LordHorvat
Just out of curiosity, since I never watched a draft lottery on TV, how is it actually done? Do they use ping pong balls, or is it presented beforehand and revealed in an envelope?
Gaudette Celly
WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN? Saturday, April 30, 7 p.m. ET. WHERE WILL IT TAKE PLACE? The winner will be revealed at the Hockey Central studio inside CBC headquarters in downtown Toronto. WHERE CAN I WATCH IT? Prior to puck drop for a marquee second-round series game on CBC, starting at 7 p.m. ET. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/2016-nhl-draft-lottery-odds-simulator-auston-matthews-maple-leafs-oilers-toronto-april-30/ The draw will already be done, they will just show the results. Kevin Biestra
They staple the team logo's to the backs of 14 rabbits and set them loose in a field. Hunters open fire and the last rabbit standing is the 1st overall pick.

Yeah watch Arizona gets 1st pick, I doubt it though because that would make it very obvious but wouldn't surprise me.

It is stupid that they do it out of sight and never mention any auditors from KPMG or anything like you find at the smallest local lottery draws in order to give the optics of fairness and impartiality. Why even let the appearance of unfairness creep in? Just the normal arrogance of the NHL brass who don't feel like they need to justify anything to the paying customers or franchise holders that aren't part of their inner circle. Time Lord
55 minutes ago, Positive Canuck said: because draws behind closed doors are always legit. what a joke of a league . There is NO rigging the draft lottery. One of the top law firms in NA handles the NHL lottery. This is a law firm that has much bigger clients than the NHL. Their credibility matters as if anyone finds out that they rigged the lottery every case they worked on will be called into question. The NHL is small fry to them, rigging the lottery is simply not worth their time. Ask yourself why they would risk billions in revenue, anything the NHL offers will be nothing more than a drop in the bucket. Televising the lottery is stupid. It's just a bunch of people sitting in one conference room. Each team has its representative there. There is one person from the law firm handling the lottery. Each team has sets of numbers assigned to them. For example if there are 1000 sets of numbers then the team finishing last is assigned 200 sets of numbers. Each number is then picked on a computer with likely a RNG. After every number is picked (I believe there are 4 numbers), the set that corresponds to a particular team wins the lottery. The only difference this year is this process will be repeated three times. Televising a bunch of numbers picked from a computer will not bring the lottery any transparency. The tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists will still argue that the lottery is rigged despite the above reasons. This is the second year in a row I have to make this post and I am sure I will be making it again next year when this same useless conversation pops up again. The lottery isn't rigged. HC20.0
1 hour ago, Positive Canuck said: because draws behind closed doors are always legit. what a joke of a league . I know. Though, after seeing the complete look of dejection/anger on Bettman and Daly's faces after Edmonton got McDavid, I'm not sure it is rigged. We may have a chance. Watermelons
The lottery is NOT rigged. It's a fun theory but in real life the NHL is a multi-billion dollar industry and one of the biggest sports leagues in North America. Yes, the officiating and suspensions that the NHL hand out are a joke but the draft lottery is serious business. If anyone actually read the Sportsnet article that Hutton Wink linked at the top of this thread you would have read that the NHL hired Ernst and Young to supervise the lottery. Ernst and Young is one of the Big 4 Accounting firms in the world and they have a reputation to protect as well. Nothing shady will be happening under their watch. Besides, if the lottery was rigged the NHL would have jumped at the chance to give McDavid to Arizona last year...I don't think any owner in the league is happy that Edmonton won the lottery (aside from Katz) and unhappy owners means an unhappy Bettman. That was probably the worst possible result for the NHL last year.
