I'm wondering if Strecher can become last training camps Ben Hutton ?

Sure seems like he's got the character for it. Check out the video the Canucks just posted of him and Boeser mic'd up during the scrimmage. He sounds like he's having a blast out there.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned yet on the above thread, too long to go through.

After reading about Stecher , his size and position played coupled with his high character I now see why JB grabbed him and not Ronning.

He simply took the better player at the position he most needed.

JB couldn't afford to take 2 small guys. I like Ronning but he's not got the snarl or drive Stecher seems to possess.

Good move on Bennings part not to go the sentimental route.

Meh, two different positions. Different styles of play completely. Plus we signed Stecher out of the NCAA as you probably know. While Ronning we had the opportunity to draft. I don't think there is any correlation between the two to be honest.

feel like Ronning is the type of player who has that chip on his shoulders. small in stature but doesn't seem like a player who lacks in heart.

I understand your point. I think we need to watch out for having too many small prospects.

In his most recent interview, Benning mentioned 8 defencemen.  Someone brought up Stecher and he basically referred to him as a prospect and the 9th, with the pretty clear indication he doesn't expect him to make the lineup.  Then again, he probably didn't expect that of Hutton either.

Juolevi will probably show well, but it could be a real interesting battle between Larsen and Stecher at camp.  The PPQB/PMD need is one of our most glaring.  If they both do well, our right side D is suddenly looking very promising, certainly far better than the Tanev/Weber/Biega/Corrado of just a year ago.

Troy has got loads of potential to be real good.

His skating is off the charts and has got very good offensive instincts. All he has to do is improve his defensive game and he can be an impactful NHL defender. He plays bigger than his size as well. I'm really excited for this kid, he's a lot of fun to watch and it shows he has a lot of fun out there as well.

I'd love to see him play well enough to make the team as then we could trade Tanev and Sbisa and a couple forwards and get maybe another decent 25 goal scorer or something like that to help us become a playoff team!!!

plus he will be protected this off season and vegas can not have him!!

The quote was 9 regular defense, then Stecher was brought up. Benning said 'if you count Stecher that would be 10, but I still view him as a prospect... first year pro'. He then went on to praise him for working out with Canucks regulars all summer.

The nine he is referring to:

Edler - Tanev

Hutton - Gudbranson

Sbisa - Tryamkin

Larsen, Biega, Pedan

Oh, and a sidenote from the same interview - Benning mentioned Tryamkin had been working out hard this summer, and expects him to make the team. The 9 D quote proceeded from that.

Let's hope Pedan is too. Last word I heard was he was attending a boxing clinic in Moscow

That's what I remember too, and it makes sense for Benning to say that.  Stecher is going to have to leapfrog several people ahead of him on the depth chart to make the team.  No way they're keeping him around at 7 or 8 either, when he needs to be logging pro minutes.  Linden was the one who spoke well of Stecher after the prospects camp, but I wouldn't take that as a sign that they're making a spot for him just yet.  He'll have to go toe to toe with Larsen in camp and clearly beat him.

Huge jump from college to the NHL. Not the same as Hutton as the Canuck d-core was much weaker. Would love to see another Hutton but AHL time might be a safer development route.

I think that's about it Larsen V's Stecher. Stecher can go down to Utica but I'm not sure if Larsen has an out clause to retrun to the KHL. As you say it's going to have to be a clear cut choice to bump Larsen

Totally agree but you never know.  After last year, I do take management at their word that they'll make a place for kids who legitimately win jobs, and Stecher is a pretty determined guy by the look of it.  We'll see him on the big club a lot sooner than Juolevi if only because he's used to playing against men.  But it would be best if he starts the year in Utica, for sure.
