Once traded for each other, now on the same team.

nhl_g_carter-johnson11_576.jpg

This offseason, many speculated what the Blackhawks would do. A full on rebuild, retool, or compete again for the Stanley Cup.

It looks a retool was in affect, as the Blackhawks picked up 4 high quality defense prospects in the 2019 entry draft.

  • 9th overall - Bruno-Carl Fleming (LD, 6'4, 213lbs, 8.5B) - Compared to Shea Weber
  • 14th overall - Tapani Juujarvi (RD, 6'2, 185lbs, 8.0B) - Compared to Olli Maatta
  • 31st overall - Ori Bryks (LD, 5'7, 187lbs, 8.0D) - Compared to Jared Spurgeon
  • 32nd overall - Tuomas Ojala (RD, 5'11, 194lbs, 7.5A) - Compared to Olli Juolevi

"We are quite happy with our selections" said GM PK. "Keith is 36, Johnson is 33, and Hjalmarsson is 32. In a couple years, we expect these kids to step up, and fight for a roster spot."

Chicago has also given an opportunity to two young swedes to start the season on the bottom pairing.

"Robert (Hagg) had a solid campaign last year, and Gustav (Forsling) is 23 years old now, and it's either now or never for him to be an NHL player."

On the trade front, the Hawks have made a couple moves this offseason.

  • Connor Murphy for 2019 Tampa Bay 2nd, David Rundblad
  • Sam Morin, 2020 Chicago 2nd for Jack Johnson
  • Martin Hanzal, Micheal Gildon for Jeff Carter.

"I'd like to thank the recently departed players for their services as a Blackhawk. Most importantly to Martin (Hanzal) and Sam (Morin) who have spent 3+ seasons with us. I'd like to apologize to Michael Gildon for trading him 20 minutes after he got drafted by us."

Jack Johnson will slot on the top pair beside Duncan Keith, Jeff Carter will play on the top line with Artemi Panarin and Patrick Kane, and David Rundblad was waived immediately after the trade.

"Jeff (Carter) is the strongest 2C we have brought in for Jonathan (Toews), in the entire duration of his career. We hope he takes a lot of pressure on him, and we have two potent scoring lines this season. Jack is a veteran defender, who can handle tough minutes, we feel he will be a great fit beside Duncan (Keith)."

Hawks have approximately 5.5M of cap space to sign two third liners, a 4C, and a backup goaltender, so a big splash in free-agency is unlikely now due to the acquisition of Carter.
