[Report] Andrew Shaw suspended 1 game, and fined $5,000

Chicago forward Andrew Shaw was suspended one game by the NHL on Wednesday for a homophobic slur during Game 4 of the Blackhawks’ first-round playoff series against the St. Louis Blues.

Shaw was also fined $5,000 for directing an inappropriate gesture at the on-ice officials during the same game. The right-winger will be required to undergo sensitivity training.

As Shaw sat in the penalty box following an interference penalty during the third period on Tuesday night, he banged his stick against the glass and appeared to say homophobic remarks towards one of the officials.

“I am sincerely sorry for the insensitive remarks that I made last night while in the penalty box,” Shaw said in a statement on Wednesday. “When I got home and saw the video, it was evident that what I did was wrong, no matter the circumstances.”

“I apologize to many people, including the gay and lesbian community, the Chicago Blackhawks organization, Blackhawks fans and anyone else I may have offended. I know my words were hurtful and I will learn from my mistake.”

The Blues beat Chicago 4-3 and hold a 3-1 series lead.

“While Mr. Shaw was apologetic and remorseful for both the offensive comments and the inappropriate gesture directed at the on-ice officials, he must be held accountable for his actions,” said NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell. “The emotion of the moment cannot and will not be a mitigating factor for the conduct that is expected of an NHL player.”

Shaw had previously told Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune post-game that he wasn’t sure what he had said.

Not saying that what shaw did want wrong. But bellemaire got 1 game for nearly breaking orlovs neck. Letang didnt even get a hearing for smashing his stick into stalbergs face.

Gee guys i wonder why ratings are so low. (Obviously no canadian team doesnt help but the nhl has become bushleague).

Well obviously those deserved more.

The NHL has made it painfully obvious it has no proper standard for discipline, and simply makes it up as they go along.

Exactly the punishment I would have given. Just for the wrong reason.

$50,000 for the slur and 1 game for abuse of officials (twice).

I don't know if Shaw deserved a suspension for just the remark (go ahead and call me old school), but if the NHL felt like he did, they should have suspended him 2 games. One for the remark, and one for the overall way he acted to the refs. I rarely take the refs sides, but a player not receiving any punishment for 2 handed flipping the bird to the refs and calling them F****ts is setting a very low bar on what a ref has to take.

Agreed. As a standalone i like the shaw suspension. If you compare it to the last 2 incidents it looks stupid as hell.

To say the NHL is inconsistent in regards to discipline would be a laughable understatement, but at least they did something. I wasn't really expecting them to.

Was probably more a public relations thing because of the slur.

that could be a series changer for the hawks! no more bad crap for 1 game! Shaw hurt them by taking that dumb penalty in the last couple of minutes. Go Blues! The blues are my Canucks for this years playoffs.

Shaw scored a goal and set another two up - I'd look at their underperforming players before criticising Shaw for taking a bad penalty. At least he was contributing. Where is Toews in this series? Hossa? Ladd? Teravainen?

Pretty much. No league wants to draw the ire of the LGBT community. Heck, the Walking Dead was raked over the coals for killing a character who happened to be a lesbian.

Had Shaw said that to a fellow player, would he have received the same suspension?

This type of language goes on literally all the time in the NHL/hockey in general. The only reason he's getting fined is because the camera was on his face at the time and someone got their panties in a bunch.

Players are representatives of the NHL and their brand. In business, if any employee made remarks like that in public they would be terminated.

I would say he's lucky all they did was give him 1 game and a fine equivalent to pocket change for him.

I think it sets a good example, and more importantly for the NHL a good precedent.

Now, it's just up to them to maintain this standard.

Let's not get carried away now. The league has an issue maintaining any level of consistency.

Shaw is paid $2M for the season, that is a little over $24K per game.

There is no pay for playoff hockey so the 1 game suspension holds no monetary loss for Shaw,

A token $5K fine is nothing.

But he's going to take sensitivity training.....
