[Proposal] what to do with Edler next year

Recommended Posts

If by chance we end up with a top 3 pick, we likely have to pick a forward (best available player), meaning we don't get our top drafted defenceman that we still likely need. I think we try to turn Edler into some value at the draft .I think Edler would waive for two decent friendly markets, Ottawa (chance to play with another stud swede defenceman) and Phoenix (where Arizoan would give the moon for a steady defenceman as they really only have 2 bonafide nhl defenceman right now and Edler can line up with OEL as another prized swedish combo). Arizona is low stress as well, perfect for Edler's temperament. As this is written van is in 6th from bottom, Arizona 8th. if Arizona has pick 6-10 they may be enticed for a trade for an established defenceman

Option 1: Van-Arizona

Vancouver sends Edler to Arizona for their 1st pick. van drafts one of the three defenceman they like on top of their own 1st pick. We do this to get younger and free up some cap for some FA spots at other positions (read scorers like Louie E)  and gibe youth on defence a chance to get better (and maybe bring hamhuis back)

Option 2: Van-Ottawa

van sends Edler to Ottawa (+ 2nd/3rd pick if needed)

OTT sends  Hoffman a LW who can consistently score who becomes our first line LW once sedins retire +  top RH defence prospect

So did Bieksa and Garrison.  And they didn't ask to be traded, like Kesler.  They were forced out.

I think Eddie might consider Ottawa however I don't think we would like what they would offer in return.

I think the best we could hope for would be something along the lines of a 2nd 40thOA and Ben Harpur/Christian Jaros and at that we might have to add honestly. If JB could get that deal done though he should take it rather than hold on to Eddie.

Once again, Edler made the statement that he wouldn't waive THREE YEARS AGO.

For context, he was asked shortly after word came out and was verified that Gillis had approached Edler to waive his NTC that he had signed within the same year.

Edler mentioned, and rightfully so, that he wouldn't waive a clause on a contract he had essentially just signed. Or as he put it:

"You don't sign a six year contract with an NTC, to leave town shortly thereafter."

It was a truly boneheaded move by Gillis that has gone under the radar.

Edler was interviewed by a Swedish publication at the beginning of last year's season regarding the murmurs of being approached by management for a trade, to which Edler said that he would be open to considering it if it was clear that he wasn't wanted, or in his own words:

"In the end, I get to decide [for myself]," Edler told Expressen, "but if the team wants [a trade] ... well, then you get to decide whether you want to play for a team that does not want you."

So let's just put to bed the idea that Edler is out and out refusing to waive anymore.

As PB noted, that was three years ago and Edler has since softened that stance. (Though I will agree there's almost no chance either goes to the Oilers).

As for Miller, he also signed here with the understanding of being clear #1 and being in the playoffs. Next year he'd likely be splitting the net with Markstrom pretty evenly and on a team that could miss the playoffs for a 2nd straight year.

Time passes, things change.

I can see Edler waiving for Ottawa.....but not for Arizona. And I don't think Edler is worth a Top 10 pick. I do like the idea of Hoffman though. I believe he is an RFA as well.

Wait why would he want to goto Ottawa ?

The weather in Arizona is amazing, Ottawa not so much... Taxes probably better in Arizona as well, housing cheaper, western timezone, and more importantly less attention.

Anyways I don't think Edler will waive to go anywhere, he's invested here and likes the city too much. Swedes too loyal.

I'd rather keep him anyways, I'd rather have him here as a stop gap while Hutton // Tryamkin and others develop.

Edler is a big clotheshorse and, as Doc Holliday said, a very cosmopolitan sort. Therefore, I can see the Rangers, Islanders, Hawks, Kings, and any other competitive team in a major American city. Although I think playing on a team with a clearly established first defensive pairing would be ideal as well.

Who would willingly want to play, let alone live in Edmonton?

If they actually ever start showing signs of life I could see someone choosing to go there for playoffs/cups. They DO have quite the talent pool there.

They need to actually show something though before that's remotely going to happen.

Yeah...while they do have a decent talent pool, I think whoever keeps taking a squirt in the deep end needs to cut that out though, if they hope to get anyone else interested.
