prix57
http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/british-columbia/reena-virk-kelly-ellard-day-parole-1.3564981 Quote Day parole has been denied for Kelly Ellard, who was convicted in the beating and drowning of 14-year-old Reena Virk near a Victoria bridge nearly two decades ago. The hearing, before a two-person panel, took place at the Fraser Valley Institution in Abbotsford, B.C., where Ellard is serving a life sentence. Parole board regional spokesman Patrick Storey said the board was not convinced the 33-year-old was ready to be released into the community yet. "She still seems to be minimizing many aspects of the offence," Storey said. "We want to see more evidence." 'If it wasn't for her, Reena might not have died' Ellard was 15 in November 1997, when she smashed Virk's head into a tree and held her under water until she stopped moving. B.C. teen killer Kelly Ellard seeks day parole 18 years after Reena Virk murder Parole board members were tasked with trying to determine if Ellard is at risk of reoffending or poses a threat to the community. The parole board hearing marks the first time Ellard has admitted to having a role in Virk's death. Storey said Ellard told the board that "if it wasn't for her, Reena might not have died that night." Although Ellard has taken steps to taking more responsibility for the crime than she has in the past, Storey said, the parole board was not convinced the positive changes she has made behind bars will be lasting. He said many of the breakthroughs in her behaviour have only happened in the last year. "People who do terrible things sometimes approach the truth reluctantly," he said. "Maybe that's what we saw today: she's approaching the truth, but at least in the parole board's eyes, didn't get close enough to it." Ellard has previously waived her right to a full parole hearing four times while serving her life sentence. Teens beat Reena Virk The murder happened late in the evening after Virk joined a group of teens gathered outside a local school to drink and smoke pot. The girls assaulted Virk, who then crossed a bridge, pleading to be left alone. Reena Virk's body was found eight days after she was swarmed and beaten by a group of teenagers on Nov. 14, 1997. (CBC) Successive trials heard that Ellard and another teen, Warren Glowatski, followed Virk across the bridge. Glowatski, who was also found guilty of second-degree murder in Virk's death, was granted day parole in 2007 and full parole in 2010. Ellard was convicted in 2005 after her third trial. She was found guilty during her first trial in 2000, but the verdict was overturned and a new trial ordered when the B.C. Court of Appeal determined the Crown had improperly cross-examined her. No healing for parents Virk's parents did not attend the hearing. Her grandfather, Mukand Pallan, said they left town to avoid the media attention. Ellard had run into other trouble since Virk's death. Her bail was revoked in 2004 while she was living in a halfway house awaiting trial. She was charged with assault causing bodily harm of an older woman in a New Westminster park. The charges were stayed after she was found guilty in the Virk trial. Heretic
So....why was Glowatski granted full parole?

Because he took responsibility and showed remorse for what he did, something Kelly Ellard never did until this year evidently.
Aladeen
I will add that it was found out that Glowatski is Metis (something that he found out after being incarcerated). Metis Elders were included in the Parole hearings and I believe that the parole was something that was supported by the Virks.
nuckin_futz
This case has always hit very close to home for me. The murder happened 2 minutes from where I lived at the time. I even attended the same junior high school that many of the participants went to. The viciousness of the murder can never be overstated. Virk was lured out under the pretense of attending a gathering under the Craigflower bridge. She was then swarmed by 7 people. Was kicked in the head numerous times, punched repeatedly and had a cigarette put out on her forehead. This initial swarming/attack was all premeditated. Bloodied and dazed she made her way across the Craigflower bridge only to be followed by Ellard and Glowatski. Who decided they weren't done with her. They dragged her under the bridge kicked her in the head repeatedly. The article above doesn't fully explain what they did. They didn't just knock her out and drown her. They made a conscious decision to drown her but didn't want her to swim away to safety. So they rammed her face into a massive tree knocking her out. Then broker her neck, back and both arms. Ellard then dragged her into the water and held her down until she was motionless. Like Aladeen said, Glowatski owned up to what he did and took responsibility, Ellard hasn't. She still a dangerous person and should spend the rest of her days in a cage.
-Vintage Canuck-
This is the best news I heard all week. Good, she should never be let out.
Canuck_Fan_52
This is tragic, my condolences. Since she was a minor when the crime was committed, what is the maximum penalty she can face in Canada? I assume it's life in prison?

DJSkingz
She deserves to rot in jail. Over 15 years later and she still can't admit to her role in what she did. Sickening.

Nucker 67
The crime is just sickening, disturbing. It's very expensive to put a criminal in prison for life, and we pay for them to have a bed and food etc. There is no rehab for people like this, they're wired wrong and should be extinguished. The threat of Capital Punishment would maybe deter sickos from doing this kind of stuff in the first place. Eye for an eye.
Cerridwen
Quote Convicted teen killer Kelly Ellard denied day parole Good. They should keep her locked up until every available legal reason to keep her has been exhausted. It won't take long after she's out to be right back there again. She has no remorse, lacks empathy and takes no responsibility for her actions in the murder of Reena Virk (at least the parole board does not feel she demonstrated enough of it), for her behavior (assault, bodily harm and beating of a 58 year old woman over a cell phone) while out on bail awaiting her second trial and her behavior while locked up. Unfortunately, some other innocent person will pay the price for Ellard's freedom and trip back to prison. There's something so very, very wrong with that premise. You have no further to look than south of the 49th for proof. Nor is it cheaper to execute someone than put them in jail for life.

Rocky Balboa
She should never be allowed to join society. Would anyone feel comfortable sitting on the same bus with her or having her as a coworker? I remember watching this cow on TV and having a smirk on her face as the media surrounded her. She must have thought she was a Hollywood star. Lock her in a dungeon and throw away the keys.
