Red Wings' new home: Little Caesars Arena

The Detroit Red Wings' new home will be named Little Caesars Arena.

The 20,000-seat building is scheduled to open in 2017-18. The Red Wings have played in Joe Louis Arena since 1979.

The announcement was made by Olympia Entertainment and Little Caesars on Thursday.

Little Caesars was founded by Red Wings owners Mike and Marian Ilitch.

"This sponsorship is another major investment by the Ilitch companies in Detroit, its great people and its comeback story. It's a proud day for Little Caesars, the Detroit Red Wings, our community, and for my parents Mike and Marian Ilitch," said Christopher Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc. "To have their first business as the namesake of this building in their beloved hometown is an amazing tribute to their careers and their love for the people here."

Interesting naming for an arena to replace a classic like the Joe. Belongs in the awkwardly named bunch of arenas that plague the NBA:

Quicken Loans Arena (Cleveland Cavaliers)

Sleep Train Arena (Sacramento Kings)

Smoothie King Center (New Orleans Pelicans)

Talking Stick Resort Arena (Phoenix Suns)

Vivint Smart Home Arena (Utah Jazz)

Sounds bad but given the Ilitch tie in a no brainer.  Most of the owners are money grubbing whores anyway who would sell naming rights to anyone for the right amount. What next Tampa Bay Tampons Arena?  Still can't believe the National Hokey League hasn't sold advertising rights yet on the uniforms.

And Ottawa just got permission to negotiate for a downtown arena too.

Detroit

Edmonton

Ottawa

Vegas

Quebec

Calgary

Seattle

Lots of new arenas coming. Up goes the cap!

No new arena for Calgary in the near future.  Government doesn't want to throw tax dollars into a new home for billionaire owners in tough economic times.  Especially for a game that the average joe who pays those taxes can't afford to bring his family to.

That's their opinion today. Tomorrow it will change.

Calgary is only a matter of time, and it's all posturing between Edwards, the city and the province.

That building will come soon enough.
