With Demko taking his time it makes me concerned that Vancouver isn't where he wants to end up. My question is, if Demko decides to go back to college, and then have the potential for a free agent frenzy for him, should we trade his rights now? Particularly if its part of a package to either move into a top 3 pick position (assuming things go with the probabilities and we get a 4-6 spot) or get another top 10 pick?

Obviously Benning would have to have a read off the agent that Vancouver isn't where Demko wants to be. This is why I dislike drafting college guys, they can go UFA and we lose a draft pick for nothing.

SUMMARY:

Thanks to everyone who participated - the overall consensus seems to be its worth the risk to keep Demko even if he chooses to go back to college this year and isn't necessarily sending the most positive signals. I think I've been swayed to this camp. I don't love college signings, but this guy is worth the risk.

Listen to Alf.

DEMKO WILL SIGN SOON, AND WILL JOIN THE COMETS FOR THEIR PLAYOFFS, LEADING THEM TO THE CALDER CUP.

Alf has spoken; bow.

Cute. But no, I'm in the keep him camp, but... with all the complaining about 'asset management' lately, if Benning has a clear read that Demko isn't going to sign here, he is worth something in a trade. Think of the desperation in Edmonton or preferably out east somewhere, he might be worth some leverage there if its clear he doesn't want to be here.

Not much he can do.  If he doesn't sign you think any other GM is going to risk their assets to go into the exact same situation?

Nothing has happened yet but if the worse happens, I think Ryan Johansen said it best about that recent college player (can't remember his name) that didn't sign with CLB - "we didn't want him on our team anyways"

Yes, I do think agents know who a guys preferred teams are and what teams would sign him. Boston e.g., might be where the kid wants to end up.

What I'm trying to get a read on is, if we keep him, and the worst happens, how much blame will be assigned to JB under the 'poor asset management' banner. So far it seems like people want to keep him no matter what.

Honestly, its a little early to be panicking. There is over a year before there is concern about him not being a Canuck. You have to remember that college kids that snub their drafting team have to carry that stain on their reputation with them for their career. Many people look unfavorably towards kids that show no loyalty to the team that took a chance on their future. Demko is a smart kid and a great goalie and there is no reason why he wouldn't want to be in Vancouver. By the time Demko is ready to be an NHL starter, Markstrom will be in his early to mid-thirties and be traded or relegated to back-up. Demko is the goalie of the future for this team and he'd be a fool to throw away a long-term future in Vancouver where he has been promised a long career.

Doesn't make sense for him not to sign and I'm sure he sees that. Perhaps he simply wants to finish his degree before joining the team.

I agree that there are people that value loyalty, but there are also people that look at pro hockey as a business/job like Jimmy Vesey and will use whatever opportunity they have to direct their career.  I just hope Demko and Boesner are of the former type, not the latter.

Trade him for 3rd round pick?

No the only thing I would trade him for is moving up to #1 in the draft as part of a package, with the caveat that the agent makes it clear Demko probably doesn't want to be here. It wouldn't be worth a year of trying to convince him to stay, imo if we moved up to the #1 spot.

Canucks went to go and deal with Demko but were unable to even meet with him..... RED FLAG.      Is it in Demkos best interest to sign with Vancouver , I would think otherwise

You've been reading the provies too much. They didn't want to bother him prior to him getting ready for the frozen four, then when he was eliminated, didn't want to jump on a sour kid. Understandably.

They did the next best thing and went and had dinner with his parents and outlined their plans for him, then talked to his agent. Whats the problem

why is this a big deal??? This should only be a big deal next year.

Next year his rights aren't worth anything. If he's moved this year, whoever gets him has a year to speak with him to get a pro deal done.

Nothing said of either.   Both I have liked from the start nice pick by both gms

Were you not around for the fear mongering of Hutton for three months of him not signing. Hey Jordan Subban as well for that Matter, and then Nikita Tryamkin after that.

And what do they all have in common?

So what? We didn't do this with Subban and everything turned out fine.
