryamkin is that franchise D we have been waiting for, both him and Hutton are top 2 material. So excited!!!

BAERTSCHI: Lol at the Flames. That is all.

SEDINS: They are great and always been great. What I really liked from them this year is the way they are fighting back. They are shoving gloves in the oppositions face, hacking in between whistles, and even calling out team mates for not giving it 100%. And to top it all off, they are so loyal to our franchise they will rather help us out with the rebuild than go win a cup somwhere else! RESPECT!

DRAFT DAY: We have a great shot at a top 3 pick to go along with all our other great prospects!!!

OFFSEASON: We have the cap to add players to make us competitive again. Looking at this season I believe we are a playoff team if mostly healthy. Even with all the injuries and youth in the line up we have shown we can hang with the best in the league. How else do you blow all those 3rd period leads? Once we get that last 20 minutes of compete down pat this team will be a lot better. IMHO if we get a top 6 forward and a top 4 D in FA, we could actually make a run at the cup next year. However it wouldn't be as favourites and a lot of pieces will have to come together in a short time, but its possible.

Then we also have Demko and Boeser to be very excited for on top of all of this!!!

So turn that frown upside down and just look at the positives!!! Next year will be better!!!

I promise :)

Ugh. I like the future just as much as the next guy but comments like that show how absurdly tinted your glasses are. You know what hockeysfuture projects Tryamkin as? A bottom pairing shutdown guy with the ceiling of maybe being Top 4. Same with Dobber and Eliteprospects has him as a Boom or Bust potential Top 4 Dman. You know what Chara is? A potential 1st ballot Hall of Famer.

Tryamkin is not a top prospect, has never been a top prospect, and will never be a top prospect. He is an asset for the future and potential building piece, not a cornerstone. Your claim that Tryamkin looks better than Chara already after 4 games was so absurd, that I felt the need to post and rebuff. And by the way, Tryamkin had a terrible night tonight. He was on ice for 3 goals, including the last 2 where he turned over the puck that led to the Gunnerson goal, and then the fiasco with the Edmunson goal in which he got man handled by Tarasenko.

Not everyone is going to be a Top 2 Dman or Top line forward. And that's ok. We have to take and accept with what is given by our players and not place insane expectations on them.

Wow so much negativity ... Is it alright for me to have hope? The potential is there and thats enough for me to hope. Will I be disappointed if he doesn't turn out that good? No, just having a big guy like him back there is good enough for me.

Absurd? Really?

I'm not expecting anything ... Just hoping ... I'm sorry...

Of course you are allowed to hope. I'm not a monster, lol.

I hope Bo Horvat grows in his game and becomes a Patrice Bergeron type of player that I believe he is capable of. But I don't claim that I think Bo Horvat looks better than him or is going to become the next Sidney Crosby. And that is what I am saying in regards to your scouting report of Tryamkin.

If you want to believe we have the next Chara, you have every right to do so. Personally, I'm going to wait a little longer on my judgment of Big Nik before I start making comparisons. I certainly think it's too early to compare him to players that are HOF'ers as admittedly, like most of everyone else here, I've only seen him for 4 games and the occasional online KHL highlight.

Honestly I think Matthews is over rated don't get me wrong I'm sure he will be a star in the NHL. That said if he was just 2 days older he would have been in last years draft. Where I doubt he would have made the top 3 maybe even top 5. He's 7-9 months older than most everyone else in the top 10 this year. If we manage to luck out and win 1st overall and somehow went full Sedin at the draft and managed to trade down to grab both fins that would be amazing.
