J.I.A.H.N
Morning All Living on Vancouver Island, I started thinking why I like to come to Vancouver and how my likes may be the same reasons that would entice those college, European and Pro UFA's. #1. Reason is the beauty of Vancouver, working in the tourism industry, most people that talk to me from across NA say that Vancouver is one of the most beautiful places in NA and they would love to live here. (Beautiful Mountains and fresh Air!) #2. For the Rich and famous, Vancouver is a very affordable place where homes can be found very close to the downtown core that can offer a short commute from home to down town. Now, I know this sound crazy to you regular folk, but compared to other larger metro's, Vancouver has a lot to offer very close at hand. Remember, that these hockey players do not drive the streets at the same time as you are heading to work! 30 minutes can move you along way, in none rush hour traffic in comparison to places like Chicago, LA, Toronto and NY, etc. #3. Diversity..............we are a very diverse city, with amazing restaurants, and entertainment #4. Weather.............great Springs, Summers and Falls, with mild Winters............all my friends that are from back east say this.......we are spoiled! Now for the players work options, we are in a rebuild or retool for JB, but this offers greater employment opportunities for those looking to grow with an organization (maybe not the optimum for the older UFA's) And Vancouver is a spend to the cap team, which argues well for the future. (And older UFA's love this.....aka Miller 6 million!) These are reasons why players do not want to leave after being imbedded into your community.............it is a great place to play and to live! And it is why we are on so many UFA's lists to play. Now that we are accumulating so many young assets, players will see this as a plus, both young and old...........now we may take a few years to dig out of this mess................but I have to admit, Benning's recent moves have shown some very positive signs! If Benning is smart, he gives every player coming to Vancouver for a job interview a helicopter ride of Vancouver city............it is spectacular from the air! Oh yes, and a fly by of Southern Vancouver Island! And of course our passionate fans love our hockey!
LordHorvat
Maybe Benning will offer a helicopter view of the city while having a chat with Drake Caggiula since he's stopping by Vancouver for a visit . Yes it's a lovely city but there are couple things that may prevent a UFA from signing here. 1) the media, 2) the taxes 3) fickle fan base 4) doesn't help being at the bottom of the standings. UFAS will want to sign here if 1) there's a desire to win with a clear direction the team wants to go ( are we a playoff contending team or a young faster rebuilding team ) 2) being over payed. tybarber
Agree. Plus It's a very literate city too.
mpt
Unless they have a connection to players on the team, management or they are local boys, the only reason UFAs should sign here is we have cap space to over pay them.
You Mad Bro?
Come to Vancouver. We have concrete and rain. O and you can spend half a million dollars on a five hundred square feet apartment!! Wohooo
appleboy
Young players will sign here because we are in a rebuild. That means there is opportunities for them to carve out a place for themselves.

There are very, very attractive southern Californian cities on the outskirts of LA, San Jose, and Anaheim that rival Vancouver's "view". Quote #2. Now, I know this sound crazy to you regular folk, but compared to other larger metro's, Vancouver has a lot to offer very close at hand. Vancouver is nowhere near being a large metropolitan city. Like nowhere. New York (over 300 sq. mi) dwarfs Vancouver (70 sq. mi.) in size and scope, with Manhattan alone being closer to Vancouver's size. And NY, LA, Toronto, Chicago, and Montreal are far more interesting with way more to offer from any perspective. Quote Remember, that these hockey players do not drive the streets at the same time as you are heading to work! Not always, but sometimes they do. Quote 30 minutes can move you along way, in none rush hour traffic in comparison to places like Chicago, LA, Toronto and NY, etc. While those cities have crushing rush hours due to the sheer size of the area and population, Vancouver has a completely assbackwards infrastructure that actually puts it as one of the worst cities for traffic congestion on the continent. Quote #3. Diversity..............we are a very diverse city, with amazing restaurants, and entertainment Still nowhere near NY, LA, Toronto, Montreal, or Chicago. Restaurants are pretty great here, but from an entertainment perspective, Vancouver has an anemic, almost non-existent arts and culture scene. Quote #4. Weather.............great Springs, Summers and Falls, with mild Winters............all my friends that are from back east say this.......we are spoiled! And eight months of wrist-slitting rain and slate grey skies.... Oh yes, and a fly by of Southern Vancouver Island! And of course our passionate fans love our hockey! Vancouver is still a fishbowl with very little major league sports teams to attract people away from the Canucks. This lends itself to the Canucks being somewhat of a focal point for sports fans, almost to the point of an obsession, and not always a good one. Quite a few players in the league aren't exactly jumping at the opportunity of being the centre of attention at all times, and prefer the anonymity that truly large, and truly cosmopolitan cities offer. Something Vancouver simply can't.
ice orca
Big time UFA's would probably only sign here right now is if you overpay through the nose. If we were real contenders it would make it a tad easier. Take a choice if you were a UFA right now Vancouver vs US cities in the sun belt or an original 6 team. The trend has been that way for awhile now. Even Toronto could not lure Nash and they were going to open the bank for him.
LaBamba
I'm sorry guys, but Vancouver is extremely overrated. Here are reasons players won't go. 1. Weather. When it's not raining, it's not hot either. 2. Multicultural. Let's be honest, a lot of white American and Canadian millionaires in the prime of their life are more annoyed with multiculturalism than happy about it. 3. Media/ fan base. There isn't a more cutthroat media or fan base in North America. The arena is quiet. I once farted when D. sedin scored a goal and half the rink heard my fart while the other half heard the goalies F-bomb. 4. Expensive. How you can say housing is affordable in Vancouver absolutely blows my mind. You can buy a 10 acre mansion in Texas, St.Louis, Arz, California, Carolina, Fla, Ect for under 1m. In Vancouver 1m buys you a house in the ghetto. 5. Ocean. The only thing you can do with the Ocean in Vancouver is look at it, smell the horrific funk, and go fishing. 6. Downtown, city flavour. This is the case for every city in Canada. They are boring. For those who have never been anywhere Vancouver may seem pretty awesome, but in reality it's pretty lame. It doesn't even begin to compete with places like. NY, Chi, Nash, California, Fla, Tx. 7. Privacy, living in a Canadian city as a NHL player. Would be the end of a normal life. In the big cities of the US, you can enjoy the big crowds while you play, then go home and be a normal person. 8. We have the 3rd worst team in the league. If I'm a UFA 2 things are at the top of my list career wise. Will I win? And can I get a lot of points. Not happening inVancouver. The city of Vancouver is the most beautiful in Canada without a doubt but most of that comes from the landscape. If you crave the outdoors of western Canada, do what every other Canadian hockey player does and buy a Cabin on the Ok or Shwap. Where you can play in the sun and enjoy water sports while still being able to take a quick flight anywhere you want from Kelowna.

Where'd Luongo?
Don't forget that the fans don't show up when you don't perform and riot when you lose important games.
Toews
UFAs are attracted to winners. You can pump the tires as much as you want but it's going to be hard convincing players to come play in Vancouver at a reasonable price when the team just finished in 28th place. VegasCanuck
This organization will always spend to the cap in an attempt to build a team that will compete and challenge. To a player who's entering the league or even guys looking to make a change, do you want to sign with a team that won't spend, or one that will? Plus, we are gosh darnit...damn nice fans.....except the rabid, foaming at the mouth ones...
CanuckleHorse
The Edmonton Oilers – currently the second-worst team in the NHL – are usually looked over because of their “climate, lack of success,” Custance wrote.

Pretty much this but I will add the allure of places with no state tax... Las Vegas is gonna look hella good to UFAs... why give up a large chunk of your paycheck for an ocean/mountain view? You can buy a vacation home in place like that with the money you save on taxes. It's not like the rigours of an NHL schedule would let them bliss out on ocean and mountain views all day everyday anyway.

(probably because you were born there and not transplanted to Vancouver from the Eastern provinces like most in Vancouver). They ( transplanted Vancouverites) do nothing but whine, and moan about rain, traffic and housing costs, yet none of you go home!
