It shows he's taking his time to make a decision between being a full-time student and a part-time athlete or a full-time athlete and a part-time student. He told the Canucks that he needed a week to think about it. While I truly have no idea, my assumption is that Demko may not want to rush himself into a much more demanding role right away, and possibly burn out. He seems like a very smart guy, and may want to ease himself into the maelstrom of expectations and armchair evaluations that come with the territory here. I hope thats the case..this Vesey thing has got me on edge about drafting American college kids...it seems they can just go to school and declare free agency and sign where they want. I hope so Phil...hate to see him walk on us..not to be a pessimist..but I guess this is well covered in the Demko thread.

It's very rare for that to actually happen. For instance, take Joe Labate.

And why did Connor take so long? His team was knocked out by North Dakota two weeks ago. Huh, maybe he took some time to make sure he was making the right move and ensuring the contract he signed was what he wanted. If Demko signs next week he'll be ahead of Connor's timetable. You know, for perspective.

Yup. But way to devolve a Connor thread into one about Demko. You barely provided more info on Connor than you did on Demko in the OP, so one could understand why you thought that's what this thread was about. Warhippy
The sky is falling panic aside I think this is a great thing for a league and media that claim Winnipeg cannot attract players. A highly touted college agent just signed there, good for the team and it's supposed public image. Way to go WPG Edit** Should retract that previous statement. Forgot Connor was their 1st round pick, thought he was a UFA college player

Kyle Connor's season ended a long time ago... Demko's ended like 3 days ago. The fact that Connor took so long to sign seems odd to me more so than Demko wanting time to absorb the season. It seems like more and more of these American kids feel completely self entitled. We rarely used to see kids trying to snub the team that drafted them because they were grateful for the opportunity being given to them. I definitely agree that it's a loophole that needs to be fixed soon. I think the NHL should simply add 2 years to the teams rights after the player graduates from college. Monty
Never doubted for a second that he wouldn't sign in Winnipeg. They've built a solid foundation for developing players, while also having solid players in the dressing room that not only have terrific skill, but are character guys (many of whom are American) that speak highly of the organization and the city: - Buff (American) - Wheeler (American) - Myers (American) - Trouba (American - though, most likely being traded) - Hellebuyck (American) - Stuart (American) - Scheifele (Canadian) - Ehlers (Dutch) - Copp (American) - Lowry (Canadian) That's a lot of American representation that loves the city and speaks highly of the organization.
