Ok, I think I'm over it.

So, I think I am over the events that unfolded at this weekends draft lottery.

After all, it's a game of chance, it is what it is, and we need to roll with the punches - sure it is disappointing, but what hasn't been disappointing over the last handful of seasons (and our entire history...).

We missed out on the Finns and Matthews just like we missed out on winning the draft lottery every other year, it's just that this time we had better chances, let's collectively move on, drop the excuses, and look forward to what happens next.

It is likely we will draft one of Dubois, Tkachuk, Joulevi, Nylander, Brown, etc etc -- I am fine with any of these players, the first two I could see pushing for spots out of their first camp. I have seen Dubois and Tkachuk (more ready than Dubois) play more than a handful of times and they are prototypical western conference players, maybe not game-breakers all on their own, but team guys who will help build a winning culture and competitive group -- WE NEED THIS!

The birds are beginning to tweet Hamhuis contract discussions, looks like we have a good shot at bringing him back -- and Benning also let us in on the fact that he is looking to land a big UFA - all in a mornings work for Bro and the Pratt man (smh these two...) - This plus the addition of Stecher into the system, a possible Drake Cagguila signing, and whatever else comes about over the next few months sets us up nicely for next year.

I am not expecting playoffs next year, I am sure a lot of people aren't, so be prepared for the team to make the playoffs - they reeeeally like not having expectations.

Let's try and remain positive, just because we didn't win big in the lotto doesn't mean we lost, we are still on track and trending in the right direction.

/rant

Thanks,

Jib

If we get Dubois and Okposo I will consider this offseason a win.

we still need a potential 1D, but yah that would go a long way to making the team a contender

I'm hoping Benning still has a lot of credibility with Buffalo and he can manage to trade for the #8 pick and grab up Sergachev too.

At least the Oilers didn't get it again. I live in Edmonton and it would have been unbearable listening to the guys on my hockey team chirp about it for the next year.

I'm happy Calgary didn't get #1, that would have been torture

I'm over it.  Before the start of the season my dream was a top 5 pick despite benning's talk of playoffs.  Tank nation accomplished that so was a success!  It wasn't a real good success as that would have been a top 3 pick, but was still a good success.  I bet a lot of you would have loved a top 5 pick at the start of the year. We got a top 5 pick in a year we were trying to retool and make the playoffs!  Imagine if we were boston with the 14th pick? Now that would have been a wasted year!

It does sting we didn't get a top 3 pick, but we should still be happy with a top 5 pick because it wasn't looking like we were even going to get that until our march nose dive.  I remember during the torts year, we were like 10th and then a miracle final 2 weeks with canucks losing and a bunch of other teams pulling off miracle wins vaulted us to 6th overall and everyone was real happy.  Well this year we have 5th!  The pain of losing out on the top 3 shouldn't overshadow the fact that 5th is still a great pick too.  I'll be happy with the pick as long as benning doesn't go off the board or trades down.  I really want dubois or tkachuk!

The problem was all the buzz around a system that is almost guaranteed to disappoint at 3rd pick, statistically 2/3 of the time you drop. Tkachuk, Dubois, Chycrun or Juolevi. If we knew last year one of these 4 would be a Canuck we'd all be freaking out with joy.

Like Jim Benning said - not gonna lie - it was disappointing to  see Vancouver pick at 5.  On the flip side this is pretty much what everyone expected  for the last month.  No point crying over spilled milk - it's done - we move forward.

The interview on TSN  pretty much indicates that Dan Hammhuis will be re signed (hopefully not long term) and the talk of signing or searching for a  big UFA or a couple UFA depending on money  makes for an interesting scenario moving forward.  The draft and summer camp are going to be interesting.  We need a No 1 centre  and we need defence.   I am hoping that Jim and Trevor will be able to negotiate some excellent deals over the next couple months - and hopefully put a smile on the faces of canuck fans.

And on that note - who gets signed this week?

Niemelainen will be available in the 2nd round.  Big solid decently skilled player.  Might not have 1d in him, but could be a solid addition nonetheless.

Caggiula, Hamhuis, Etem, and Baertschi.

Vey, Bartkowski, and Weber will not be re-signed by the Canucks. At all.

Interesting - he might still be available at at the start of round 2. Doesn't sound like a scoring type but very mobile and size to spare
