[Report] No one untouchable in Ottawa

Eugene Melnyk says no one on the #Sens, including Erik Karlsson is untouchable. He'll leave that up to the hockey people.

The phones in Ottawa must be ringing off the hook after reports like this.

There isn't much you wouldn't give up in return for the perfect "new NHL" defenceman.  It would start at a top 5 pick this year just to get to the table, and then adding in roster players and prospects.

Of course we would be one of the teams that would want to pick up the phone, top 4 RHD is the position we are weakest at in the organization.

What offer would keep Dorion on the phone?  Keeping in mind that Ottawa is a budget team so would be looking at cheap players that offer good value.

2016 1st

Horvat

Boeser

Hansen

not saying that we would or should do that... but even that probably wouldn't even get it done unless it was after the draft lottery and we were in the top 3.

Ouch!

Yep... and that probably doesn't get it done even.

Keep in mind that Karlsson is under contract for 3 more years at about 4 million under his market value.  Norris winning #1 defenceman are worth more than and less available than any other type of player.

People here complain about needing a #1 to win in this league... they don't grow on trees.

Again, not saying we "should" do it, but if you are Benning you definitely have to pick up the phone.  An Edler/Karlsson pairing would make our forwards much better and probably add a goal a game for the team.

Edmonton has the only real package that could get him..

Actually I disagree, the Edmonton talent is overpaid which is not something the brass in Ottawa would be interested in.

I don't see Edmonton retaining half of the salary for the entire duration of the players they would send the other way... it would be too crippling on the cap.

Only thing is adding Karlsson doesn't make us a contender and you are trading away our future in that deal. So all we get is a crappy team with a great dman. 3 years from now we still stink and Karlsson wants 8 mil per season.

I also don't think he would hold up as well in the west against all the big forwards.

Melnyk is very passionate.

But I get an over involved owner vibe from him.

Which brings us to comments like this. Do you really think Karlsson is on the block? Or is he just trying to passionately make a point.

I'd rather have Subban.

Karlsson is a great regular season performer, but to me Subban has the edge on the compete level and would rather have him in a playoff run.

I still don't get why Karlsson and Subban have 3 Norris and Doughty and Weber none.  Analyst only vote for points.

I agree completely. Forget where it was reported, but it widely believed that Edmonton is now dealing from a position of weakness. Their talent/1st overall picks from years past that they can offer up have regressed due to poor development and continually being pushed down the lineup.

Nuge was the #1 center, until McDavid came in and Draisaitl emerged. So he's playing sheltered minutes, is injury prone, and is considered (perhaps wrongly) as not a 200 foot player. Yakupov is, in all reality, only worth a mid second round pick/third round pick at this point. However, because he's a former 1st overall pick, I don't think the Oilers want to take the ego hit of moving him for that decreased value.

And even if the Oilers win the 1st overall pick (Matthews), regardless of how hyped he is, he's unproven. Whereas Karlsson is not only a proven #1 defenseman, but there's no argument that he's a top 5 defenseman in the league. Hands down he's elite.

If you're the Sens and you're trading Karlsson, you'll want a defenseman in return, because they are absolutely thin on the blueline. If the Jets were to win the 1st overall, they could package up that pick with Trouba, and that would likely be enough. However, the problem with that is the Jets aren't looking for ANOTHER right handed defenseman, as they have Buff and Myers. So they're out. As for the Canucks, they'd have to trade the 1st overall (assuming they get it), Tanev, and likely Virtanen; and that's probably not convincing to them.
