Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar might need to find some extra room in his trophy case.

Kopitar was named a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, awarded "to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability."

The other finalists are Aleksander Barkov of the Florida Panthers and Loui Eriksson of the Boston Bruins.

The winner will be announced during the 2016 NHL Awards on June 22 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Kopitar also is a finalist for the Selke Trophy, awarded to the League's top defensive forward.

In 81 games this season, Kopitar led the Kings with 74 points and was second in the League with a plus-34 rating. He had 16 penalty minutes while averaging 20:52 of ice time per game.

Kopitar finished third in Lady Byng voting last season. The last Kings player to win the Lady Byng was Wayne Gretzky in 1994.

Barkov had NHL career-bests this season in goals (28), assists (31) and points (59), and had eight penalty minutes in 66 games. He is the first Panthers player to be a Lady Byng finalist since defenseman Brian Campbell won the award in 2012.

Eriksson is a Lady Byng finalist for the second time; he was third in voting in 2011. This season he had 30 goals and 63 points, and had 12 penalty minutes in 82 games. The last Bruins player to win the Lady Byng was Rick Middleton in 1982.

I know it's the PHWA that votes for this award, but for me, I believe that it should be the referees of the league. They're the ones who see what the average person doesn't see and hear what nobody else hears. I know people might then accuse them of being corrupt and playing favourites, but lets be real... people do that already.

I wonder why Hank was never even thought of for the Byng in his entire career.

He has been considered a bit:

  • 2007-08 (55th)
  • 2008-09 (35th)
  • 2009-10 (7th)
  • 2010-11 (11th)
  • 2011-12 (21st)
  • 2012-13 (24th)
  • 2014-15 (14th)

He's just never been a finalist, but he has been regularly considered.

Out of curiosity, where do you find the voting data for awards outside of the 3 finalists?

I use Hockey-Reference. Great source. When you search up any player it will tell you results of award voting for that specific player on the far right column.

This goes to the player with the most perseverance / class / gentlemanly conduct, and who has overcome adversity, isn't it? Or is adversity even a criteria? I also don't think ex-NHLers should be considered for it, even if Dupuis went through health problems and it sucks.

When's the last time someone in their mid-40s has led a team in the NHL in scoring? I know Howe played forever, but did he lead his team at that age? It'd be cool if Jagr won it.

You are combining the Bill Masterton with the Lady Byng. The Bill Masterton is for those who've overcome adversity, showing a dedication to the sport of hockey. The Lady Byng is for those with class and gentlemanly conduct.

To this point, Beliveau led his team in scoring in 1970-71 at the age of 39 and Howe did it 1969-70 at the age of 41.
