Hortankin
DEJA VIEW? Remember taking the Swedish twins (Sedins) in the 99 draft 2nd and 3rd OA? Can we repeat that by taking 2 finns at 2nd and 3rd OA this year? Lets say Toronto wins the lottery. Edmonton wins pick 2. We win pick 3. likely scenerio but unlikely to happen lol. Anyway when draft day comes around 2 good ol buddies (Benning & Chiarelli) are going to help eachother rebuild their new teams. After that it will be full battle mode between the 2 for years to come. So the goal here is to get Edmonton's 2nd OA pick. Im going to give it a try but if you dont agree please add a proposal you think may get it done. So lets first ask ourselves, what is it that Edmonton needs? Thats easy. #1 a young goalie with very good upside ready to play a starter role right away. Ok so lets say Markstrom, we have Demko anyway. #2 top 2 defender, they have great young D prospects so they need someone with experience to help their young D along. Someone on a reasonable cap and term. So lets say Edler. Hopefully he can be talked into waiving to play with McDavid. Well there is 2 major needs filled for them. So what else would they want? This wont be enough for that pick! Ok well they want to trade RNH since they have McDavid and Draisitl. So what about Sutter? Cheaper player who will really help the defensively (another big need of theirs) and if we have to we will sweeten the pot with a 2016 3rd or 2017 2nd, their choice. We either take a goalie back as a backup or sign one in the offseason. This should be enough imo. So lets review the trade: TO EDM Markstrom Edler Sutter 2016 3rd/2017 2nd TO VAN 2nd OA We grab 2 finns with the 2nd and 3rd OA pick... Deja Vu!!!!! Next years lines: Sedin Sedin XXXXX Baertschi Horvat Hansen Laine Granlund Puljujarvi - Finnish Line Burrows Gaunce Grenier Hutton Tanev Hamhuis Tryamkin Pedan Sbisa Miller XXXXX Our 2020 roster! Laine Granlund Puljujarvi - Finnish Line Gaunce Horvat Boeser Baertschi McCann Virtanen Sedin Sedin XXXXX Hutton Tryamkin XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX Subban Demko XXXXX All those forward lines look like 1st lines to me! So its hard to set them in an order to everyones liking. I know ppl will laugh at Granlund being a #1C but that all finnish line will have the chemistry to play like a 1st line IMO. As a 4 line team this is a very good lineup to have. The Defence remains a big question still but I have faith in Benning to restore that. There's a big reason why we traded for Granlund. Its because Benning plans on slotting him inbetween Laine and Puljujarvi!

qwijibo
A) you're sending close to $11m in cap to Edmonton. That's not feasible with the current uncertainty surrounding the cap. B, Edler has been reluctant to waive he ntc in the past. Perhaps he softens his stance, but not to go to the leagues worst team. C, Markstrom is a year away from free agency, and there's no indication that he'd be that much better than Talbot, (who is signed for another 3 years beyond this season) D, Both Edler and Sutter are finishing the year off on the injured reserve list. I doubt any team would trade a substantial assets for them without knowing 100% how they've recovered. In short, Edmonton doesn't think twice about rejecting this deal. If they move the pick it'll be for a package that wont completely cap-strap them,, and it likely won't be to a division rival.

khay
Not a bad proposal but I think it weakens our team too much. We are losing a starter, a shutdown center, and a top 4 D. I like Demko but he hasn't signed with us yet and he might not turn out as good as we hope he will be or take longer in transitioning his game to the pro level. And if that happens, we are doomed at the most important position in hockey. And if we give up Edler, then we are weakening what is already a very weak defence. Sutter is a player that I am OK with trading but then, players like him help grind out wins. It would be great to have both but I think I'm happy with just one of the Finns. We can always spend cash next season and sign a good UFA forward on a 4-5 year contract.

The Canucks don't have the assets to trade for a top 3 pick.
SaintPatrick33
Edmonton would probably want a young defensive stud or Demko in a deal. I do not think its worth it to get another pick. Boeser is flashing elite potential right now, pair him with this years pick and we got at least 2 decent first line forwards.
coastal.view
um, sutter has a no trade clause in his new contract... and benning would lose complete face with future free agents and other players who might choose to resign early if he trades sutter before his new contract kicks in.. (and i know sutter was a trade acquisition). remember how ottawa was viewed after they signed and then almost immediately trade zdeno chara.. they had problems for years with free agents edler has a ntc as well i think this proposal is a total over payment for that pick
BaerToBo
Goaltending is not really edmontons problem anymore. They have Cam Talbot and soon they will have Laurent Brossoit for that position. In order to snag 2nd OA from oil town it would probably cost Tanev Hutton Virtanen McCann 2017 1st. Imo that wouldnt be worth it

If it makes your team better then you should just make the trade and worry about the repercussions later. If Sutter felt like he needed a NTC before his contact kicked in, he could have had that clause in his contract. I disagree that it is an overpayment. If anything it seems like a clear underpayment. An non starter goalie in Markstrom is not going to be worth more than a 3rd at most. Edler is a good defenseman but he is on the wrong side of 30 while Sutter is a bottom 6 defensive center. Don't really see much appeal here. Any team trading that pick will ask pieces like the Canucks 1st/Virtanen/McCann/Horvat.
