If we get 1st Pick, will Jim discuss his thoughts out loud well before June draft?

GM Benning is surprisingly open about how he does his job.  If we get the first pick (unlikely, I know) will he be true to form and discuss in public where he is leaning, what he thinks of the top 3, ultimately who he thinks he will choose, who the organization likes, etc.  Will he mention scouts and others, Linden's thoughts, etc.?

Why would he?

You need to leave the door open to get an overpayment offer from Arizona. (You know, the team whose GM publicly stated they weren't going to make a big offer for him, and then was fired shortly thereafter?) If JB even makes a hint of a hint that they may not take Matthews, then he does nothing but weaken his position.

Doubt he will tip his hand. He will want to make sure that other GM's are kept guessing.

Considering how close the top 3 are, if we had the #1 overall, and Benning was more interested in Laine than Matthews, he might consider a flip to #2 if someone wanted to make it worth it to us, to secure Matthews with the #1 overall.

From Benning's interview today, it's quite clear that they have Matthews at #1 and Laine at #2. Further, it would take a massive trade proposal for them to consider moving the pick, but they would be open to offers.

Yup, he said so already.

Benning would be wise to keep quiet until tomorrow.  If we select first, look to see who selects second and see what their needs are.  If they need a winger, then he talks more about how great he thinks Laine is.  If they need a Center, then he talks more about how great Matthews is.

Then he connects with that GM and sees if they want to trade up.

The fact is that we need both positions.  Center is the more important position, yet we already have a glut at that position for at least the next 2 years.  If McCann ever improves his faceoff game, and becomes an elite centerman (which I doubt) then the glut is even worse.

But bottom line: We could use either player.  And if we did draft #1 overall, I'd be perfectly ok with trading down to 2nd.  I wonder how much more that would garner from the #2 team - especially considering over the last couple of days several sources are saying that Laine might be better suited as first pick.

What I would like to hear is "Nobody's leaving here with the Finn's except us".

Go for the "Full Monty", strip down if necessary, trade whoever for the two 18 yr old's. Jesse could play center if needed, they did it with Linden.

Trade any player(s) on the team that could be moved, trade salary, If it takes Horvat and Virtanen, then it does.

There are a few players/prospects I wouldn't like to see go but, to set up the team for a decade or more by getting these high level prospects and with the knowledge that next years draft is deep in defense men.

This team is at least three years, with very shrewd and bold trading and drafting, from being a contender.

Then there is the expansion draft, why not position the team now for that draft, these kids won't be exposed. Think of it this way, the Nucks are going to lose a top prospect or dman in that draft, so think ahead and trade that player now for a top player that doesn't need to be protected.

The best scenario is if the Nucks get the 1rst (duh!) and Arizona the second or third with Edmonton third. Canucks offer #1, McCann or Pedan and Hutton or Tanev to Arizona, Arizona offers OEL to Edmonton with ? for their #1, Arizona then moves Edmonton's #1 and their #1 and Domi to the Canucks.

Canucks - Laine - Jesse - Domi

Coyotes - Mathews - McCann/Pedan - Hutton/Tanev

Oilers - OEL - ?

Canucks end up with two instant lines, Domi - Horvat - Sven, Finns - Grandlund

Coyotes end up with the marketing asset, Mathews - Hutton/Tanev and maybe something out of Edmonton (the Yotes still have Strome)

Oilers end up with their big need, a top dman, - OEL and maybe a pick or ? (goalie?) from the Yotes.

Out of that the Nucks will still need another year unless there is UFA or RFA or a surprising trade accomplished.

Edmonton could be seen as the big winner getting OEL

Arizona is a winner as well, Mathews and a solid dman.

Welcome to Fantasy Island.

Had a similar trade scenario in my mind as well but you took it to another level. While it would certainly be quite the feat to land both Finns, we'd be losing 2 solid defenceman, which we need as much as Edmonton does.

I would be willing to part with Edler+ and say our 4-5th overall for Edmontons 2-3 OA but I doubt they do that for him.

A nice thought... but Fantasy Island indeed...

Well the idea was one of the two, Hutton or Tanev. Edler can't be moved NTC, unless.....But I have faith that the D and goalie prospects will be okay, the smaller goalie equipment will mean more need for offense.

The Nucks could even float a goalie through the three way trade to Edmonton, the kid they just signed maybe? For an extra pick or even bigger deal.
