HerrDrFunk
http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nhl/571/shane-doan Quote "The day you’re mathematically eliminated, you start accumulating points," Doan said. "When you get to the end of the year, whoever’s accumulated the most points gets the first overall pick." The reason why it starts when the team is eliminated is to provide the league's worst teams with an advantage. The first squad eliminated would have the most opportunities to accumulate points towards the race to the first overall pick. It's a more complicated system, but it would throw a wrench in the idea of tanking for a better selection. It would also give fans a reason to root for their team even after they're out of the playoff race. What do people think of this? If nothing else, it feels a lot better to hope for the Canucks to win games instead of lose them.

Why not make it simple and just make the odds as even as possible for all the non playoff lottery teams. Instead of dead last with 20 percent odds and 14th with only 1 percent chance make it even and fair then nobody tanks.

It gives the players something to keep fighting for as well, and I see no obvious reasons why it wouldn't work.

Dekey Pete
This is brilliant actually. Similar ideas have been proposed before, but this still gives an advantage to the worst teams. But, at the same time makes late season hockey for non-playoff teams actually watchable. Win-win all around I'd say
nuckin_futz
I like it. The only drawback is when a dreadful team loaded with vets is eliminated, they don't get to give the kids extra ice time and try them in more difficult situations. Because kids screw up and screw ups end up in your net. Which may cost you a better pick.
Ghostsof1915
Takes a player to make a good hockey idea? However once again just to point out. The NFL has no draft lottery. You have teams that seem eternally bad like Cleveland, Detroit to a certain degree. Drafting 1st overall doesn't seem to help Edmonton regardless. The NFL is the wealthiest league, and sticking with a system that works. I've heard pretty much no one who complains about the NFL system for the draft. Rick Blight
It sounds like a pretty good idea but I would still be worried about GM's being able to abuse this system as well. For example, some teams would tank even before being eliminated to ensure they had more games to play to gain points. However, it would be interesting and keep fan interest up. The one real positive for this would be that it should stop teams from selling off all of their assets at the trade deadline. Personally, I would like to see all non-playoff teams have an equal opportunity in the 1st round and revert to final standings for the remaining rounds. My argument for this, as an owner, would be that we all missed out on playoff revenue equally so why not have an equal opportunity to improve our rosters. -AJ-
Pretty good, though some tanking would still ensue. Tank until eliminated, then play your heart out. Still better than what we have right now though.
Bissurnette
I like it. What if they still have a draft lottery with the team that accumulates the most points having the best odds. A hybrid of the current system with Doan's idea.

Kanucklehead10
lol if only this were reality today and the the Canucks would probably be close to getting the 1st overall pick.
MoneypuckOverlord
its a terrible idea. lets see the dirt the bag oilers get eliminated 20 games left, but because they got eliminated so early they have an upper hand over the teams that get elminated for example 10 games remaining (like us) so that's actually a terrible idea. turns it into another ball game, a race to get eliminated quickly. because they got elminated quite early, they had a head start in adding points as a loser team, so that doesn't work actually guys. Grape
It's a better idea than almost all other ideas I've heard but say one division or conference is significantly weaker than the other/others. In that scenario the bad teams from that conference are in a severe disadvantage because they get mathematically eliminated later and with less games to be played. Where as if you're a bad team from the stronger conference you'd be eliminated sooner.

Imagine if McDavid had gone to a team like Dallas, LA, San Jose, Boston, or Colorado last year. Mediocre teams and teams having an off year don't deserve such a big boost to their team. The whole point of the draft's order is to help the worst teams get better.
