Canucks' offer when they tried to move up to get the 1st overall pick in 2014

It has been almost two years, but it is still pretty interesting to look back in hindsight, if the Panthers had accepted the offer. It would have got us a true number one defenseman in Aaron Ekblad, or a number one centerman in Sam Reinhart.

Elliotte Friedman believes the Canucks offer was:

Lightning also tried to move up that year to get the first overall pick. In contrast, their offer was:

There may have been some other teams also interested in acquiring that top pick. But in the end, the Panthers declined all the offers, and went ahead to take Ekblad with their first overall pick.

Wow. That definitely would have changed our franchise for the better. In hindsight, I would have offered way more.

JB wasn't trying to get Ekblad he was going hard after Sam Reinhart. That said, yeah I understand why Florida would decline our offer. TB's offer was better but they were picking 19th overall which is probably why Tallon declined that offer. I would have heavily considered TB's offer tho, that's a very young future #1 goalie, a 1st line skill forward in need of guidance, and a 1st rounder.

I think if the Canucks managed to have gotten the 1st overall pick that year, they would have taken Sam Reinhart instead of Ekblad. I remembered Bob McKenzie mentioned this a couple of times during the TSN broadcast leading up to the Canucks taking Virtanen 6th overall.

I also remember two rumors from that year:

shinkaruk, plus 6th overall, plus 24th overall (so, shink+mccann+virtanen)

I thought I also remember hearing, however, that the move was to get Reinhart, not Ekblad.

Not sure where that TB 1st pick was but looks like the Canucks would've been 2nd in that trade race.  Don't blame JB for trying, don't blame FLA for walking away.

Vancouver had 6th and Tampa 19th. The quality of the players was certainly better on their end though.

But this is basically what the rumour was (Shink and the 1st at least) - although it was also that we were after Reinhart instead of Ekblad.

Yes, this was widely reported at the time, Tallon said he was open to offers but never ended up trading the 1st.

It's believed JB wanted to take Sam Reinhart ( went 2nd to BUF) with the 1st, not Ekblad, maybe JB was just putting out false info that he wanted the 1C instead of the Stud 1D but that was the information circling around at that time.

Tampa offer included their 1st which was the 19th overall.

I remember that year it was argued that there wasn't any exceptional talent, hence it wasn't clear who would go #1,2,3.  Now looking at Ekblad and Reinhart, and even Bennett, this cream of this draft is looking much better than past drafts (Drouin, Yakupov, Murray, galchenyuk, RNH, huberdeau,

I recall Benning wanted Reinhart and not Eckblad from the reports I heard. Perhaps it would have been easier for Vancouver to trade with Buffalo?

Buffalo probably would have taken the Canucks offer + another asset. Anyways Buffalo was probably thinking "were tanking for McDavid anyways".

Everyone knew we tried to move up to 1st overall to get Sam Reinhart, Benning

admitted it blatantly. The other package was  Shinkaruk, 6th, & 24th. So glad we didn't do this trade, I'd rather have McCann,

Virtanen, & Ma. Granlund than S.Reinhart or Ekblad. McCann alone could be as good a player as Sam.
