TripleSedins
CDC FAN DEPTH CHART FOR 2016/2017: Hi Canucks Fans, The purpose of this chart is to reflect the majority opinion of CDC users regarding the value of current roster players as circulated by the organization (trade value) and fan base. A secondary goal is to develop a list of players who will be locks next year, will be lost to free agency (speculation), compete for a roster spot, or age to the point where trade value and potential for improvement begins to decline. Players in Purple are in need of an Analysis I have been a Canucks fan for over a decade (watching between 60 – 70 games per year) and this year has been an especially difficult one to watch. As teams in the league get better around us we also are improving, but are we keeping pace? Seeing how there is a lull in Canucks action due to a failure to make the post season, I decided to spur discussion and interest regarding the Canucks and their overall positional depth. Although there is a multitude of depth charts available on the internet, I don’t consider them to represent an informed forecast of the organization from a fans perspective. That being said, the current chart is based solely on my opinion of the team after watching 60 – 70 games this year and reading CDC and informing myself from other Canucks related sources. It seems upon initial observation and comments on CDC that we can all agree that a lack of right handed defense men is an issue for this franchise. I hope we can find some consensus regarding other franchise deficiencies and I will do my best to point out any shortcoming in the analysis sections. I hope the informed group at CDC can help fill more information in about the current state of players, and their futures next year with the franchise. I will try to regularly update in an organized as more responses filter in. I have tried to include common opinions from various users around the CDC discussion boards. If you feel I have echoed your viewpoint; this is quite possible, so join the discussion and let me know! Here we go! 2016/2017 BREAKDOWN: Forwards: LW C RW Sedin Sedin Hansen Baertschi Horvat Vrbata Burrows Sutter Dorsett - Vey - Granlund Depth: Gaunce McCann Virtanen Kenins Friesen Etem Prust (AHL) Jones (AHL) Grenier Higgins (AHL) Cassels Boeser (NCAA) Zalewski Gaudette (NCAA) Rodin Blomstrand Labate Zhukenov Beattie Petite Jasek DEFENSE: LHD RHD Edler Tanev Hamhuis Weber Hutton Beiga Sbisa - Bartkowski - Stecher Depth: Pedan Larsen Tryamkin Subban Bresebois Neill Sautner Fedun (AHL) Stewart - Olsen - Cederholm - McEneny - ANALYSIS: The analysis below can be followed on the depth charts when read from top down and from left to right and covers all current roster players that are bolded or coloured. Please join the analysis by including a player that is not included on this list or by commenting on an existing player. Vrbata: Played with some real fire when coming to Vancouver. You could tell he was pumped to be playing with the Sedins. Hansen then replaced Vrbata on the top line, due to his lack of production and the top right wing spot was then shuffled and Vrby spent the majority of his time on the second line. CDC arguments and critiques suggest mismanagement from the coaching staff of veteran players and suggest Hansen would have complemented players on other lines and been more effective in a support role than Vrbata. I agree with this opinion as I think Vrby would have had more individual success on the top line. Burrows: If there is a player still with Canucks that embodied this franchise, it must be Alex Burrows. I think he is a character gritty player (despite his rep) that any organization would be happy to have; for the right price(meaning his cap hit is high next year). I see him continuing in Vancouver; a versatile player. NUCKER67: Discussion Is Burrows worth the cap space? * Notes strength as a Veteran in the dressing room. Dorsett: Dorsett may be the hardest working player I have ever seen play for the Canucks. His interview responses during the end of the year were the most inspiring. I believe he should have a long term future with Canucks. 3rd or 4th liner, tenacious player. Once again this does not imply that he needs to be resigned only that he should have a secure roster spot. I expected Prust to be in the same category when he signed with Vancity. Vey/Granlund: Not sure where Vey's future lies. It seems to make sense to retain him due to his reasonable return for the organization. Granlund although possessing considerable upside will have his work cut out replacing Vey who has a greater level of experience at the NHL level. Fringe/Depth NHLers. It is hard to say if either possess the defensive ability to center and secure a bottom six position. NUCKER67: Discussion Reports confusion over Granlund Signing. Will L.Vey be traded? Gaunce: Gaunce will have an excellent shot at making the Canucks next year and should be a consideration for the Vey/Granlund spot if playing at Center. Playing wing I feel is not ideal, however it may be the opportunity he needs to crack the NHL. Gritty, Defensive Prospect. Crabcakes: Analysis: Competition between Zalewski / Gaunce / Granlund for position in bottom six next year. Gaunce has a good shot at the 4C Will Gaunce or Granlund play LW or C? McCann: Surprised with him sticking with the big club all year. I do feel he has considerable room for development in a top 6 role. While this year gave him opportunity to develop ahead of schedule. I feel he needs more seasoning at the AHL level. Virtanen: Expected more from this highly touted draft pick. Inconsistent play lead to limited ice time in his first year. In comparison to Bo Horvat, Jake is farther behind in his development. As a physical forward this may be part of the natural learning curve however, a year at the AHL level may set him back. There should be a roster spot for Jake next year. Kenins: Starting to age, beginning to wonder how long he sticks with the Canucks if he doesn't make the roster next year. Friesen: Alex has been in the organization for a while now and after a great season in Utica it will be difficult to see him once again looked over for a roster spot. I think this may may his last shot to make it with the club. Etem: Although it is clear Etem has the physical build to play in the NHL, his cerebral game is lacking at times. This leads to inconsistency in his play. If he can pick up where he left off at the end of the season he should be in good shape for a shot on the club. Prust: Poor signing, poor scouting, over payed player who has likely seen his last NHL days (harsh I know!). Has had an excellent career as a scrappy third/fourth liner. Unable to keep pace this season due to injuries (ankle). Will get an opportunity however, with limited roster spots available I would the Canucks go with a younger player. Saddled the Canucks with Contract this year. Expendable. SHAYSTER007: Discussion Reports an unfair assessment and Prust is a hardworking player who was was plagued with injury this season. Jones: Unsure where Jones fits within organization. May have been purely a AHL signing. Grenier: May be his last shot to make the NHL, showed he can excel in the AHL. Higgins: Great teammate, has been an excellent grinder for the Canucks but has lost his step in the “New NHL”. Retires in the AHL. Zalewski: Overlooked consistently has had poor performances during training camps, is a player that excels under pressure, large frame, aggressive, should be a role in the bottom six on an NHL Franchise. (Grinder) Crabcakes: 2015/2016 Zalewski was sent back to AHL and Cracknell made the team instead . Cracknell lost to waivers, where did this leave Zalewski? Rodin: Has missed past opportunities to crack the NHL and to a larger extent the AHL. Sceptical about his ability to make the Canucks Roster. (Risky Prospect) Hammer: Should be retained and resigned. Has value to the franchise as a Veterane NHLer. Consistently good. Questions about management considering Edler to be their number 1 franchise defenseman. Has the organization ever truly backed the quality the Dan brings to the team? smithers joe: Discussion Future is still unclear. Weber: Sadly and unfairly lost his position to younger defenseman Ben Hutton. Unfortunately webers inability to develop a well-rounded game may have cost him a future in the NHL. Expendable. Beiga: Replacement for Weber. Felt he was a stop gap for Weber’s poor play defensively however much of CDC has praised his tenacity. Tenacious Defense. Bartkowski: Not sure where Bartman fits on the team. He definitely grew on me and he still has value as an NHL player. I like that he brings the same game (although maybe not the best quality) every night. Has value but is expendable if another player can kick him off the team. Pedan: Liked Pedan’s Physical game, wasn’t a liability but needs to work of offensive ability and footspeed if he wants to compete for a roster spot against Larsen and Tryamkin. Larsen: Excited to see Larsen get another crack at the NHL. The nucks need a right hand shot and this should give him an extra look at training camp. Tryamkin: Has size but I feel he has been overhyped. His strength as pointed out on CDC, in clearing the net front would be less pronounced against larger more aggressive opponents like Getzlaf, Boyle, Kopitar. He has been caught a number of times flat footed (I know.. T.Hall Right?) and his foot speed will need to be worked on. A lot of questions still surround this player, what did you think? Subban: Subban is an explosive skater and offensive talent, year after year I wonder why Weber, Beiga and other D are given an opportunity and not Subban (I know cry me a river). A year in Utica has helped him develop a more well-rounded game and excel in his strengths as a true power play specialist that Weber never was. Offensive Specialist Fedun: I think early injuries have setback the development of Fedun however, as far as I can tell he has been a foundation for the defensive core in Utica. Brings Leadership and Life Experience, Please contribute your individual player analysis and it will be included below! smithers joe: Discussion Where Does Sutter come in with Horvat in the picture? Where will this year’s draft pick play? Back end Scoring? Granlund is a serviceable NHLer campared to Shinhurts (Shinkaruk) CDC TEAM DEPTH ANALYSIS: I WILL NOT INCLUDE MY OWN TEAM ANALYSIS(FOR THE TIME BEING) AND WILL LEAVE THIS SECTION TO BE FILLED IN BY READER RESPONSES. FEEDBACK FOR THIS SECTION MUST BE LABLED AS A TEAM DEPTH ANALYSIS (SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS). JamesB: Team Depth Analysis, RFA & UFA’s Where does waiver status come into play in our FAN DEPTH CHART? Analysis (TripleSedins): This team depth chart analysis sets the context for our depth chart because it establishes a framework for which players must either be resigned or lost to free agency. So RFA/UFA is an issue which affect the teams ability to host a roster consisting of new or younger players (or risk losing the ones they have due to poor ice time or opportunity with other franchises). Without a preseason to judge from, this limits the depth of certain players have on the roster if others "need" to be resigned or considered first in those roles (eg.Vey, Pedan). Another example is Vrbata who is placed higher on the depth chart than Dorsett but his future is uncertain (all things point to him leaving, and the canucks gettings zero return despite his ability when compared to Dorsett). Having players under contract adds to their value in some regards but how far does this take them up the depth chart? hookshott: Team Depth Analysis, Discussion RFA's are on every team in the league and signing other free agents before the start of the year has to be a priority before pursuing other teams RFA's. FEEDBACK FORMAT: I welcome feedback in any format, but try to keep things easily searchable. I will use the following format when replying . I will include your opinion if it is backed by a thoughtful response and/or approved by the community within various sections. Remember this is all for fun and information presented within is speculative (of course). Over time I will try to provide sources to the information provided in this topic but keeping up with CDC will be a challenge! Again, if you feel this chart should be discussed, shifted, altered or changed in any way please try to include these headlines in your post Let me know if there is any way I can improve this system: 1. Depth Chart Recommendation (Moving Players up or down in their Depth Position) PLAYER NAME: PLAYER(S) TO REPLACE or MOVE: 2. Player Update/Correction PLAYER NAME: STATUS UPDATE: 3. Missing Player PLEASE ADD PLAYER NAME: 4. Discussion PLAYER NAME: OPINION: 5. Analysis PLAYER NAME (OR TEAM DEPTH ANALYSIS): PLAYER OR ORGANIZATIONAL WEAKNESS/STRENGTH, IMPACT, CONTEXT EVALUATION): Thanks for reading and contributing to this discussion, I will do my best to compile responses in short form just let me know if it needs to be reworded. I am not going to assess every post but I will try to summarize your arguments to the best of my ability. Once we gather some feedback we will reconstruct this list and hopefully find some semblance of consensus. Regards, TripleSedins
Spotted Zebra
Welcome first of all This is probably one of the better posts on the forum I've seen since I joined way back, and it looks like you put a lot of effort into it so good job. Don't have time to comment in depth right now, but I agree with your analysis for the most part, aside from Burrows but that's just me.

Nucker 67
For me, I can't understand why Benning would trade for Granlund, who seems to be the same type of player as Vey. They both play C and wing, they're both around the same size and age, both are quick and skilled, but too often make mistakes with the puck. We needed a winger to join the team right away and Shinkaruk wasn't ready, so why didn't they just bring up Kenins? He ended up playing with them later on anyway. I believe Vey or Granlund will not be with the team next year. Burrows is a good player, but he's been pretty invisible all season. The only time he's really noticeable is when he's high-fiving the young guys and showing great morale support. At $4.5 million next year, that's an expensive cheerleader. I would rather hang on to and re-sign Hamhuis for less than what Burrows would make next year.
MeanSeanBean
Nice post bud, welcome. I agree with most of your comments, but I feel that your unfairly judged Prust. You said it was bad scouting on our part to pick him up and I firmly disagree. We were coming into the season with a very young team and picked up an experienced, gritty, hardworking player who willingly stuck up for his team on a nightly bases. It's also easy to forget that he was playing quite well until his injury. He was slow, but looked strong on the puck and had good position to overcome lack of speed. He was fighting for the team and doing his part in the lineup. After the injury he came back early in an attempt to stop the downward spiral the team was facing and it blew up in his/the teams face. Without that injury I do not think he season would be looked upon poorly and I feel someone will give him a contract. Just my opinion. Besides that probably the best first post I have seen on cdc, and I have been around for a long time.

smithers joe
were is stecher?....you don't build up depth and they just chuck them away...with injuries we'll need our depth...i can see hamhuis and burrows, both staying or going....benning's choice....i see the sedins and hansen top line: sutter entering...? and ?: horvat between baertschi and virtanen....and their pick for the fill in spots...hopefully a top 3 pick will fill one of the 2nd line players, with boeser moving in the year after... edler, tanev, hutton with 4 spots to fill...goalies are set. if benning can find some scoring from the back end...willie should have a much improved squad... the knock on shinkaruk was he wasn't improving enough on his defensive game...uttica's coach green agreed...granlund plays better defensively and able to play down the line up... think they felt that shink wasn't going to be a top six player and didn't fit the mode of a bottom 6 player...i do believe that these guys know what they are doing....me?...not really...
