Canucks need to be in the draft lottery for at least 2 more years to be competitive

The cupboard is thin. There is great divide. If you look at the Utica roster, who do you think is the player most likely to have some significant effect when called up next year? Gaunce, Pedan, who else? I see no one. possibly, Subban, Cassell was an enourmous disappointment. We basically have no one. Then, there are the up an coming kids from juniors like Demko, Boeser, Stecher, Neill, Olson, Brisebois, Zukenov, etc. but they are a few more years away. Theese prospects mentioned will make up the core of Utica, in 2-3 years who will then eventiually, slowly become the Canucks core and support cast.

But if you look closer, they are not enough vs the strong teams of the other teams. Even in our division, the 2 Alberta loser teams have better prospects.

So, in my opinion, aside from this year, we need to be in the Top 6 of the next 2 draft years. This will ensure that the probability of success in our rebuild.

There's an additional bonus to this, we get more draft parties, we get to play more with the draft pick generator thing.

I'm so excited right now for tonight's show and I want it to be the same in the next 2 years. After that, we go to the show and none of the 1st round-happy to be here BS. We're going all the way on the 4th year.

The cupboard is thin ummmmm

Virtanen

Boeser

Demko

Stetcher

Gaudette

Olson

Cassels

Subban

Gaunce

Pedan

All have a reasonable chance of playing in the NHL or have a long career. Definitely not thin, I added McCann and Virtanen because they might be in Utica next year

I just don't understand why people are saying that Cassels is a "disappointment" or a "bust". He was a late 3rd round pick that greatly exceeded expectations in his draft+1 and draft+2 years. It's honestly an achievement that he made it to pro hockey at all. Also, one bad rookie year in the ahl, and you're writing him off?

Good god, I hope so. Edmonton hasn't been in the playoffs for a decade, it would be absolutely abhorrent if they didn't have better prospects than us. Calgary not as much, but still similar.

We had a great run, and we need to recharge. I'll be happy if we make the playoffs next year, and I'll be happy if we get a good pick too. Just please don't end up 17th in the league.

Yes they do. I'd say 3 or 4 more. Not all top 5 picks tourn out to be top 6 forwards or top 4 Dmen.

We have a long ways to go. We still need to a lot of players from top tier talent to depth forwards and Dmen. We are just in the beginning stages.

Look at the latest re build thats looks like it's going to be successful. Florida. They have 4 top 3 picks in the past 5 years.

Ekblad 1st

Barkov 2nd

Matheson 23rd

Huberdeau 3rd

Gudbranson 3rd

Kulikov 14th

What's more important is drafting and developing what the Canucks have already and into the future- not winning more draft lotteries.

Brent Sutter said it best: "it seems like teams that are re-building are still re-building".  What you see on paper means jack squat unless you can properly develop and draft smart.  EDM is a perfect example of the opposite.  They should have been a much more competitive team years ago.

Even with the NHLers on that list, I'm still not sold.

I've been saying since the payoffs vs McDavid that Cassels would take years of AHL and hopefully one day he can be an AHL player. People on CDC just over valued Cassels, like they do with most Canucks prospects.

People thought Cassel would win the Selke in the NHL cus he shut down McDavid. They wouldn't even calm down when I posted vids of the team defense McDavid faced, not just Cassel.

The most disappointing part is that the Canucks lack tradable assets that can help bring in picks. Teams like the Sabres had assets that they could move to draft more often in the first 2 rounds. Most of our guys either had NTCs or were too past their prime to get any decent return.
