Don Maloney Fired

Recommended Posts

A source tells TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger that the club has fired general manager Don Maloney.

The Coyotes missed the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season, going 35-39-8 and finishing fourth in the Pacific Division.

Maloney, 57, had served as the team’s general manager for the past nine seasons, making the playoffs on three occasions. The team reached the 2012 Western Conference finals before losing to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings in five games.

Among the team’s first-round draft selections under Maloney were Kyle Turris, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Max Domi and Dylan Strome.

The future of head coach Dave Tippett remains unclear.

I really liked what Maloney did for the Coyotes especially when he had no cap to work with

There is our NEW GM.    Has the experience, is in BETTMANS back pocket considering the JOHN SCOTT trade. lol

This is a perfect opportunity, and must be at least considered.     On top of that this is the season end that the owners of the coyotes actually wanted as they as they have surely reached the coveted 50 mil. in losses that they needed to attain for them to be able to move out of Arizona which was in the purchase agreement signed by Bettman.

There was a power struggle between him and ownership?  Would Aquaman really want a GM to act without strings attached?  We, as fans, may want a really experienced GM, but Alf questions whether our owner does?  Two rookie GMs in a row?  TL is a rookie too at President?

I think Maloney being fired is just for OPTICS for the current owners not to look to obvious in there plans to relocate.

I have said all along they will be the new LAS VEGAS COYOTES.

I agree with you about YESMEN being hired by Aquilini, but at the same time the all mighty dollar will speak louder to him then his control issues.

The CANUCKS are ripe for the picking if they were to be sold in the next year, especially considering Expansion talk has been going on.   Having a team that owns its own arena, and other buildings on the same property in one of the hottest realestate markets , should make those interested in expansion teams take serious consideration of looking at the Canucks as a viable option.

Wow!  You are a smart Chilliwiggins (What ever that is?::D)

Alf, the lesser than Chilliwiggins, appreciates your interpretation on the Canuck's, and their value.  I can see the Vegas Coyotes too.  God Alf hopes we win that coming Lotto.  The return from the Arizona/Vegas Coyotes could be HUGE for Matthews!  It could be LINDROS sized.

We complain about the ownership of the Canucks. But Arizona, a team that's bleeding money fires their GM when he brings in Duclair, Domi, OEL, and Strome. The Aq's aren't the best owners. But they certainly aren't the worst either.

I could argue Benning has brought a lot of good young talent in and he's only approaching his third draft. Maloney has only had 3 playoffs in 9 years. Besides Maloney will get hired by the Senators.

Just a made up name . lol

I cant be that smart ALFY , I have foolishly given this team countless thousands of dollars considering they have consistently let me down, now that's definitely not a sign of intelligence lol

If you haven't enjoyed being a fan of the Canucks, then why are you still here?

Arizonas balance sheet is by design , as if you look into the purchase agreement with Bettman , they bought there ticket out at that date as they only needed 50 mil in losses to leave a poor market.    What a deal bettman packaged up for them.

Funny there was someone in the other forum saying Arizona will never go to Las Vegas, because there already is pre-existing ownership that want's the team.

Well they could be right as this is just opinion like everything else in here for the most part.       So then where would they go as that purchase agreement was clearly designed to relocate?    Portland?  Seattle?    they will most definitely not be going to Quebec or Ontario because those are set aside for the 500 mil expansion fee.     I wouldn't be fooled into believing Las Vegas cares much about the Hockey market more than secondary, as they want first and foremost an NBA franchise in that arena as that's where the real money is.     They already host NBA venues so isn't it obvious?

I've actually read that the City of Phoenix will be building a new downtown arena for both the Suns and Coyotes and that discussions have been taking place for some time on moving back downtown.

The Coyotes do have fans. The fact that their fanbase still supports their very mediocre team shows how good their fanbase is, despite being in a 'weak' market.

Meanwhile, Canuck fans leave after a couple of bad seasons... Arizona/Phoenix hasn't been a very good team throughout its existence. A lot of that blame should go to Gretzky for trying to coach for SIX years, while as co-owner.

The Sens have Dorian lined up for the job. Maloney will be hired just not by Ottawa.

They will be looking for a short term deal to stay in Glendale and move to the new arena when it is completed whenever that is.

One team will get their hands on one of the better GM's in the league in Maloney. Ottawa would have been a good landing spot but they've already hired Dorion considering Maloney's experience with making the most out of being limited to an internal cap.

Posters who talk about firing Benning have literally not got a clue. Those are the same ones saying to trade everything and everyone for everyone who isn't a Canuck just for the sake of it.. I don't know why I even bother.
