Trading away the 2017 pick is a horrible idea. Hopefully we can contend, but it's equally likely we are picking top 5 again. Imagine if we lost the first overall next year, the fan base would burn Vancouver to the ground. Drouin has looked great since coming back, but you don't risk everything to get him.

So to clarify.  By speeding up, you want to send off our only RHD prospect grown in house capable of starting the year in the NHL and Utica without issue.  As well as our best potential C/LW capable of top 6 play in McCaan plus a mid pick for a gamble of Sergachev,

Then you want to trade our most valuable D man + a 1st next year, in a year we're more likely picking top 10 again, sorry guaranteed to be picking top 10 again with that blue line; an unprotected first no less for a smaller forward wh while attractively skilled has been the source of more than a few problems to his gm and coaches

Hmmmm

I don't think Tampa does it anymore.........we should have went after Drouin when we was sent down..........is anyone question his character now?

I don't think we would get him for that...........Tampa knows how many injuries we had last year, they know we could buy a decent UFA or 2..........Druoin has showed major talent IMO

I know it is a lot, but a 30 year injury prone Dman and a 2017-16 to 20 OA.............that is the other possibility Tampa would be facing.

Like I asked...anyone questioning Druoin's character or talent?

Stecher replaces Subban. Subban is a huge piece for MTL in this trade

Toronto Maple Leafs 2006-2013

"Hey, let's speed up this rebuild."

- Alex Steen traded for nothing

- Tuukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft

- Sign Eric Lindros

- Sign Jason Blake

- Sign Jeff Finger

- Sign Mike Komisarek

- Buyout Darcy Tucker and have cap on books for years

- Buyout Grabovski

- Trade picks (Seguin and Hamilton) for Kessel

- Sign David Clarkson

Not complete list, but how did all that work out for them?

How about the Canucks try and build a winner the way all successful teams have built winners, by NOT trying to speed it up.

No he's not. Montreal had 5 picks in the draft before Vancouver ultimately chose Subban. If the wanted him at all they would have taken him.

I dont see Montreal having any interest in this deal.

Absolutely disagree that we will be picking top 5 again.  Our young guys will be another year more experienced.  We will have our injuries repaired.  We are likely to dip into the UFA market which will replace Vrbata's horrible year with the kind of points we saw from him the year prior.  If we don't make the playoffs (and I expect we will) I'm calling it now - there is zero chance we're going to be at the bottom of the league like we were this season.

As for the proposals, I'd be apprehensive of these offers.  Subban is a bit undersized, but has shown some promise and is fiercely competitive.  Jury is still out on McCann, but many believe he still has the potential to be a 1st line player. Don't forget that he was rushed into the NHL last season.  His faceoffs suck, but his hockey IQ is excellent and I still think he shows promise.  Also keep in mind that if we were indeed to draft a defenseman that we wouldn't see him up with our team for at least 1-2 years.

So I'm about 50/50 on your proposal to Montreal.  Highish risk, highish reward.

As for the offer to Tampa, it leaves our blueline even more suspect for this coming season.  (Unless we were to sign a UFA like Yandle.)  We'd also be taking a bit of a risk with Drouin.  His skills are excellent, but his falling out with Tampa makes me question his character.  And while he has done well in the playoffs, his regular season stats so far don't prove he is a 1st line player.  And while I'm convinced we will do better next season, who knows - we might suck, and I'd sooner get a high overall draft pick and keep Edler than to take that risk.  Additionally, this proposal requires Edler to waive; something I believe he's refused to do in the past.
