TheNewGM
Joe Pavelski just found this out and suddenly I dont care about draft picks as much. I was allways pro tank. But now , all that matters is that we draft some gems in ANY round.. AND sign players to appropriate contracts not huge overpayments.. Topic might be dead since season is over. I just had to point this out to anyone who cares..Still hoping for Mathews..but we could draft someone better then Mathews in the 5th round..? Spotted Zebra
Yes but the odds are much higher we draft someone who won't see an NHL game in the fifth round. Its all about odds, the higher you pick the better your chances, simple as that and once In a while you hit a late round home run
McBackup
You could, but the likelihood of finding a Joe Pavelski or Pavel Datsyuk in the late rounds is still incredibly rare. The stars have to align. You're far more likely to get a great player in the first few picks. I'm not in favour of tanking either, but while all draft picks are lottery selections, the later round picks are even more so.
-Vintage Canuck-
He was drafted in 2003, which was one the deepest draft years in the history of NHL. The scouting is much better now than it was a decade ago. It doesn't mean it's nearly impossible to find a player that could be a future regular NHL'er in the later rounds, but the chances are pretty slim. Angry Goose
For the first time in a long time I feel like many of JB's draft picks could turn into NHL players

Naslund was 16th overall. Linden was 2nd overall. 3 career Canucks, all were high picks. Point is that chances are way more likely for good players to come from the first round or two. DWhite
Look at where Bure was drafted he's now a hall of famer, then again his situation was a bit different
NHL'er
Tavares, Stamkos, Toews, McDavid, Ekblad, Kane, Pietrangelo, Doughty are all better than Pavelski. But it's always great to find the occasional gem.
48MPHSlapShot
I appreciate the optimism, OP, but the pro-tank crowd are gonna jump down your throat on this.
Goat James
Drafted first overall: Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Mario Lemieux, Guy Lafleur, Mats Sundin, Denis Potvin, Joe Thornton. Sure, you can find the odd gem in the lower rounds, but drafting higher will give you much more consistent success.

I know what you mean in that Pavelski is more relied upon for his offence but still - your statement is literally and factually wrong. Statistically speaking: Pavleski has 563 points in 725 games. Toews has 564 points in 645 games. It was only in the past few years Pavelski picked up his scoring prowess. Towes is also 4 years younger and - who knows- may well pick up his scoring as well still being 27 years old.
