nucklehead
Quote Fort McMurray residents are fleeing their homes as flames from a wildfire enter the city, engulfing neighbourhoods across the lower townsite. As the evening progressed, the evacuation order expanded and officials urged people to stay calm as they packed the roads leaving the city. http://globalnews.ca/news/2677885/mayor-issues-warnings-as-fire-situation-in-fort-mcmurray-intensifies/ Quote UPDATE: All of Fort McMurray was put on mandatory evacuation alert 6:20 p.m. Tuesday UPDATE: Evacuees are asked to go to the Horizon North BlackSands Lodge if they are south of the Suncor overpass and to the Suncor Firebag Site if they are north of the Suncor overpass. UPDATE: Premier said this is one of the largest fire-related evacuations in Alberta's history. As of 6:20 p.m., all of Fort McMurray is under a mandatory evacuation order including MacDonald Island. The mandatory evacuation order means that about 70,000 people who live in Fort McMurray are being told to flee the city. Scott Long of Alberta Emergency Management said the flames have burned a number of structures, but he couldn’t say how many. One hotel was seen engulfed in flames. Residents reported hearing explosions coming from gas stations as they tried to leave. The hospital in in Fort McMurray – the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre – was being evacuated at 5:20 p.m. As of 5 p.m. Noralta Lodge’s village location was full. If residents are south of the Suncor overpass, they can proceed to the Horizon North BlackSands Lodge. If they are north of the Suncor overpass, they should head to the Firebag Site, northeast of Fort McMurray, which is open to evacuees.

Then it just ran wild this afternoon because of the winds. They're expecting worse conditions tomorrow. Could be Slave Lake all over again. Green Building
Pretty wild. Anyone who's ever been near any large type of fire can imagine the incredible heat around those fleeing vehicles. Just a brutal stroke of bad luck with those winds.
Lillooet_Hillbilly
I first aided on a bunch of fires, let me tell you it can run fast and furious when that wind goes, fire fighters lose so much equipment because when they say pull out you run
Warhippy
Having shot fire zones for BC Forestry and C Dart I can attest to just how ridiculous this is. By all reports the entire city has been evacuated and that the winds are pushing this fire towards the town on 2 fronts. Slave Lake was bad as was Barrier/McClure, but this...with all of the camps around it as well as the holding tanks stands to be not only a financial but potentially an environmental disaster as well. Simply put, get out, get out safe and ensure yours are taken care of

The refineries are a ways to the north and I don't think are under threat atm. I wonder about the pipelines, though. Not sure if they're in the burn area or not. Fateless
Got a lot of friends who work/live in Fort Mac. Lot of devastation being felt as they watch their homes go up in flames. A lot of the "camp jobs" that are located outside of Fort Mac are actually taking in and sheltering people, I've got a buddy who is currently sharing his hotel room with two Fort Mac locals who were brought in earlier today. Happy to see people coming together to help one another out, but sad to see such devastation. Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims.
otherwise
I was listening to cbc radio from edmonton and it sounds really bad. there is no more fuel in Ft. Mac and a few other places outside. They are now worring about making sure people have enough gas to get away. It really seems like all the camp infrastructure is really helping the hospital has evacuated north and with be flying all critical patients south from the camps. Sounds like some neighbourhoods have just all burned.
