Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has signed goaltender Michael Garteig to a one-year entry-level contract.

Garteig, 24, recently completed his senior season with Quinnipiac University, leading the Bobcats to the ECAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA National Championship. In 43 games played this season, Garteig posted a record of 32-4-7, along with a career-best .924 save percentage and 1.91 goals against average. His 43 games played and 32 wins led the NCAA while his eight shutouts and .826 win percentage ranked him second in the nation. The 6-1, 190-pound goaltender has appeared in 124 NCAA games over four seasons for Quinnipiac University, where he has compiled a record of 78-25-16, a 1.98 goals against average, and a .917 save percentage.

Prior to his collegiate career, the Prince George, British Columbia, native spent parts of four seasons in the BCHL, split between the Penticton Vees and Powell River Kings. He earned back-to-back BCHL Top Goaltender Awards in 2011 with Powell River and in 2012 with Penticton en route to an RBC Cup National Junior A Championship.

"With Canucks top prospect Thatcher Demko agreeing to a contract last week, the question is where does Garteig fit?

Since the Canucks have Richard Bachman under contract next season, it’s a fair bet that Garteig will start in the season in the ECHL as the starter and move up progressively. This is ideal for Garteig, as he will be able to see a lot of pucks early, adapt to the pro game and then hopefully begin his ascension up the professional ranks.

Given that Garteig will turn 25 in the fall, he will need adapt quickly if he hopes to carve out an NHL career. But given his ability to show continued improvement with more playing time and a foundation of skills, he is worth the gamble of a contract for the Canucks"

Interesting... well, I suppose that's our fifth behind Demko and Bachman/Cannata next season. Either that or they move Bachman if they feel like they don't need a vet in Utica (but that seems unwise). And then after Demko graduates to the NHL you still have a guy like Garteig holding down the fort in Utica if he performs well enough to get re-signed. Not bad.

Starter and back up, or maybe even 60/40 game split.

Benning is a smart guy. Demko has never played more than 39 games while Garteig 34 or 35. This rotation eases them both into professional hockey.

Good job JB.
