Where to Buy Asian Sauces in Vancouver?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I've been getting into cooking and want to try my hand at making different ethnic dishes, starting with asian, most specifically Chinese dishes.

With that in mind, where would be the best and most cost effective place to pick up AUTHENTIC Chinese Sauces and ingredients, like Soy Sauce, Oyster Sauce, Hoisin Sauce, etc... I also live in Vancouver, as that will help with the recommendations!

Thanks in advance!!

Generally, I'll stick with a stock of (I dont know the chinese names for these sauces so my apologies) Cooking karamel, sweet soy sauce, light and dark soy sauce, chinese cooking wine, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, seasame oil and some form of chili oil/paste. my favourite chili paste is the one with toasted chilies and peanuts inside. It comes in a glass bottle with a red label and a woman on the front. better than siracha or any other condiment.

Even Superstore,Safeway and Save-On-Foods all have those in stock now.

The Brand "Lee Kum Kee" is pretty authentic as you can get.  Try to avoid any sauces imported from China or even Taiwan.  The ones from Hong Kong are generally "safer".

This is one of the best Oyster sauces:

Why avoid the ones imported from China or Taiwan? Did you encounter/heard of any problems?

I pretty much live on this stuff.

T&T will do the trick. You can also check H-Mart (Korean) and Fujiya (Japanese). Kikkoman is always decent quality.

There was a soy sauce a few years ago that used human hair as an ingredient (has a protein in it that was extracted).  So that pretty much scared me away.  Personally, I love anything VH.  Probably not "authentic", but the best tasting around..  Especially the honey garlic.

And Japanese soy sauce is my favourite as it's a bit milder.  Kikkoman for sure.

I was into VHs General Tao and Spicey Tai Chiii sauces but then I switched to Thai Peanut sauces. Wont be going back anytime soon.

And yeah, Im fine without the human hair.
