[Value of] Alex Burrows @ 2.25 Cap hit ?

Recommended Posts

Assuming the Canucks wanted to trade away Burrows, while retaining 2.25 million (maximum allowed), what would an Alex Burrows at 2.25 million be worth ?

My 'approximation' (and i have just a guess, nothing more) would be a late 3rd rounder/4th rounder and a journeyman AHL-er in return. Is that a fair idea or would Burrows deal fall under the 'toxic' category that no team would want under any circumstance ? Or, is he worth a lot more than i give him credit for ?

In my opinion, he is worth more to us as a 4th line grinder and mentor for the youth movement than he would be in any kind of trade return. We would have to retain half his salary and would still probably only get either a 4th/5th round pick OR an AHL quality forward with no NHL potential. It just wouldn't be worth it IMO.

@ $2.25 million?

Do we really need him?

No, as in for other teams. What will other teams be willing to offer us for 2.25 million dollar Burrows ? He as a player is worth more to the Canucks than not, but freeing up some cap-space and more importantly, roster space would be the main benefit of moving/buying out Burrows.

More importantly, What would Burrows be worth if the other team is only paying $1.5-2.0 in real dollars.  Many teams aren't bumping up against the cap ceiling and work on internal budgets.  Even retaining $1.5 million in cap ($1 million in salary) makes him pretty attractive one would think.

It is also not out of the realm of possibility that we could unload one of our cheap extra young depth players who need to clear waivers to get sent down (not all of them are going to be on the team) and in return for receiving that, a team will take either Burrows or Higgins without salary being retained.

I think he'd have more value at the deadline with 50% retention, but he's still a decent bottom-six guy who can play defensive minutes and chip in 20-25 points. With just one year left on his deal, I'd be very surprised if there wasn't at least a few teams out there interested for a mid-round pick. He can still be a useful player in the right situation, even if he's not capable of playing on a top line anymore.

Salary cap shouldn't be an issue for the Canucks for this upcoming season, so IMHO, any discussion related to Burrows and salary cap is moot.

As a few have already stated, Burrows' value to the Canucks is far greater as a 4th line roster player/veteran presence.  I've been banging the trade/buy-out Burrows drum for 2 years, but given what I view as the current set of circumstances (i.e., plenty of cap space for 2016-2017, lots of young 'uns, Burrows' reputation as a solid senior citizen, Burrows being useful as a third/fourth liner, etc.), Burrows on an expiring contract is worth more to the Canucks on the roster vs. a late round pick & journeyman AHLer (which is what he would fetch).

I never thought I would have said this even as recent as this past autumn, but I would be all for Burrows retiring as a Canuck.

Heck, for 2m I'd want him on the Canucks as a 4th line winger.  He's seriously lost his previous scoring touch but is still a gritty player who can chip in.

Personally, I would not at all be surprised (nor upset) to see him play out his remaining year.  We really don't need a lot of cap space this coming year anyway.

This.

He's still worth something to us over the course of this season.

If he can bring us something more at the trade deadline, that would be great for us, for him and for the team that would pick him up.

This seems like deadline trade rather than an offseason one. It seems unlikely that Burrows bounces back but he can still provide value to a team playing 4th line minutes and I would guess some team might pay a 3rd for that. It will also give him a chance at winning a Cup.

And he is a great leader in the locker room and on the ice. If the Canucks somehow manage a top 3 pick, I don't think the Nucks have to run out and get a top 6 forward.  Just keep Burr to mentor for another year
