Draft and free agency

Hey guys, please don't make fun of me but I have a question. I was wondering if hamhuis and vrbata can still be traded at the draft or if their contracts are up before that? I'd appreciate a good explanation.

Don't worry most of us are nice. Hamuis and vrbata can not be traded BUT we can trade their rights. So this means that another team can negotiate with the them but if a contract is made then they go to free agency on July first. This must be done before July first, the first day of free agency. Hope this helped

Sometimes players do get traded after the season ends but before they become free agents on July 1. The draft is a few days before free agency.   A team is really just trading for the players exclusive rights in the hopes that they can sign him to a contract without other teams interfering.  If a player goes all the way to free agency, then it becomes a bidding war.  The price is usually quite low because a team usually only has a few days to sign the player.

A good example is last year when the Sharks traded Antti Niemi to the Stars for a 7th round pick on June 27/15.

OP, your question has already been answered above. Also

Nobody wants Vrbata, JB seemed to make that pretty clear on TDL day. There isn't a 97th round.

I still think we need Hammer, our defense is very questionable even with him, Edler and Tanev healthy.

With Hamhuis publicly making it known he'd rather stay in Vancouver, coupled with the fact that teams are allowed to talk to pending free agents prior to July 1st, I doubt anyone will give up any assets for the rights to negotiate with Hamhuis.

A contract lasts until July 1st, not until the end of the season. So a player is under contract and our property until the first day of free agency. Some examples were noted above, but another is when we traded Ehrhoff's right just prior to free agency, or when Hamhuis' right were traded (multiple times) prior to us getting him in free agency.

Having said that, there is advanced negotiating for players whose teams are letting them go as free agents before July 1st, so it's much less likely that anyone's rights would be traded like happened with the examples above. If we couldn't move them at the deadline, neither Hamhuis or Vrbata is an attractive enough piece for anyone to trade anything substantial (Ehrhoff only got a 4th, I'd be surprised if they got even a 7th) so don't expect anything back for them.

Oh, and orcasgonewild, if you have a general question about how something works, you can ask in this thread (or of course any thread specific to the subject):

Vrbata will be gone no rights traded and Hamhuis I hope we can get a 4th at least since he blew two trades off at the TDL as we will not have room for him in the lineup next year, but then again maybe we will make room for him which to me is a mistake!

Canucks should trade hamhuis and vrbata at the draft then. And thanks!!

It's not done a whole lot because a team is really just buying a chance to negotiate a week before that player hits free agency. When its done most guys just wait the week and find their biggest payday. If Hamhuis had his rights traded you'd probably only get a 6th or 7th round draft pick.

I also have a question, and did a search for "Tortorella Pick", but not sure where to post. With Columbus signing Torts last off-season, the BJs will have to give us their 2nd pick, either this year, 2017 or 2018. Great deal for us. Any idea when Columbus intends to give us this pick?

I would bet they won't give it until they have too, which is 2018.

It's true, though. As much as fans find things about nowadays about players, NHL teams have more insight and a lot sooner than fans hear about it. Whether than be from NHL execs or simply from players talking.

So, when Daniel Sedin comes out last week and says that the team is embarrassing and there is a lack of effort in the dressing, that was the first we have heard about it. But what are the chances people around the league already knew about the effort level within that dressing room? I'm willing to bet the house on it. And one of those players was likely Vrbata. And if fans could see it, then why on Earth would a team looking to make waves in the playoffs, want someone who believes they should be playing top 3 minutes, but is playing like he should be sitting in the press box?

I would be shocked if Hammer gets anything, simply because what happened last time with him, getting his rights traded a few times, only to go to free agency. As for Vrbata, I would be shocked if a team gives him anyone more than a 1 year contract worth $1.5M for the year.

Vrbs lacks testicular fortitude, a 30 something year old guy in a league that's making a push to be younger and faster decides to mope around instead of putting it all out there and trying to keep a spot in the top six isn't getting signed at all, by anyone.

No one is trading for Hammers rights, he's made it very clear that he wants to be in Vancouver. Whether or not JB resigns him remains to be seen, but I'm of the opinion we need him here if the plan is to remain competitive. Our defense sucks to be blunt.

Well, the two threads covering the Torts hire in CBJ covered it a bit, but with CBJ having the choice they'll want to give the worst option (for us) of the three years (2016, 2017 and 2018) and keep the others for themselves. Considering they've been about as bad as us this year I'd think they'd hope next year they'll be higher in the standings and give us that instead. It's most likely going to be the 2018 pick that we get.
